Add Roster
Add your roster on the "Students" sheet. The sheet allows up to 110 students at the moment, though honestly I'd recommend capping it at 30ish and using multiple copies if you have more. It can get pretty slow with a large number. . Add Last Name, First Name, and a unique student ID number/string (I use strings like A3, representing the third student in my A period class). E-mail are optional, but if you add them you can use a script to e-mail them the URLS for their websites automatically.Contacts (links go to blogs)David Griswold - wrote these direction, the scripts, and modified the spreadsheetJohn Orr - came up with the idea of gamifying a standards gradebook, wrote v1 of sheetKyle Pearce - wrote many of the spreadsheet features, evangelized its use

Add goals
Add your learning goals. I go one quarter at a time, but you could conceivably do more - the sheet can handle up to 64 goals. Learning goals begin at cell G8 of the master sheet and go horizontally. They are already numbered - don't change the numbers, just add descriptions in the cell below the number. You can also weight the value of each goal in the student average. By default, each weight is 10, so if you want a double-weight goal change it to 20, and so forth.Scripts

Add Resources
Add sample problems, handouts, solutions, or whatever else you want to be associated with the standard in the corresponding lines below the standard. To add a link, use the command =hyperlink("URL","text"). If you don't like the names provided for these options (on the first column of the spreadsheet) feel free to change them: the student spreadsheet will automatically match your change (up to the Task for L3/L4 row, explained below). These scripts expect your last tab to be called "Student Template" so if you've changed the name of your template document or moved it, they won't work.

Add Assessments
Add links to secondary assessments in the three "Task" rows. The proper task will be automatically provided to the student - if they are below level 3 they will be offered the "L3/L4" task, if at L3 they will be offered the "L3" task, and if they have achieved level 4 but not a mastery badge, they will be offered the "Try for Mastery" task.

Copy Tabs
Use the "Student Tab Manipulation" menu item OR the button on the right to make copies of the Student Template tab for each student. (If the menu doesn't appear, you may need to authorize - click the button and it will ask you to do so). Don't worry, you can still add standards and links later - they fill automatically.

Publish Tabs
On "Badges, Titles, and Scales" set up your grading scale. if you want to enter 1-4 (with possible "DNS" for did not submit or "R" for retry) then you can leave it at the default. If you prefer to enter numbers out of 100 and set up your own star scale, go for it. The students will be able to see an average of all of their current scores for the unit by default, so some teachers may prefer to enter grades in their "real" grading scale if their school does not use SBG.Note: because of limitations with this system, a clever student may be able to figure out how to access other students' pages. If that is a dealbreaker, you will need to find another system - the links they get can easily be jiggered to give access to a page that lets them see everybody's sheet. I have ideas on how to change this, but they are more trouble than they are worth at this point I think.

Entering Marks and Notes
You may notice that URLs for each student showed up on the Master sheet. Those are the URLs you will send to students to access their page. But they don't work yet! You need to click File->Publish to the Web. At this point, you have two options: you can simply publish the whole document, which could give a clever student access to see (never edit) your master sheet, for example. But that's one click. OR, you can click the arrow next to "Published Content and Settings", then click the little dropdown box, UNSELECT "Entire Document" then manually click all student tabs. Whatever your choice, click "Publish." Once that is done, the URLs in the spreadsheet should work - test one, then distribute them to your students.Subject Line for e-mail to students:Your personal webpage for math class standards!

Provide notes and links for all students
Each standard has two columns. The first column is for the grade/mark. This is based on your scale. You can also enter "dns" for "Did Not Submit". Students will see the grade, as well as a translation of how many stars the mark is worth, up to a max of four. The second column shows teacher feedback - any note entered there will show up for the student next to the appropriate standard. The third column is for declaring mastery - enter anything in that column and the student will receive a mastery badge. Delete the value in the cell to take the badge away.Message above URL to students:Please click the link below to access your learning goal tracker for this unit. I suggest bookmarking it!

Customize badges and titles
Use the top of the Scores and Goals sheet to add announcements that will show up for all students at the top of their pages, as well as links to general resources.

Enter Midterm and Final marks and see Averages
You can customize the badges your students earn for standards, the names of their "titles", how many badges are needed for each title, and how many stars different grades are worth on the "Badges & Titles" tab.
12
You can use the Score Summary page to see weighted student average marks. This page would be easy to customize and add your own formulas for converting into your gradebook scale of choice.

Good Luck! Please be sure to let us know how it goes as we all venture into this new territory together.
