Purpose of the Not White Dudes Malacology Reading List (NWDMRL)
The NWDMRL is a crowd-sourced list of publications authored by underrepressented minorities (URMs) working in malacology. URMs include women, people of color, LGBTQIA+, and disabled researchers.
The NWDMRL is intended to increase citation rates of malacological papers and other scholarly writings authored by URMs, whose work is often undervalued and overlooked in the natural sciences.
Since the goal of the NWDMRL is to increase the profiles of researchers outside European/North American-centric, male-dominated, heteronormative, and ableist ideas of who counts in natural sciences, a researcher of color need not be underrepresented in their country of residence to count as a URM for the purposes of this reading list.
The name "Not White Dudes Malacology Reading List" is intended to be humorous and to prompt malacologists to think critically about the demographic profiles of the most frequently cited authors and celebrated researchers in our fields.
