Thanks to friendly MBL staff we could get our hands on three beautiful specimens. Obviously they saw a couple along Vineyard Sound-facing beaches and could collect a couple in the harbor. The specimens they gave to us were quite large. The one in the picture has a float of approximately 20cm in length and was the smallest of the three.

While surfing at 14 street Santa Cruz I was nailed by something I never saw. Initially I felt nothing but after rinsing off in fresh water later that night I notice my neck starting to blister up. Its been a week and my neck is still on fire. From my research I'm sure I either rubbed against a Chrysaora fuscescens (Sea Nettle) or the baby ones known sometimes as sea lice.

Over the course of two days,I observed over 20 jellyfish washed up on shore and in the marsh. The area is on a tidal creek- Pungoteague Creek that flows into the Chesapeake Bay. The jellyfish were on the sand beach and up in the marsh. Not sure how long they had been there, went out first on April 10 and then on April 11. Saw about the same number on both days, though realize I could have been seeing the same ones.

I saw at least 50 washed up at Lauderdale by the Sea, FL in a half mile walk just north of the pier at Commercial Blvd. This was one of the largest, as shot next to a child's sand toy that was about 5" in diameter. I washed the sand off a bit so the bright red gonads (I think - I am not a scientist, but looked up info on the web) would be visible. Others varied in size from around 5 inches and up. They were in great condition at this point. I picked this up to look at it underneath - it was smooth. I didn't see any tentacles at the edges. There was no sting.

Box Jelly33.46-117.691
Found box jelly in dana point harbor while fishing. Seen chasing a school of tiny fish, very shallow. Nobody here has seen box jellyfish before, even the other fisherman. Lifeguard told me that box jellyfish only live in tropical waters so it can't be a box.

Found in the pristine waters of the red sea, many of these found floating a few metres from the beach in the coral reefs that house various angelfish, trigger fish and almost every type of red sea coral. They all seemed to be floating on the top of the water, and no tentacles are hanging from the bottom... This one was obviously found washed up up the beach, much to the fright of many tourists.

I usually see many Phacellophora camtschatica (Fried Egg Jellfish) and Aurelia Jellyfish (Moon Jellyfish) in the local Marina but this is only the second time I seen the Lion's Mane in the harbor. It was maybe a foot and half across with a fried egg jellyfish in its tentacles. Deep reddish purple flowered top, beautiful.
