Monitoring Sea Ice Evolution with Ultrawideband Microwave Radiometry in the MoSAIC Campaign
johnson.1374@osu.edu
Research data will include
the measurements of ultra-wideband radiometer acquired as part of the MOSAiC campaign, as
well as pre-campaign calibration experiments. The datasets will be recorded as time and location
tagged “Medium rate” binary files that record spectrograms of the observed thermal emissions at
1 msec and 512 spectral channels in each of four instrument primary channels, as well as the
kurtosis of these measurements both in the time and frequency domains. As described in Table 1
of the proposal, these products represent a data rate of ~ 300 MB/hour of operation, or a total of ~
2.6 TB acquired over the 1 year campaign. These datasets will subsequently be processed into
“level 1” (data after blanking of pulsed interference at 100 msec resolution) and “level 2”
(calibrated data at 100 msec time resolution and the removal of frequency domain sources) that
will be available as HDF5 formatted datasets for public use.

Arctic water isotope cycle processes and patterns in the Central Arctic during an International Arctic Drift Expedition (MOSAiC)
jmwelker@alaska.edu
We are working towards a very structured format that will involve archiving our water vapor isotope data from the array of sites across the Arctic that are part of my/our network. 1) Raw observed absorption spectra from isotopic analyzers, allowing
fundamental transparency for long term archives; 2) calibrated time series data on water vapor and
isotope ratios; 3) calibration datasets and calibration performance statistics; 3) precipitation isotope

ratio data and accompanying error statistics; 5) ancillary meteorological data; 6) a series of quick-
look images to assist users browsing the data archive; 7) gridded water vapor transport fields output

from atmospheric transport model, with matching visualization; and 8) educational packages forming
part of our Broader Impacts plan. Each file will be accompanied by comprehensive documentation,
including information on data primary origin, analysis methods, and metadata. Model output will be
stored in standard NetCDF form (using the CF convention).

We were unable to complete our work during the MOSAiC expedition. We participated in Leg 1 but that was all. We are preparing to collect data from Utqiagvik this Spring. Our MOSAiC is not over so we will be extending the project for another year and will have better answers to all your questions later this summer after we see what we are able to collect in Barrow. I would expect data to be submitted late this year or early in 2022.

Parameterizing sub-grid Arctic snow-on-sea-ice processes in Earth System Models using MOSAiC field observations and realistic-resolution process models
glen.liston@colostate.edu
The model-output datasets mentioned in our proposal are still about 2 years away from being created; in fact, the models are still under development. The reality is that I won’t know for another 2 years whether we have any model outputs worth archiving, or how large the resulting datasets will be.

In the meantime, my project is responsible for archiving all the MagnaProbe snow depth transect data that was collected near the ship during the MOSAiC field campaign, by my project and other international researchers and projects. These data will be first archived in the PANGAEA repository and, as part of that, those data will be directly linked to the other PANGAEA transect datasets (e.g., GEM-2, SMP, SWE) that are intimately related to the MagnaProbe transect data (i.e., all of these datasets need to be somehow connected to each other; if they are independent and don’t point to each other, they are worthless to most projects).

The complete MagnaProbe dataset is small. I don’t have an exact size yet, but it will be something like 100 MB, or less.

Our cleanup, documentation, and submission of the MagnaProbe data to PANGAEA should be complete in the next several weeks. When that is done, you should be able to create your duplicate of those data or whatever you require for the NSF archive.
