Introduction to your SIP/ School Profile
(appoximately 100 words)
Founded in 1962, John S Clark Elementary School has a long standing commitment for engaging and empowering all students to be successful in an ever-changing global society. The school is named after a former Waukegan Public Schools (WPS) District #60 Superintendent, Mr. John S Clark. The school serves approximately 233 students in K - 5th grades from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Presently, over 12 world cultures and 14 world languages represent our student and family demographics. The school campus is located in Waukegan, Illinois (Lake County) and is adjacent to Lyons Woods, part of the Lake County Forest Preserves. The school offers dual language classes (Spanish/English) and hosts the District's only Transitional Program of Instruction (TPI) for newcomer and refugee students. Sixty-three % students are identified as Limited English Proficient (LEP) or English Learners (ELs). The student demographics include 69.7 % Hispanic/Latino; 11.3% Asian; 8.4% Black or African-American; 6.3% White; 2.9% multiracial; 0.8% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander; 0.4% American Indian/Alaska Native. Seventy-three percent of students qualify for reduced-priced meals. Clark Elementary School holds the WPS60 District's only "Exemplary" designation by the Illinois School Board of Education.

Areas of Continued Growth
for Upcoming Year
(approximately 50 words)
Clark Elementary School will continue to foster a culture of continuous improvement by examining student work, providing deliberate and collaborative teacher/staff professional development, and providing student-centered coaching. Given the new learning modalities, collaboration and engagement continue to be redefined.

The racial identification of our students with origins in Southeast Asia or the Indian subcontinent does not clearly fit into the “black” and white racial identity that is part of the US Census Bureau’s ongoing reclassification system. When European groups arrived in the United States in the early 1800s, they were not immediately perceived as white. Similarly, Asian Americans aren't generally considered to be a single pan-ethnic race in Asia or “Black” or “White.”
