2	Social	Culture, social attitudes, consciousness, population rates, age distribution, absencing v. presencing relfexes (Theory U)	Pressure to conform, be impressive; pressures and inherent alienation of living in capitalist consumer culture can create limitations on depth & support from community; family obligations;	Dissatisfaction within self, others, and environment creates opportunities for social change and creates openings for teaching, coaching, & consulting. Identifying nuclei of counter-culture provides opportunities to recharge/evolve, while also offering learning at the edges. Learning how to be an advocate rather than an activist = creating unity around problem solving rather than friction around differences. Younger generations more awake to the possibilities of aligned living.	Fear of ruffling feather or being ostracised for being different holds us back; resistance to new ideas could lead to backlash against us both within family and greater society; support network outside of family is iffy;	Personal: Solid foundation in learning and experience coupled with strong self-development work greately mitigates fear from threats.
3	Technological	Research & development; technological landscape of existing system;, the internet; personal tech; blockchain.	Fertile time for emerging green technologies; much existing tech is degenerative; highly dependent on screen tech for work and social interactions; social media and other tech well developed if easily co-opted.	Massive outreach and research capabilities; advocating for emerging technologies (social and actual) is a leading edge; blockchain has potential to expand transaction capabilities outside of dominant systems.	Screen tech hard on mental and physical health and can be socially isolating; massive outreach capability means massive competition for attention; surveillance is a constant threat; mind pollution; echo chambers.	Personal: Have developed good self-regulation around frivolous screen use – good at intentional use. Improving skills around employing social media and other online presence for advancement of career.
4	Economic	Dominant economic theories, emerging theories, interest rates, exchange rates, blockchain.	Economic model is failing society and environment; emerging models offer alternatives but lack buy-in from dominant players.	Using and promoting regenerative finance opportunities sets example and creates opportunities for change; engaging in multi-capital markets can be liberating; gig and sharing economies breaking some paradigms, crypto-currency disempowering government control.	Entrenched interests well positioned to resist change; my personal domestic situation dictates high income requirement - limits flexibility for livelhood activities.	Personal: Well versed in alternative economics; have developed passive sources of income; growing media attention around late-stage capitalism means my timing for graduation might be ideal.
5	Environmental	Urban characteristics, climate change, soil degradation, local energy economy.	Urban structures reinforce isolation and siloing of culture groups & concentrate polllution effects and strife effects; climate change possibly accelerating; soil degradation accelerating; solutions may lie in greater urban concentration but that requires re-evaluating urban design; severe water use challenges west of the mississippi and even moreso west of continental divide.	Growing evidence of degradation opens minds and opportunities for regenerative practices = opportunities for teachers and leaders; the worse the situation the more possibilities for policy change; Trump admin backing out of Paris accords has prompted increase in local governance around environmental issues.	Onslaught of problems leads to fear and absencing behavior, including inaction and entrenching. Curious backlash against climate action can be virulent.	Personal: Designing WWND and Coaching experience has opened up ways for me to help individuals face their fears and work towards change. Making inroads in organizational development as well.
6	Political	Government action/inaction at local, state, federal levels; political climate; infrastructure.	Politics highly polarized, lacking innovative problem solving; repression of innovative solutions evident; business and politics in bed; time of great flux.	I'm witnessing a return to localism which could create more opportunities for greater participatory democracy. Widespread dissatisfaction opens doors for new ways of framing challenges/solutions; explore link between diplomacy and systems design.	Fear-based radicalization of political views makes activism dangerous; global right-wing swing means political solutions stifled and past progress rolled back; entrenchment of right wing and business means fewer resources available for progressive solutions.	Since I first wrote this the emergence of the Green New Deal resolution has spurred and interesting shift in the political discourse. Neoliberals are freaking!
7	Legal	Laws & Policies	Many existing laws stifiling to innovation, biased in favor of business over people/environment	Federal courts acting as bulwark against extremist policy; rise in localism creating opportunities for policy change at a local level.	Federal courts likely to swing further right under Trump. Water rights laws in West deeply entrenched in power structures.	Harmful trends continue.
8	Ethical	Business ethics, community ethics & attitudes, corruption risks	Neoliberal theory creates ethical belief out of capitalism, which actually has no ethics as it is an organizing model. This has defined business culture and by extension popular culture, thus we have a growth in non-ethical culture (possible cause for mass unhappiness?). Unethical behavior is easily rationalized in such an environment. Integrating permaculture or other ethics into all design is a leap in sophistication; Need to be aware of our own ethical lapses as well as of external unethical behavior and how it impacts us or our projects.	Ethics can be a wonderful design tool & self auditing process; extending project ethics to account for all life yields innovative thinking; Helping others anchor in ethics could revolutionize how people show up in the world; and design businesses; validating and promoting conscious business ethics provides good leverage point for culture change.	People without ethical limitations will try to take advantage of you; self-awareness of ethical shortcomings can be stressful	Personal: Have developed lesson plans that introduce ethics as a design imperative. Interesting responses from participants. Seems a positive tool.
9		Pattern Reflections: If there is a single characteristic that stands out from these many sectors it is incipient change. So much change suggests that opportunities for directing change are abundant. With change also comes widespread anxiety and a general desire to believe that positive change is possible. Even though the dominant visible trends are towards what Theoy U calls absencing, that being a reflex to entrench in old patterns of thinking and being and to reject innovative visioning, this pattern also tends to worsen circumstances and thus increase the desire for positive alternatives. I believe these patterns indicate a ripe moment in history for disseminating ecosocial solutions.
