17 | 1. Preparing your application: Create a template for all CVs and CLs to help streamline the application process. That way, you only need to change key words and 1-2 paragraphs for each firm. Ideally, you should create a template for each type of role you are applying for, e.g., one for IB, ER, Consulting, etc. Your CVs and CLs will go through many drafts so make sure you start early and have friends read over it. | |||||||||||||||
18 | 2. Pscyhometric tests: Don't leave these to the last miniute. Start early and practice, practice, practice. You can use sites, such as JobTestPrep to practice. Alternatively, you can also use your lower priority applications as practice for your top 10 firms. Remember, you must complete the test in the time given for your best shot at obtaining an interview. Good luck! | |||||||||||||||
19 | 3. HireVues: As more and more firms are using these as a replacement for either a psychometric or first round interview, it's important to nail these interviews. Try to anticipate the types of situtational, behavioural and technical questions they may ask you. Many websites detail example questions. You can also reach out to others for advise on the types of questions you may encounter. Remember to have good lighting and a tidy background. Some firms allow you to retake your answers while others to not so make sure you prepare before starting the process. In addition, use the preparation time allotted to write down your ideas to ensure your answer is concise and structured. | |||||||||||||||
20 | 4. Preparing for Interviews: Similar to HireVues you can often find example interview questions online. Many questions will be around your experience, your motivations, and commercial awareness. These first few rounds are focused on detemining if you fit the firm culture, are genuinely passionate about the role, and your soft and technical skills. If you don't know how to answer a question, try your best and send a follow-up email afterwards with your new answer. Remember to thank them for their time and ask for feedback! It shows your willingness to take constructive feedback and learn for the next time. Additionally, always have a long and short stock pitch ready, even for IB roles. Many interviews are moving away from brain teaser questions, but it is still important to prepare those as well. Remember this is your time to think and show what you bring to the table: What gives you an edge? What makes you unique? And how can you add value to the team? | |||||||||||||||
21 | 5. Case Studies and Technicals: Understand key valuation methods (DCF, P&L, Comps) and metrics relavent for the role. These case study interviews is not only to demonstrate your knowledge but to understand how you think and what unique perspective you have on an M&A deal, IPO, stock pick, or consulting case study. You have limited time (often 30 minutes) to prepare so it's important to demonstrate your ability to filter through noise and synthesize the information available to you. Practice as much as you can prior to the interview! | |||||||||||||||
22 | 6. Preparing for Assesment Centres: The AC will often require a case study (see above) as well as 2-4 final round interviews with senior members of the team. These interviews tend to be less technical and focus on your motivations, how you think, what interests you, and what you bring to the team. Just be yourself and remember to ask question to the interviewer as well. | |||||||||||||||
23 | 7. Getting Rejections: Applications is a volumes game. The more applications sent, the more likely you will get through the different stages, and the more practice you get. It is, of couse, dissappointing receiving rejection after rejection, but remember to keep your head high. Getting through to an interview requires chance and a whole lot of luck. 24 | 8. Track Your Progress: Create an excel sheet to track where you are for each application. As you get feedback from previous interviews, make note of it and try to improve for the next one. You might see majority rejections, but it only takes one yes at the end of the day! | |||||||||||||||
