7 | 11:30 | 12:30 | 1:30 | 2:30 | Briana Ingermann | Holistic Planetarium: Infusing Astronomy with Social and Emotional Learning. | Fiske Planetarium has developed four “Holistic Planetarium” field trip programs that merge astronomy content and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL). These programs encourage conversation between students and educators to bridge the scientific process to daily life. Informed directly by teachers, NGSS standards, and SEL competencies identified by Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), we developed these programs in 2020 and have since engaged over 1200 students both virtually and in-person. These programs offered a robust way to engage 4th-9th grade students during the pandemic and even allowed us to expand our reach to rural districts across the state of Colorado. The planetarium program scripts and supporting educator resources will be made freely available, and we hope they can inspire ideas for approaching science learning more holistically.

We will also describe Fall 2021 releases of "Climate Change in Our Back Yard" and "Cosmic Mashups: Gravity, Galaxies, and Supermassive Black Holes" and our Spring 2022 release of "Forward! To the Moon" featuring the NASA Artemis mission to the Moon. Finally, Fiske will be premiering a new, live musical performance titled "Voyagers" created in collaboration with Matheatre and available to full dome theaters worldwide. In the midst of COVID, Fiske Planetarium installed three state-of-the-art "Live Capture" systems to integrate standalone digital devices and software into our dome presentations. This installation provided some anticipated upgrades in functionality, along with some unexpected benefits and limitations. We will discuss the addition of these live-input capabilities into the DigitalSky2 software and some ambitions for the future.

Beginning in September, it will be open before and after public and school shows, and will have many affordable and educational items for sale, as well as the usual t-shirts, caps and coffee mugs. Planetarium Director Jon U. Bell will share his experiences in setting up and operating this new gift shop, including the kinds of merchandise being offered. He is also seeking out tips and recommendations from those in our profession who have been operating gift shops, and is looking forward to hearing those stories!
