A:There are a lot of employers out there, you need to set some parameters on location, size, mission and industry. What companies do you love? Who have you always admired? Know that woman at the bus stop in heels? Where does she work? Draw from your life experiences, interest and passions to identify realistic potential employers.

Q:How Do I Narrow Down Job Families and Roles?

A:This might seem obvious, but it's very important to be aware of the nuances of job families and titles so that your'e seeking the appropriate job level (e.g. Project Coordinator vs. Project Manager). If you're looking to jump from the commercial sector to non-profit, or from one industry to another, do the titles and roles change?

Q:Who Are My Professional Contacts?

A:Anyone you know in those organizations, or anyone with your desired role in other organizations. The idea is to leverage your existing contacts in a smart way and build out the "holes" in your professional network. You can do this by attending industry-specific events, using LinkedIn's search function for "6 degrees of separation" and generally improve your elevator pitch so that you know what to say when someone asks, "how can I help with your search?"
