Fuertes ObservatoryFuertes Observatory is an astronomical observatory located on Cornell's North Campus. Fuertes is open to Cornell students and the general public every Friday night, hosted by the Cornell Astronomical Society. When clear, observing will take place from 8pm until midnight. Tours of the observatory and its historic telescopes will be given regardless of the weather. During the academic year, a lecture or astronomy-related documentary is often presented before observing.~ Admission is free.

Cornell CinemaOne of the best campus film exhibition programs in the country, screening over 150 different films/videos each year, five to seven nights a week in the beautiful Willard Straight Theatre. The space features the largest screen in Ithaca, Dolby Digital Surround Sound and the best projection in the area.

Each semester-long schedule includes an array of classic Hollywood and foreign films, documentaries, recent international cinema, silent films with live musical accompaniment, cult classics, experimental work, and recent Hollywood and arthouse hits, in addition to guest appearances by visiting filmmakers.

~ Both paid and free parking depending on time of day: the Willard Straight Lot, the Anabel Taylor Lot (some spots are unrestricted after 5pm — be sure to read the signs or you will be ticketed!), along South Avenue or Stewart Avenue, the lot off Edgemoor Lane, accessed via South Avenue and West Avenue, or the lower lot on the west side of Myron Taylor Hall, accessed via South Avenue. Parking is also available at the Schoelkopf Parking Garage, where there is ample space and it is free after 5pm. It's a less than 10 minute walk to Willard Straight.

Ithaca is renowned throughout our region for several beautiful parks that feature breathtaking waterfalls, opportunities for swimming, and hiking trails.

Robert Treman State ParkRobert H. Treman State Park is an area of wild beauty, with the rugged gorge called Enfield Glen as its scenic highlight. Winding trails follow the gorge past 12 waterfalls, including the 115-foot Lucifer Falls, to where visitors can see a mile-and-a-half down the wooded gorge as it winds its way to the lower park.

Buttermilk Falls State ParkButtermilk Falls State Park takes its name from the foaming cascade formed by Buttermilk Creek as it flows down the steep valley side toward Cayuga Lake. The upper park has a small lake, hiking trails through woodlands and along the gorge and rim, picnic areas and playing fields. The lower park has a campground, natural pool and playing fields, beyond which is Larch Meadows. Larch Meadows is a wetland area through which a nature trail winds.

Taughannock Falls State ParkWaterfalls
Taughannock Falls State Park's namesake waterfall is one of the outstanding natural attractions of the Northeast. Taughannock Falls plunges 215 feet past rocky cliffs that tower nearly 400 feet above the gorge.

Hiking
Offers extensive trail hiking. Gorge and rim trails offer spectacular views from above the falls and from below at the end of the gorge trail.

- Campsites and cabins overlook Cayuga Lake, with marina, boat launch and beach nearby. A multi-use trail--hiking, cross-country skiing--winds past sledding slopes and natural skating ponds.
- Offers scheduled gorge tours

- head to the quieter shore line at the North Point area for a lovely view of the lake
- In the spring, check out the wildflowers that bloom along the Gorge Trail. Flowers thrive there because deer rarely wander into the gorge.
- The hemlock forests surrounding the Taughannock ravine are mixed with other hardwood trees, including sugar maple, white oak, and striped maple. It's also home to many species of woodland birds.
- The shoreline at Taughannock Falls State Park drops off sharply, making this area a great congregating space for many different species of Lake Cayuga fish. Lake trout, yellow perch, and landlocked Atlantic salmon are all common species.

Cascadilla Gorge Natural Area Ascending over 400 feet, this historic set of stone trails and staircases was originally constructed in the late 1920's, and takes visitors through the gorge formed from ancient bedrock and past six waterfalls. ~ Free.
~ At a leisurely pace, this 1/3-mile section of the trail takes less than an hour from the Treman Triangle Park in downtown to the upper entrance by the College Avenue Stone Arch Bridge.
~ In Collegetown, the trail crosses College Avenue and the Goldwin Smith Walk continues to follow Cascadilla Creek for another half mile through a flat, wooded area that leads to two footbridges over scenic waterfalls.
~ The lower gorge from Linn St to College Ave is closed during the winter months, but the gorge above College Ave is open year round.

Ithaca Falls on Fall CreekWith a 150ft cascading fall, watch Fall Creek’s final plunge to Cayuga Lake, it's a great place to stop and enjoy a picnic lunch or relax with a book.

By 1817, a half-dozen mills were operating here, their ruins are still visible on the south bank. The plunge pool is famous among anglers for lake-run trout and salmon.

Sweedler Preserve at Lick BrookHas three major falls - 25ft, 47ft, and 93ft, in a hidden nature preserve. The centerpiece is managed by the Finger Lakes Land Trust, allowing Lick Brook to remain wild and undeveloped. The best time to view the waterfalls is after a rainstorm.~ Free.

~ Best viewing from the blue-blazed section of the Finger Lakes Trail. 1.2mi round trip. There is a steep, strenuous 500’ climb.

Triphammer Falls on Fall CreekTriphammer Falls is a 55ft multiple cascading fall, a centerpiece of the Cornell University campus.

Named for the Triphammer forge that operated here in the 1820s. University founder Ezra Cornell fell in love with this spot when he first arrived in Ithaca, and he made his name here building the first Beebe Lake Dam to deliver reliable year-round waterpower to mills downstream.
