4/28/2017 15:31:42Chujo, JunkoNow I Got It! A Fun Guide to English Pronunciation Sanshusha Co.,Ltd.textbookAs globalized citizens, Japanese students need to be able to communicate with confidence in English and not depend on interlocutors to infer the meaning of speech not understood. In Japanese English instruction, while researchers have pointed out the lack of pronunciation instruction and identified it as a problem, instructional teaching strategies, procedures, and actual materials have not yet been developed to address this issue. The systematically designed pronunciation teaching materials released under the title Now I Got It! A fun guide to English pronunciation by Sanshusha Publishing was developed based on two core principles with the purpose for students to acquire a level of mutual phonological intelligibility with speakers who use English for communication. 1. Give priority to Japanese English learners’ psychological orientation in selecting and allying/organizing the materials for classroom-based implementation; 2. Make students autonomous learners to achieve self-monitoring and self-correction skills. Based on the literature review, both segmental features (16 consonants and 7 vowels) and suprasegmental features (stress, rhythm, and intonation) which has high possibility of compromising intelligibility for Japanese students were targeted for explicit instruction. The textbook will help educators in Japanese universities for English learners to help them attain confidence to hold an intelligible level of oral communication with interlocutors from across the world.
