Please find the provided Alvin ISD Course Guide as a resource intended to help Alvin ISD students and their families make informed decisions regarding coursework selections throughout high school. This guide has been designed to help identify coursework pathways that will position them to transition to post-secondary education or directly into a career already possessing many of the skills that will help them achieve success. We also encourage you to reach out to your counselor who can help you make informed decisions.

Students are required to graduate on the Foundation High School Program with an Endorsement. Students can earn an endorsement in one of five areas including: Business and Industry, Public Services, Arts and Humanities, Multidisciplinary, or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

PLANNING YOUR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM

Each high school year, every student is one step closer to the future. With each decision, the student may either preserve options or restrict future possibilities. The following information can be used to help parents and students plan for high school and beyond.

High school courses chosen during a student's freshman and sophomore years are among the most important academic decisions a student will make in high school. While these decisions may not determine what career the student will pursue or which college the student will attend, they may limit certain colleges and careers from the range of choices.

The Endorsements and Pathways Guide provided within this document is a tool that students and parents should use to effectively plan for the upcoming year and the remaining years of high school.

The four years of high school should be planned to preserve a student's options. Too many math and science courses cannot harm a student’s college or career prospects, but too little will likely impact career possibilities in which the student may later become interested. For example, a student who decides to enter engineering or attend a very selective college, during the junior or senior year, may discover that the college or career selection required four years of math, science and/or a foreign language.

ALVIN ISD COURSE REGISTRATION

🔹Junior High and High School counselors will provide 8th grade parents with information regarding graduation requirements and the process of selecting classes for their student’s 9th-grade year of high school.

🔹Students/parents will have an opportunity to schedule an individual 4-year plan meeting with a HS Counselor during the 9th grade school year.

🔹High School Counselors will meet with 9th and 10th grade students in classroom settings to review requirements for graduation and assist with course selection.

🔹Counselors will meet with each junior (11th grade) student through an individual academic conference.

🔹Students should discuss course choices with parents, coaches, and current teachers before completing the course selection form.

🔹Teachers are encouraged to provide consultation and advisement regarding course selections for accelerated and advanced coursework, special programs, and CTE programs of study.

🔹In the late spring, students will be provided a verification sheet to confirm their course selections. Students must notify their counselor of any requested changes prior to June 1st.

What is a school master schedule? Junior high and high school master schedules are detailed plans that specficy how, when, and where the courses of the school will be provided. Master schedules ensure efficient use of staff and building resources and provide equitable access to courses students are required to take and interested in taking to complete their schooling.

Student course selections determine how the school master schedule is built, how faculty is hired and how room assignments are made. Your course selections are your commitments to the courses.

After the start of school, schedule changes will only be considered based on the following circumstances:

*The student is a senior not yet scheduled in a class needed for graduation.
*The student has already earned credit for a course that they are currently scheduled.
*The student does not meet the prerequisite requirement for the course.
*The student was dismissed from a program in which approval must be granted.

Note: Student schedule changes may occur at the discretion of the campus if at anytime the student is not on track to graduate in a timely manner. This includes the removal of off periods/office aid periods for 12th grade students in the last semester of high school.
