| Howard, Henry | Songes and Sonnettes | London: Richard Tottel | 1557 | ESTC S93062 | Known as Tottel's Miscellany, this collection of poems had a lasting influence on how poetry moved into print. The first edition contains a different selection of poems than later editions of the poem (the 1557 second edition has been imaged by the Ransom Center; see the "imaged" sheet) and isn't even on EEBO.
| Sidney, Philip | Astrophel and Stella | London: Thomas Newman | 1591 | ESTC S102409 | Sidney's sonnets helped create the literary fashion of sonnet sequences. This edition was published after his death and was suppressed at his family's request; an authorized edition (ESTC S110965) followed later that year, without some of the prefaces and sonnets of the first. The latter edition is also not available (the links to HathiTrust from the ESTC record are to images of facimiles in one case, and to images of blanks in the other).
| Jocelin, Elizabeth | The Mothers legacie | London: William Hanna | 1624 | ESTC S106777 | A popular exemplar of the genre of mother's advice books, and a particularly somber one, given that she did indeed die giving birth to her child. There are five extant editions between 1624 and 1635, none of which are in OA digitizations.
| Marrant, John | The Narrative of the Lord’s Most Wonderful Dealings with John Marrant, A Black | London: printed for the author | 1785? (4th edition) | ESTC N41949 | Marrant's captivity narrative was first told as his ordination sermon in 1785 and was originally published in a prose version by William Aldridge soon thereafter and in a verse narrative by Samuel Whitchurch. The 4th edition of the Narrative was revised by Marrant and published according to his wishes. There are some not great images of the Aldridge versions, but no OA imaging of the authorized edition.
| Marrant, John | A Sermon Preached on the 24th June 1789 | Boston: Thomas and John Fleet | 1789 | ESTC W3272 | Two sermons preached by John Marrant; the first works by a black author printed in the American colonies. The sermons were reprinted in the 1790 volume of his journal (ESTC N505767) which is available in a low-res black & white digitized microfilm.
| Bunyan, John | Pilgrims Progress | London: Nathaniel Ponder | 1678 (pt 1); 1684 (pt 2) | ESTC R27237; ESTC R13811 | It's hard to overstate the impact of this work, which stayed in print with new editions frequently appearing throughout the handpress period and beyond and spreading throughout Europe and into colonizing efforts. The earliest facsimile of a complete edition online is of the 1738 edition (perhaps the 25th ed) through NYPL. | the first American printing is in progress via BPL
| A true relation of those sad and lamentable accidents, which happened in and about the parish church of Withycombe in the Dartmoores, in Devonshire, on Sunday the 21. of October last, 1638. | London: George Miller for R. Harford | 1638 | ESTC S119945, ESTC S121345 | It is an excellent example of Puritan providential literature, popular among certain sections of society at the time. It is also a relatively short and concise piece of which we only have one surviving print run, though it did in one form or another see multiple reprints. Evidence for its value in understanding popular puritan belief is also to be found it is one of the few texts that we know Nehemiah Wallington to have read.
| Stapleton, Theobold | Catechismus, seu doctrina Christiana Latino-Hibernica = Catechismus. Adhon, an Teagase Criostuʹi, iar na fhoilluʹi á Ladin & á Ngaoilaig | Brussels: Huybrecht Anthoon Velpius | 1639 | ESTC S126250 | Stapleton's catechism is the first Catholic book in Irish to be printed in Roman rather than Gaelic type. Stapleton made an effort to simplify spelling in the Irish language to encourage literacy. Stapleton, a priest of Cashel diocese in Ireland, was killed during the sack of Cashel Cathedral by the Earl of Inchiquin in Sept. 1647, as part of the Irish Confederate Wars or Eleven Years' War (1641-1653).
| Leabhuir na Seintiomna ar na ttarruing go Gaidhlig tre chúram & dhúthrás an Doctúir Uilliam Bedel | London: [sn] | 1685 | ESTC R23375 | First edition of the Old Testament in Irish Gaelic. It is also known as Bedell's Bible and William Bedell, Bishop of Kilmore, was a key figure in leading the Reformation in Ireland. He believed the Irish Catholics would understand the text better if in Gaelic rather than the usual practice of reading through Latin. The text was revised by Andrew Sall, Narcissus Marsh, and other scholars. The outbreak of the 1641 rebellion (as part of the Irish Confederates / Eleven Years' War) and subsequent death of Bedell in 1642 delayed publication by forty years. The project was revived by Robert Boyle, who commissioned the London printer Robert Everingham, using the Moxon type, to print Bedell's Old Testament in 1685. Everingham had already produced O'Donnell's New Testament in 1681.
