Have you visited a school library in the past three years?
If so, was the school library staffed by a certified school librarian?
How important is it to you that all Michigan students have access to effective school libraries staffed by certified school librarians?
Do you believe that all K-12 schools should have a certified school librarian to guide the reading interests and abilities of students and teach students research and other information and technology skills?
How important is it to you that all Michigan public schools provide their students with a comprehensive education in digital citizenship, and information and media literacy?
How likely would you be to support the legislative goals of HB 4663, HB 4664, and HB 4665?
If re-introduced next session would you be interested in sponsoring this type of legislation?
Do you believe that students need school library services and related educational resources in order to be prepared for career and college?
Intellectual freedom is the right of every person to seek and receive information about any topic from multiple points of view. It includes the right to hold, receive, and share ideas and information. All people have the right to intellectual freedom, including children and teenagers. How concerned are you about the increase in book challenges and bans that aim to limit the freedom to read for Michigan residents?
Students who see themselves in books gain a greater sense of ownership and accountability to their classrooms, school, community and the wider world. Children have the right to read texts that mirror their experiences and languages, provide windows into the lives of others, and open doors into our diverse world. How important is it for students to have access to inclusive books and resources?
Parents may guide their children’s media consumption based on what they feel comfortable with, but they are responsible only for their own children and may not dictate what other children and adult community members can access. How important do you feel it is to protect access to information?

I believe all libraries are important. I was a board member of the Harper Woods Public Library from 2012 - 2015. In graduate school, my graduate assistantship was with New York University Film and Video Library (since closed), and later worked for four years for the NYU Bobst Library. I am vested AFT-AFLCIO. I would work to support libraries and academic freedom.

Reading is fundamental for success in everything we do. It is very important that we support our libraries and access to them both in our schools and in our communities. I would want to view the whole package in order to ensure completeness before I would support indefinitely. I do support the premise.

I don't know a lot about certification, what it requires to be certified, and not the area of education where I have expertise. Therefore, I need to know more about this problem. I would consider co-sponsoring, but I doubt that I would be primary sponsor until I get more information.

Potentially, I am concerned with a schools ability to higher a certified librarian. School's are short and having difficulties filling teacher and bus driver positions. Mandating a certified librarian will be just as difficult if not more so. I'm concerned these mandates would be unfillable.

I believe and know for a fact the presence of a Librarian is linked to improved student performance. Librarians are teachers, inspire motivation of reading and teachers of technology. My fondest childhood memories are the time I spent in my elementary, middle school and high school library.I believe my love of research and reading comes from the librarians at those schools teaching me how to expand my thinking and imagination. I still visit my public library very often.

The basics of research and understanding how to get accurate information are crucial. Especially in a media environment like today, where there is far more content than any one person can consume. It makes me incredibly sad to see Michigan ranked so low in the Perspectives report, and we should work together to improve those scores for the sake of students across the state.
