The scholarship is intended to encourage and support real-world experiences that complement formal academic requirements. Dept of Community Studies, UCSCAndrea Steiner Prize for Excellence in Health EquityWinter, SpringVariesWhen long-time UCSC lecturer Andrea Steiner retired in 2021, Community Studies friends and family established a prize in her name to celebrate students who continue her legacy of excellence in health equity education and achievement. An award will be given to 1 undergraduate or graduate student for a field project that will make a significant contribution to the solution of an environmental problem. Scholarship Award is made annually to one or more undergraduate or graduate students majoring in Environmental Studies. Division of Social Sciences, UCSCKeeley Coastal Scholars Award ApplicationWinter$1000-4000The Keeley Coastal Scholars Award provides students at UC Santa Cruz the financial support they need to engage in summer research and policy work related to coastal sustainability. Students can be doing work in any area of terrestrial, aquatic, or marine systems along the coast. This award is open to students in both the Social Sciences and Physical & Biological Sciences. These funds can be used by students for any expenses incurred during the summer months. The purpose of this financial support is, to the extent possible, to replace the need for the awardee to seek temporary employment over the summer months by providing financial support so the student is able to allocate time and focus on research and policy work connected to Coastal Sustainability instead.Application

Division of Social SciencesThe Rick Hooper ScholarshipWinterVariesThe Rick Hooper Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Richard M. "Rick" Hooper, who died at age 40 in the August 19, 2003, terrorist bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad. The Rick Hooper Scholarship, administered through the Division of Social Sciences, is based on academic merit and financial need. Preference is given to undergraduate students in any UC Santa Cruz department who have a demonstrated interest in or are pursuing studies in one or more of the areas in which Rick Hooper focused his life's work.Application

Division of Social Sciences, UCSCBenjamin Quaye Memorial ScholarshipSpringVariesThe Benjamin Quaye Memorial Endowment for Social Justice award is an annual undergraduate scholarship for a student with significant financial need who is pursuing educational and career goals in social justice, with a strong preference for a student who is the first in his/her family to attend college. Students who, like Benjamin, volunteer to help the under-served, such as foster youth, people with disabilities, and the homeless are ideal recipients of this award. Students are nominated by their departments and do not need to put forward an application.

The Gabriel Zimmerman Scholarship is awarded based on a meritorious, ongoing, and demonstrated commitment to public service combined with academic excellence.Self-nomination to your major department (form available in spring)

Division of Social Sciences, UCSCDeans' and Chancellor's AwardsWinter$100-$500Dean's Awards are granted to fifty of the most excellent undergraduate research theses or projects (ten from each academic division) completed at UCSC during the academic year. Each Dean's award project will receive $100 for outstanding achievement in their division. Up to fifteen Chancellor’s Awards are given to the top theses or projects from each division's Deans' Awardees. Each Chancellor's Award project will recieve a $500 award. Winners of the Chancellor's awards will be announced by the beginning of May 2023. The Steck Award is given to the most outstanding research project chosen from the fifteen Chancellor’s Awardees. This student (or team) will receive (or share) an award of $2,000 and the winner's mentor will receive an award of $1,000. In addition, the winning research project will be bound and copies given to the student(s), the research supervisor, the UC Santa Cruz Library, and the Steck Family whose generous contributions have made this award possible.Application (displayed in Winter)

Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program, UCSCDoris Duke Conservation ScholarshipYearly$4600 stipend yearlyThe Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program at UCSC, founded in 2016 focuses on to growing a diverse community of emerging leaders to strengthen conservation. Each year we select 20 students from around the U.S. and its territories to participate in our two-year conservation leadership program. Scholars enjoy two fully-funded summers in an immersive mentorship program focused on Conservation Research, Leadership, Communication, and Professional Skills, and join a network of 500+ conservation leaders.Application (displayed in Fall)

Institute for Social Transformation, UCSCTransforming Futures: Summer Internship ScholarshipSpring$7,500The Institute for Social Transformation is excited to offer an internship scholarship program called Transforming Futures. The goal of the program is to open up opportunities and remove financial barriers for first-generation and low-income students at UC Santa Cruz so they can participate in career-advancing non-credit summer internships. National Oceanic and Atmospheric AdministrationErnest F. Hollings Undergraduate ScholarshipFall Up to $9500 per yearThe Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance for two years of full-time study and a 10-week, full-time paid internship at a NOAA facility during the summer. The internship between the first and second years of the award provides the scholars with hands-on, practical experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities. Awards also include travel funds to attend a mandatory NOAA Scholarship Program orientation and the annual Science & Education Symposium, scientific conferences where students present their research, and a housing subsidy for scholars who do not reside at home during the summer internship.Application

National ScholarshipBarry M. Goldwater ScholarshipNov-JanUp to $7500 (4 or 2 semesters)The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was established by Congress in 1986 to serve as a living memorial to honor the lifetime work of Senator Barry Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years in the U.S. Senate. UCSC's Blum CenterBlum Scholar Grant AwardSpringUp to $2000The UCSC Blum Scholars award program enables undergraduate and graduate students to complete a community-based research project either domestically or abroad that addresses poverty, social enterprise, or participatory governance. This year we will expand our awarding to include support for up to three research projects related to improving UCSC students’ access to basic needs (e.g., food security, housing).
