Battle of Smolensk - The Logistics Dimension
|Wargames can be enhanced using a map-based logistics simulations where game pieces from the wargame are also created in the logistics simulation, then dragged and dropped to place them on a map just as they are on the wargame playing board. This simulation quickly does the calculations and shows the logistics network or supply chains required to support any move in the wargame. Players are not bogged down with complex calculations, and are empowered to explore strategies and tactics in more realistic detail. They can easily run different logistics simulations to refine the strategic and tactical ideas that emerge in the wargame. We'll use a wargame depicting the 1941 Battle of Smolensk to illustrate this concept for adding the logistics dimension to any wargame.||11 Aug 1600|

Developed by the Battlefront team, it is currently being converted from a commercial video game to a full professional tool in cooperation with DSTL, but is already being used in classified wargames. It models morale, visibility, cover, fatigue, comms and a range of other features that make it one of the most realistic simulations of modern warfare. Due to its commercial gaming background it also comes with an approachable UI making it easy for the novice user to pick up and play immediately. Developed by the Warfaresims team, it is in use across the US DOD, UK and a host of other countries and contractors for a range of purposes from future force, COA, training and analysis. As it covers air, maritime, land, space and cyber it is also being used as part of DARPA's Gamebreaker program as a training ground for AI. |Playthrough||COVID 19 Dilemma||From COVID-19 Matrix games hosted in the past months both in the Netherlands and in Canada, we derived a number of dilemma's that will challenge our national level policy decision makers in the months to come. As those policy makers don't have the time nor inclination to play out a full Matrix game, we have condensed those dilemma's within a so called dilemma game format. This format challenges policy makers with a series of complex decisions within a timeframe of about 45 minutes. |
The game presents a series of complex policy dilemma's, for each dilemma the player has about 5 advisers that will all give their own perspective on the issue at hand. Even with that advice, the fog-of-crisis remains, the information will be incomplete and ambiguous and the decision to be made will have economic, health-related and societal consequences, no matter which option is selected.

Developed by the On Target Simulations team, it is near the end of year 2 of a 5-year development plan as part of the ATHENA project, which has added a modern USMC OOB and red forces. It is also in use and development for DSTL to add a British OOB and additional data logging options to help with detailed analysis and a host of other features to support defense industry wargaming.
