PURPOSE: Tests confirm that the horse is supple and moves freely forward in a clear steady rhythm, accepting light contact with the bit. The horse demonstrates greater understanding of the aids and calm acceptance of the bridle; greater emphasis is placed on relaxation, harmony, rideability and pure gaits. The horse is beginning to develop more impulsion and balance.RIDER #7891-1

Hi Points: A quality ride showing a confident and capable rider with athletic horse. Shows the ability to move forward.

Lo Points: Halts could be more balanced. Tempo increases on occasion. Right lead lope could show more ground cover. Rider sits slightly to left.

Focus: At times, tempo could be more steady, allowing horse to maintain more suppleness. When tempo increases, the horse is ahead of rider's aids.

Exercises: For the rider: Stretch tall in the saddle and turn your head to look over your left shoulder. Feel your weight come more solidly into your right stirrup.

At this level, the halt is still made from the walk, but, the move off at the beginning of the ride should be more prompt. A light and quick (repeated if necessary) use of leg is better than too much leg--which may result in the horse not being straight in going forward.

When tempo increases, especially in the jog, the poll becomes a little more stiff, decreasing suppleness. When this happens, a lighter seat and a more elastic "feel" on reins may work. Take connection on one rein, then give it away. Take back the connection, and then give away the other side. Never taking back roughly--always giving, so the horse is more apt to stretch into and look for the connection more softly. You can also take briefly and give on both reins--this may help increase the stretch you are looking for in the free jog.

I feel that your seat is balanced and used correctly, but, most of the time, riders over use seat aids and push horses over their balance and suppleness.

Work to achieve transitions from less hand and more from a light seat and closed leg. In your schooling, don't wait for the tempo to increase before correction this. Practice transitions before the horse speeds up.

The lopes, especially to the right, could be more active. Pick a place in your ring or on a fence line, and another point in 100 to 150 feet ahead. Count the number of strides you would normally use to get from point A to point B. Next time your ride that line, encourage your horse to jump forward more, making the line in one or two strides less,

Overall, I like the forward presentation. Work to be more steady and balanced.
