I’m Michael, I’m Brenden.

We’re gonna explore the deeper meanings of these films; the plots and their twists; the characters and their choices; and how we can relate them to the gospel of salvation, and ultimately our Christian walk.

BLTFor so much sorrow...comedy?

Lonergan with Terry Gross on NPR's Fresh Air:

The really funny comedies to me are always the ones that are played the straightest or given the most emotional content. And when people start making faces and setting things up and commenting and winking at you, I don't find that to be very funny. A really good comedy, I think, is played as if it was real and it's the circumstances that make it amusing. And I think that the - the inverse or the reverse is true for drama.

PARENTS GUIDE

Sex and Nudity:

A woman is passed out on the couch in her home, likely from drinking, nude from the waist down. The camera angle shows her bare stomach and legs, but hides the pubic region. Her husband covers her while his brother takes her son upstairs so he doesn't see.

A teenage boy has two girlfriends. One he has sex with offscreen at his house. He discusses with the man looking after him first, who suggests he use a condom.

The other girlfriend he attempts multiple times to have sex with, but is always interrupted until the end. In one scene, they lay on her bed as he puts his hand in her pants. In another, we see the two in underwear.

PROFANITY:

Over 125 profanities. The f word is used 81 times.

Alcohol and Drugs:

The main character is an alcoholic and there are dialogue about him being very drunk in the past.

Marijuana and cocaine are mentioned.

BLTLee Chandler Needs His Family to Carry His Burdens

After everything is said and done, Lee has now realized that he is too overwhelmed by his own grief to be able to be Patrick's guardian.
-- Dreaming of his girls sitting with him on the couch
-- Sauce pot burns on the stove and smokes the whole house

READ: Ecclesiastes 7:1-4
-- Clarity and wisdom in grief

Knowing his own shortcomings, Lee reaches out to someone who can help Patrick: Georgie
-- Patrick would be able to stay in his school
-- Lee can get back to work...he's a handyman, after all

Patrick, however, doesn't want Lee to leave.

PLAY SFX #1: I Can't Beat It

Our final hope for Lee? Although he can't beat it himself, he can with his family.
Ecclesiastes 7:1-4 NLT

1 A good reputation is more valuable than costly perfume.
And the day you die is better than the day you are born.
2 Better to spend your time at funerals than at parties.
After all, everyone dies—
so the living should take this to heart.
3 Sorrow is better than laughter,
for sadness has a refining influence on us.
4 A wise person thinks a lot about death,
while a fool thinks only about having a good time.
2:06:00 - 2:07:03
Are they gonna be my guardians? | They're gonna adopt you. Anyway, that's just how I set it up. You don't have to. It's up to you. | So you're just gonna disappear? | No, no. I set it up this way so you could stay here. And they're really glad to have you. | I know I know, I mean, they're great, but...why can't you stay? | Oh Patty. I can't beat it. I can't beat it. I'm sorry.

mhFeed my sheep; it’ll be good for you.

This film opens and closes with fishing.

SOUND BITE 1: This can’t be right. I can’t be his guardian. I can’t! | Naturally I thought Joe had discussed all this with you. | No, he didn’t. No. He can’t live with me. I live in one room.| Joe has provided for his upkeep | I can’t commute, I work in Boston. | I think the idea was for you to relocate.

SOUND BITE 2: Relocate where, here?! | It was my impression that you spent a lot of time here over the years. | I was just the back up. I came up here to look after Patty, yeah, If Joe was in the hospital after my father couldn’t do it. But we… it was supposed to be Donnie. I’m just the back up.

SOUND BITE 3: How much they paying’ you? | Minimum wage plus the room. | Alright. Let’s go get some furniture. | I got furniture. | No you don’t. This doesn’t count as furniture. This is not a room. Let’s go get some furniture. | Get off my back! | Patty. Come on, let’s go. Let’s go.

SOUND BITE 4: Listen. If you could take one guy to an island with you, and you knew you’d be safe because he’s the best man - he’s gonna figure out how to survive; he’s gonna make the world a good place on the island; he’s gonna keep you happy… this is the best man for the job, no matter what. If it was between me and your father, who would you take?

IMDb Trivia

Damon and Affleck continuously discussed how deeply connected Lee remains to Joe, even though he isolates himself from the rest of the world. His brother's last act is an attempt to have Lee reengage with the world.

Feed my sheep.
Matthew 26:73-75 NLT
A little later some of the other bystanders came over to Peter and said, “You must be one of them; we can tell by your Galilean accent.”
Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying—I don’t know the man!” And immediately the rooster crowed.
Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he went away, weeping bitterly.

Matthew 26:33 NASB
But Peter said to Him, “Even though all may fall away because of You, I will never fall away.

John 13:37 NASB
Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You right now? I will lay down my life for You.”

John 21:1-17 NLT

PS Philip Comment on SAVING MR. BANKS: A Spoonful of Grace | FCC 140Hey guys, great episode on a great film!

I won't be able to re-watch MR. BANKS until this weekend, but I think the strongest message is the relentless grace and forgiving attitude the character of Walt Disney exemplified. You guys spoke well of it, and it reminds me a bit of the Hound of Heaven, pursuing us with mercy and love despite ourselves.

That Kindle book sounds like a great idea, you guys should go for it, and since Brenden already has reviews written up on so many Tom Hanks films, much of the work is done.

Love the show guys! #muhweeladgimli
