BEEST - Bitcoin Energy and Emissions Sustainability Tracker
2
License information: MIT license
3
Original Model up to Version 1.7 created and updated by Daniel Batten (@dsbatten)
4
5
Overall Emission Tracker pulls data from 1 dynamic external source and one calculated data source (which replaces the original CCEBI external data source used in previous versions)
6
7
1. Hashrate513.6EHSource(Glassnode)
I'm using the hourly graph, 168-hr rolling avg
Source2 (7 day average)
8
2. BTC Network (MW)
17,319.236GigawattsSource
(Calculated - see Mining Companies Breakdown tab)
9
10
Other sources are all manually entered values gained from field research, or derived calculations from research
11
12
What to track
13
14
The Carbon component of the network as it trends to zero
Currently -------------->
45.3%
15
16
How we chart it.
17
In collaboration with Willy Woo, we're now charting emissions, sustainable energy mix and 2 other derived charts

20
Why it matters
21
It's the single biggest thing the Whitehouse OTSP report said they were missing
Source: Troy Cross' assessment, latest WBD Podcast
22
Showing trendline in the right direction gives a lot of confidence, at a time of regulatory hostility (Senator bill about Bitcoin mining being launched now)

25
Anything else
26
Overall Emission Tracker is the most important tab. It also calculates national gridmix
27
"Mining Companies Breakdown" is the feeder into "BEEST Vx.x"
28
29
% of the network from each country (ongrid) comes from the Cambridge (CCIF) Bitcoin Mining Map
30
Where offgrid mining operations exist in that country (e.g: US, Canada), that nation's % is decreased to avoid double-counting
31
Kazakhstan adjusted down based on quantified shutdown (MW) since govt crackdown on Bitcoin Mining

32
33
Omissions in Cambridge Methodology
34
1. Does not measure off-grid mining (Offgrid mining is significantly more renewable-based)
35
2. Uses only Foundry Pool data for US miners (which most ERCOT (Texas) miners don't use. ERCOT is 55.1% clean energy. So this understates clean energy component
36
3. Does not measure flared/vented methane mining
(1.71% of the network)
Source
Note: % has decreased from 2.36% due to hashrate increase since original report written
37
The data "Offgrid + Islanded (ERCOT)" measures the data that Cambridge does not measure (offgrid), or largely does not measure (ERCOT)
