2/7/2017 10:28:56Southern Illinois: Land and Water Panel Discussion4/19/20171:00:00 PMDept. of Geography & Environmental Resources; Environmental Studies Minor
Southern Illinois is a unique ecological region – with the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers just north of us, and south of us, the merging of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. Also to our south, the Cache River watershed is internationally recognized due to its 1,000 year old trees, migratory birds and wondrous tupelo-cypress swamps. Traditionally, land and water in our region have been managed to produce agricultural goods and fossil fuels, and to transport them down the river. More recently, recreation and other activities are gaining prominence. We will discuss the history of land use and water management in Southern Illinois, address current concerns, and suggest possible paths forward.
