The beginning of the training year was abysmal. It took at least 2-3 months for me to see a patient. I didn't get to a full caseload and regular clinical hours until February. Didactics are often cancelled and replaced with an open DEI forum or trainees are asked to just watch old videos from the Kaiser archives during the allotted didactic time. My direct supervisor is too busy to be supervising practicum students and our time is often cut short. I'm asked to take cases or do things with little to no training beforehand and then told I should have more initiative when I'm hesitant in engaging in such tasks in a medical center without more guidance or shadowing.
This site has been poorly managed on every level over the past year. If they hire more staff the site may improve but students are currently being used as the workhorses for the departments (at least in pediatrics) instead of getting tailored or thoughtful training.

I was given adequate hours but not enough support or trust in my clinical judgment / training level when setting limits with client case load.
I experienced bias at this site due to my mental health concerns. To seek support, I had meetings with myself, the director, and my direct supervisor for a client I was requesting be transferred off my caseload due to their recurrent homophobia, fatphobia, and antisemitism. I was told I was taking things too personally, needed to seek more outside support, and should reconsider going into this field if unable to work with difficult clients. This site caused enough mental distress for me to take a leave of absence. I was rated poorly on my professional communication capabilities while on a medical leave. This poor rating may impact my ability to continue onto internship. I hope other PAU students are not placed at this site.

I really love my experience at this site, I have gained incredible clinical knowledge and experience working in pediatric behavioral health (inpatient C/L work and integrated primary care) which is nearly impossible to find at other practicum sites. I want to work in integrated pediatric primary care and I feel this site set me up well for an internship in this area.
The main concern I have with this site is that the didactic training is very generalist because its provided for all interns, post docs and practicum level students (combined all together in the same didactics), both child and adult, and both psychiatry and behavioral health. I dont feel I learn much that is specifically geared towards pediatric behavioral health. Additionally, group supervision is predominantly adult behavioral health providers, and thus, there is not much supervision directly for pediatric behavioral health. However, my supervisor, Dr. Janele Auranicky, is experienced in child, adolescent and adult behavioral health and I have learned so much from her.

My experience with Gronowski has improved since beginning the practicum. I believe it will continue to improve as Dr. Richards has been very responsive and detailed in his email notifications to the clinic staff. One concern is to improve TED or use a different remote system. TED tends to log users off frequently and can be frustrating when completing progress notes. The TED system interferes with productivity. There are usually connective issues as well.

that is a lot to ask of a trainee when lots of the sexism is coming from upper management. I would have appreciated if my supervisor would help be an advocate to women at the site. Overall, there is a lack of diversity among staff. Additionally, I have had clients make sexual comments towards me. I discussed this quite frequently in supervision.

This has been a terrible year given the strike and general state of the training program in this track, which is why they are not having a training program next year. My supervisors are great but limited by what Kaiser allows them to offer.
We aren't getting formal training/didactics within the track, which my supervisor would like to offer but cannot due to Kaiser constraining time, so I have never been trained in the treatment of EDs but an treating EDs. I'm also put in an uncomfortable position during intakes where I get to decide if a patient receives services or not, and I don't feel qualified for that. Also, per Kaiser's training manual and the site director, I am supposed to be receiving an extra hour of individual supervision (3H total) because they are not offering group supervision, but that is not being offered to me.

Group experience feels much more like case consultation. There are really no other aspects to group supervision besides that. At times, case load feels a little slow which slows down testing hours. Other than these two things, I do feel like I've learned so much as a budding neuropsychologist-in-training. I generally feel supported at the site. I have worked with diverse patients- clinically and culturally. I'd recommend the site to others without a doubt.

I am not a neuropsychology or forensic student, so my expectations of this site may differ from those who are used to assessment-heavy sites. There are aspects of my training that I thoroughly enjoy, and other aspects that are difficult for me (which I do bring up to both of my supervisors). I wanted more in-depth assessment training which this site offers, for which I am happy with. However, the learning curve was very steep (which was conveyed to me during the interview process). As a supplemental student sometimes I work more than my allotted hours, but the hours are flexible and I am able to (and feel comfortable with) flexing my time on a week-by-week basis. I've learned there is a huge difference being told there will be a steep learning curve vs. going through it, which is at times very overwhelming and the "imposter syndrome" is strong. Fortunately, that has become better to manage over the course of the year so far, and I receive helpful feedback from my supervisors about my concerns.

I love working with Dr. Hernandez and think she is a great supervisor and takes a social justice approach to supervision which is really important for working in la clinica latina. I think didactic training at Gronowski is minimal and unfortunately my schedule dictates which ones I can attend, so they are not necessarily the highest of interest for me. With the extensive staff turnaround, i feel bad for the other students in the practicum who did not have as continual support and supervision, however I have had an overall positive experience so far.
I think there should be more social justice incorporation into training in general (i feel as though clinica latina focuses on this, however the general clinic does not which i have witnessed through observing other intakes and discussing with peers in the general clinic), and more options for didactic trainings would also be beneficial.

I am not sure if I would recommend this training site to other students, even if the site was participating in the next year of BAPIC, because there have been many systemic changes and challenges that have impacted training and client care.
There has been high turnover at the site this year and positions have not been refilled; this has led to reduction in services and overwhelm from remaining employees. There was also a sudden termination of the only clinical staff, the previous Training Director/Clinical Supervisor, which the site was very unprepared for. It was clear the Executive Director of the agency did not understand the roles and responsibilities of the Training Director or Clinical Supervisor or the workings of the Counseling department, perhaps because her training is in business. This change resulted in 1-2 weeks of reduced/paused client care, major changes to the didactic training, and extensive labor on trainees to educate a temporary Clinical Supervisor from outside of the agency. Rather than receiving deeper, more personal, richer individual and group supervision with a supervisor I had built a relationship with over the year, I spend significant portions of supervision educating the new supervisor on administrative, systemic, and clinical matters while trying to build a supervisory relationship for a few months at the end of the training year. Many trainees including myself ranked SAVE due to the Gottman and EMDR training previously offered which is no longer possible with the supervisor change. Group therapy turnout is also extremely low (0-4 people) which is frustrating when extensive work goes into preparing materials. There is also a shortage of group supervision/didactics as we meet for a total of 2.5 hours.

The client population of individuals living in shelters can be extremely inconsistent in engaging in therapy. This makes it difficult to get a lot of clinical hours.
I was not harassed or treated poorly intentionally, but I experienced microaggressions around my gender identity as a nonbinary person from clients and other non-clinical shelter staff. The incident in question from another staff member did involve them apologizing, and I don't hold a grudge.

We have didactic time scheduled but group supervision time has always run over into didactic time.

Us students are not allowed to see patients independently. One to three of us shadow the sessions with our supervisor who is the primary provider. Our supervisor said that he intends on us shadowing at least one of each of the 12 CBT sessions, then he will shadow us doing each of the sessions, then we will be allowed to carry our own caseload but "not for a long time." There are three 4th year students and one 3rd year student at this site--I'm perfectly capable of doing CBT independently as I did in my 2nd year at Gronowski. When I tried to broach this, it was considered out of the question because the supervisor does a "developmental model."
