What are the most common minor misbehaviors you encounter daily-weekly in your classroom/teaching? (Select all that apply or complete Other option)
Have you encountered any of these major misbehaviors bi-weekly or monthly in your classroom/teaching in the past year? (Select all that apply or complete Other option)
I have a clear idea on what behaviors need to be handled by the teacher and what behaviors need to be handled by the office.
I believe a flowchart could help new and experienced teachers identify what behaviors need to be handled by the teacher and what behaviors need to be handled by the office.
(Below is an example flowchart from a local School District)
I explicitly and regularly teach behavioral expectations to my students. (Rank how often you practice this teaching.)
I believe more literature needs to be developed or shared regarding behavioral expectations and how teachers should standardize, display, and teach those expectations.
I support the creation of a standardized set of behavioral expectations for students.
If you support standardized behavioral expectations, please suggest a memorable acronym or motto (e.g., SOUTH: Strive, Organize, Understand, Teamwork, Honor):
Please suggest a memorable acronym or motto or suggestion to improve the current behavior teaching model. (e.g., SOUTH: Strive, Organize, Understand, Teamwork, Honor):
How do you typically address misbehavior in your classroom?
How do you typically communicate with students about their behavior?
How do you typically communicate with parents/guardians about student misbehavior?
How do you know a student is acting against acceptable policies or practices?
What supports are you aware of and regularly contact for misbehaving students?
How effective do you feel the available supports are in correcting student misbehavior?
What unique classroom environment approaches do you use to address specific behavioral infractions? (Please specify the type of infraction and your method):
How often do you:
Call home about behavior issues?
How often do you:
Administer detention?
How often do you:
Restrict cell phone use?
How often do you:
Monitor hall passes?
When it comes to our hallway monitoring standard, ...
Would you support exploring new ways to monitor the hallways, such as using an e-hallpass/smartpass system?
How do you positively encourage good behavior in your classroom? (Select all that apply)
Are you familiar with the Positive Behavior Incentive System that exists at Central Elementary and Rommelt Middle School?
I support the use of positive behavior incentive systems (e.g., rewards, recognition)?
Would you utilize resources that Blast IU 17 has to offer regarding positive behavior incentive systems (e.g., rewards, recognition)?
How do you track and reflect on your classroom behavior data?
How often do you reteach correct behavior to students?
How often do you practice restorative responses to address behavior issues between those who caused harm and those who have been harmed?
How confident are you that there are sufficient proactive resources available to help reteach misbehavior at our school?
Could you commit to sending 5 positive communication cards a month to students?
Please provide any additional ideas or suggestions for proactive approaches to improve student behavior at South Williamsport High School:

I don't know if we need another acronym in education, but I do think simple and repetitive expectations across our school are wise. I like Williamsport's 4 Bs- Be present. Be safe. Be respectful. Be responsible. They are shared via announcements daily and implemented across the school via their schoolwide behavior plan.

I can support rewarding students for going above and beyond in a positive way (helping someone who is disabled, picking up things that someone dropped in the hallway, holding a door for someone carrying a lot of stuff... etc) but to reward someone for simply showing up and not getting in trouble? That's the bare minimum of what is acceptable.

I build relationships with students who have behavioral issues (and/or have positive conversations with them -- not only conversations about their poor choices). It is important to give students a fresh start and respect them even if they have had behavioral issues in the past.

I believe in being positive and in recognizing success, but I think that it is more important to teach students correct behaviors and to stick with it until they learn it (like we were taught in the APL training). We have to decide what we value most. I would like us to keep in mind that our goal is to prepare students to enter the world as adults who are independent, responsible, and engaged in the community. This does not happen magically at graduation. Our behavior plan should reflect this and allow students more freedoms as they near graduation (beyond senior incentive: being allowed to print out materials from their iPad, using spaces like the library without supervision, having their cell phones and using them appropriately, just as examples). A very specific plan is needed to teach them the expectations how to use these freedoms (per APL or Effective Teaching). Any schoolwide plan must have training and procedures in place for the teachers as well, that occurs regularly with regular check-ins. Without this, the handbook should just say that students follow the classroom policy of the individual teacher, because that is what we do anyway. Consistency requires more than just a one time reminder. There needs to be communication and clarity.
