|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Year_Audit | YYYY - The year of the Fishery Audit. | ||||
| AUDIT_INDEX_STOCK | Yes/No - Indicates if this stock is an Oceana Canada index stock and part of the annual comparison in the Fishery Audit. The Fishery Audit index stock list (194 stocks) was created for the 2017 Fishery Audit and is based on marine fish and invertebrate stocks included in Oceana Canada’s inaugural 2016 report (Baum and Fuller 2016), combined with those included in the first public release of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Sustainability Survey for Fisheries (SSF; 2015 results) and any stocks with newly available information from government reports that year. To make annual comparisons, we use the index stock list but continue to add stocks from any new marine fish or invertebrate stocks appearing in recently published CSAS reports, fiscal year workplan commitments or in the departments Sustainability Survey for Fisheries each year. New stocks do not have information for each year of the Fishery Audit, and thus are not included in annual comparisons and are indicated as not being index stocks. | ||||
| STOCK_DATASET_ORIGIN | Text string - Indicates if the stock was originally included in the Fishery Audit dataset because it was included in the Baum and Fuller (2016) report, the 2015 results of the Sustainability Survey for Fisheries, a merger of both of these stock lists (i.e., the stock was in both but with different definitions in each), or from an annual Fishery Audit update process. All Pacific salmon stocks were newly added as a supplementary dataset in 2022. | ||||
| Stock_in_DFO_SSF | Text string - Indicates if the stock also appears in the results of the most recent Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Sustainability Survey for Fisheries (SSF), and if so how the stock definitions match up between it and the Oceana Canada Fishery Audit dataset. Please note that the SSF has had different stocks included, and some different definitions as to which stocks are included, since its initial release of 2015 results in October of 2016. This field compares the stock definitions here to the most recent SSF stock list available at the time of annual updating (e.g., 2020 SSF results were most recent available for 2022 Fishery Audit). Please note the SSF results are usually released in November of the year following the survey fishing year they cover (i.e., 2018 results were released in November of 2019). Thus, for the Fishery Audit update, the most recent results are usually for the fishing season two years prior. This field was new in 2020 (and in 2020, compared to the SSF 2018 results). | ||||
| Stock_in_Regs_CG2_Batch_1 | Text string - Indicates if the stock has been included in the draft Fish Stock Provisions regulations as outlined in Canada Gazzette 2 in April of 2022. | ||||

| BC_Area | Text string - Five major areas identified by available IFMPs. | ||||
| Conservation_Unit | Text string - 463 Units identified in The Salmon Escapement Database (NuSEDS) according to the definition, "A group of wild Pacific salmon sufficiently isolated from other groups that, if extirpated, is very unlikely to recolonize naturally within an acceptable timeframe, such as a human lifetime or a specified number of salmon generations". Note Under the hybrid models of CUs there are only three types of CUs characterized by the status of their constitutent populations: spawning successfully in the wild in Canada; not spawning in Canada but present elsewhere; and extirpated. A fourth type, the "bin" has been retained. They will be used to keep track of fish that are counted but not associated with any other CU. There are several procedural codes that can be prefixed or suffixed to the CU types. These could be used to indicate, for clarity, at what stage the CU is at in whatever approval process is eventually agreed upon: VREQ[] : Indicates that there is some doubt about the nature of the CU and valididation is required. The most common use of the prefix is for sockeye CUs on the central and north coasts that were identified by presumed suitability rather than by actual verified records of persistent presence. The second most common use is for CUs that likely were valid but it is unknown if they persist. Again these are mostly sockeye CUs. PROPOSED[]: A CU that has been proposed for inclusion in the CU list (sometimes as a new extant CU but also as an exinct CU). | ||||
| CU_ID | Text string - Unique identification code for each stock to facilitate data manipulation from The Salmon Escapement Database (NuSEDS) | ||||
| Management_Unit | Text string - 62 Stock Management Units (groups of CUs) identified for implementation of the Fish Stocks Provisions of the revised Fisheries Act. Identified in the Pacific Salmon Explorer based on a provisional list provided by DFO to the Pacific Salmon Foundation | ||||

| COSEWIC_Status | Text string - Information on the biological status of Conservation Units, completed by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), where available. COSEWIC status is listed as Extinct, Extirpated, Endangered, Threatened, Special Concern, Not at Risk, or Data Deficient | ||||

| CU_Integrated_Status_Comments | Text string - CUs characterized as Current/Extirpated/Bin, according to categories detailed in Conservation_Unit field. VREQ[] : Indicates that there is some doubt about the nature of the CU and valididation is required. The most common use of the prefix is for sockeye CUs on the central and north coasts that were identified by presumed suitability rather than by actual verified records of persistent presence. The second most common use is for CUs that likely were valid but it is unknown if they persist. Again these are mostly sockeye CUs. | ||||

| LRP | Yes/No/NA - Indicates if the CU has an available Lower Benchmark. According to Canada’s Wild Salmon Policy, Conservation Units (CUs) should be assessed against specific reference points, or benchmarks, to assess their biological status. For each CU, a higher and a lower benchmark are to be defined so as to delimit ‘green’, ‘amber’, and ‘red’ status zones. A spawner abundance indicator was used to assess biological status based on spawner-recruitment or percentile benchmarks. NA=Conservation Unit is not listed in corresponding IFMP or IFMP unvailable to search for LRPs | ||||

They are linked to the harvest strategy and fishery management measures. | ||||
