Burn size estimation for the same patient varies among burn experts, and inaccurate estimation leads to excessive or insufficient infusion. Thus we were motivated to find a burn estimation method that does not vary depending on the inspector at the same time it is easy to adopt for most clinical environments.

We found that BurnCase 3D® may be a promising candidate because it requires commodity smartphones for camera and runs on PC, requiring little extra investment for hardware. If burn estimation with the software is stable regardless of the inspector, it could contribute to reduced complication around burn treatment, which is the topic of this study.

We hope the topic merits reviewing for inclusion in the Burns journal, and thank you for your time on reading this work.

Sincerely,
Song, Jae Seok, M.D. Ph. D.

The Institutional Review Board at Michigan Technological University approved our research project, and considered our study as 'exempt' as it posed minimal risk to participants. We have also removed any individual identifiers and obscured the location of the study to further protect the participants privacy. And finally, the primary themes, earlier publications, and presentations generated from participant data has been made available to participants for comment, revision, or critique. We would like to publish our code-book associated with our data analysis, but to do not think it would be possible to maintain participant privacy without major redactions to the analysis.
