Schoolyard Forest Lessons and Activities - Standards Alignment
2
Introduction
3
This matrix accompanies the lessons and activities linked in the Educator Resources for Schoolyard Forests. It is intended for educators and administrators looking to connect their schoolyard forest to standards in Science, Mathematics, and English Language Arts. A schoolyard forest provides an engaging learning environment that can help students learn and apply content standards in various subjects, and we hope this matrix provides clarity and support around these learning possibilities.

The matrix consists of several spreadsheets on the following tabs and is organized by grade band (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12) and by subject (Science, Mathematics, and ELA).

Please note that:

- For Science, lessons and activities have been aligned with the Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCIs) of the Next Generation Science Standards. These lessons also address various science and engineering practices and crosscutting concepts but are not organized by these in the tables. Furthermore, lessons that primarily support practices rather than a specific DCI are not included in these tables.

- For Mathematics, lessons and activities have been aligned with the domains of the Common Core Standards for Mathematics. These lessons also address various mathematical practices but are not organized by these practices in the tables. Furthermore, lessons only addressing practices are not featured in these tables.

- For English Language Arts, lessons and activities have been aligned with the four primary strands of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language in the Common Core Standards.
