Adonit JotFinePoint Stylushttp://adonit.net/jot/pro/iPad, Tablet, iPhone, AndroidThis isn't an "app" but it was recommended during the session. The finepoint stylist would be helpful if using an iPad app for creating tutorials that require a finer line such as mathematical formulas or scientific calculations. It also functions better than a nib-type stylus for notetaking apps when handwriting is preferred over the on-screen keyboard.$29.99

PaperTeaching/Research/Creativity/Productivityhttp://itunes.apple.com/us/app/paper-by-fiftythree/id506003812http://www.fiftythree.com/paperiPad/iOS, soon for AndroidMinimalist visual sketchpad. Couple with a good stylus. Originally designed to launch quickly and be ready to capture visual ideas and sketches. Offers tools with the look of pencil, marker, watercolor brush and an "inverted" fountain pen. I say inverted because the pen interprets increased speed of gesture as emphasis and widens the stroke. A real fountain pen would behave differently, narrowing the stroke. Offers more variety of expressive marks than Penultimate (see above). This one celebrates drawing and sketching as annotation. Paper introduces a novel "rewind" gesture for "undo", but also has an eraser as part of its tool kit. Paper plays well with social media, offering integration with Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook. It also integrates well with Dropbox and the native Photostream and eMail apps. It is possible to share individual pages with social media, and whole notebooks as PDFs with Dropbox and eMail. Now partnering with Moleskine to present the opportunity to Print On Demand books of drawings.Rafael Fajardofreemium, (free to download and try with the Fountain Pen brush, in-app one-time purchases for more "brushes" 1.99/Brush, and for more color palettes)

PenultimateTeaching/Research/Creativity/Productivityhttps://itunes.apple.com/us/app/penultimate/id354098826?mt=8http://evernote.com/penultimate/guide/ios/iPad/iOSHandwritten notebook. Couple with a good stylus. Generates shareable, muti-page, PDFs. Offers a minimal set of options, which allows me to not get bogged down in the intricacies of the software. Three pen widths, six possible colors, three "paper" styles, an eraser, cut & paste function, the ability to make multiple virtual notebooks, and to move pages between and among them, are all the functionality I need. When device is coupled with a projector, can project notebooks live, so can facilitate meetings, and behave as a whiteboard that is then sharable. Has some of the smoothest, most responsive, pen-like feel of all the notebooks I have tried. Evernote integration includes handwriting recognition, which renders your hand-written notes searchable on your desktop (I have to stress-test this feature, your mileage may vary). Offers "wrist" detection so that one can rest ones wrist on the surface of the device without confusing it as a multi-touch gesture. Plays well with Good Reader (see above), Dropbox, and with Evernote, which now owns Penultimate. Integrates with native Calendar and Photostream apps.Rafael FajardoFreemium, (free to download and try, in-app one-time purchases for specialty "papers" 0.99, in-app premium subscriptions for enhanced Evernote integration 4.00/Month.

PlainTextTeaching/Research/Creativity/Productivityhttps://itunes.apple.com/us/app/plaintext-dropbox-text-editing/id391254385?mt=8http://www.hogbaysoftware.com/products/plaintextiOSUPDATE Jan 2014: This app was sold to another developer, and is now sold as PlainText2. The handoff was severely fumbled, and I no longer feel confident in recommending this app. ### This app was a minimalist Text Editor that integrates seamlessly with Dropbox, so that I can edit a live synchronized version of my document across my devices. I have not tried to do collaborative writing with this app. I've thought of this one as the place to capture ideas that are best expressed as typewritten text, when words and sentences need to be drafted quickly. This app does not have the capacity for italics, nor bold, nor any other visual formatting capabilites. Creates native .TXT files that live in the Dropbox folder. Dropbox may be a co-dependency for this app. Update on 2013 11 08: PlainText has just released version 2.0, quickly followed by version 2.1. Version 2.0 has significant changes to how it behaves when synchronizing with DropBox, as well as user interface changes from Version 1.X. These changes were alarming in that it caused a set of cascading re-synchronization with DropBox across all of my devices. Version 2.1 restores our capability to opt for a synchronous relationship with only one App specific folder within DropBox, rather than the entire DropBox folder. It also fixes some bugs, It also introduces new in-App purchases which extend the functionality. I have not opted for these, and so cannot comment further.Rafael Fajardofreemium, with ads. one-time in-app purchase removes the ads 0.99. Update, the price for removing ads has gone up with version 2.0 to $2.99. This is promised to be a one-time cost for the lifetime of the App.
