| This tool is from the State of Colorado, however we feel it is a great resource when considering Health and PE and the impact for students with Disabilities
| Comprehensive Health & Physical Education Side-by-Side Support Tool
| Background | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Since Colorado currently has no state adopted alternate academic achievement standards for Comprehensive Health and Physical Education, this Side-by-Side Support Tool is offered as a resource to support teachers as they write standards-aligned IEPs for students with a disability, including those students with a significant cognitive disability who receive instruction on alternate academic achievement standards. The suggestions contained in this document were authored by volunteer workgroups composed of nurses, social workers, school psychologists, adapted physical education teachers, related service providers and teachers of students with significant support needs. Various related advisory groups also reviewed and contributed content and CDE's Office of Standards and Instruction content specialists were integral to the document's development as well. The contributions of all these dedicated professionals is gratefully acknowledged.
| Purpose | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Comprehensive Health & P.E. Side-by-Side Support Tool is intended to provide support for teachers and related service providers as they design appropriate individualized education programs for students, including students with a significant cognitive disability, and align the students' goals and objectives to the enrolled grade level Colorado Academic Standards whenever appropriate.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Organization | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Side-by-Side Support Tool is arranged with grade level tabs across the bottom. Within each grade level tab, you will find the Evidence Outcomes excerpted from the state-adopted Colorado Academic Standards for Comprehensive Health and Physical Education . The center column represents an Extended Pathway, or "Steps to Get There". These statements represent an essential concept or skill related to the enrolled grade level expectations. The right-side column offers Foundational Readiness Skills to Access the General Curriculum. These skills may be considered as access points that can suggest linkages to progress on the grade-level standard. When writing a standards-aligned IEP, the first step is to compare the student's present levels of performance with the skills required in the Evidence Outcomes. Skills that need acceleration are identified for specially designed instruction. The Steps to Get There may represent some reasonable activities or a learning trajectory toward the CHPE standard. These skills may also form the foundation for access to the general curriculum. Naturally, these are not full learning progressions, so teachers will need to add or customize skills for each student.
| Suggested Application
| The Foundational Readiness Skills to Access the General Curriculum are intended to identify content-based skills needed for the student to access the standards. These skills/strategies are to be customized for each student based upon their present level of academic achievement and functional performance; however, the suggestions may serve to outline a learning trajectory of short-term benchmarks, for the development of skills leading to mastery of the enrolled grade-level standards. The Foundational Readiness skills may also reflect non-academic, or functional skills needed in order for the student to access the general curriculum. The skills listed on the template are not intended to be inclusive. Additional objectives targeting specific readiness skills may be created to meet student need. Typically, objectives based on targeted skills are written in actionable, observable terms. While a specific skill may be identified at an earlier developmental level, the objectives still progress toward the enrolled-grade level standard. Please note that all student needs may not necessarily have a specific reference link to the Comprehensive Health and Physical Education Standards (e.g., orientation and mobility training), but many of the social, emotional, and health-related needs can be addressed in the Comprehensive Health & P.E. Standards. Any standard references on an IEP (academic or functional), including goals for students who receive instruction on alternate standards, would reference the enrolled grade-level CHPE Colorado Academic Standard.

| The Comprehensive Health and Physical Education standards focus on personal decision-making around emotional and social well-being, positive communication, healthy eating, physical activity, tobacco, drug, and alcohol abuse prevention and violence prevention. The standards underscore important skills for navigating today's society with its complex and often confusing messages around health, beauty, and happness.

The ALL Guide contains information and resources for developing a culturally-responsive classroom, a self-assessment tool, and an extensive list of resources devoted to meeting the needs of diverse students.
