DC LOWER END (all by car, fewer post-challenge monitoring visits)71.5Note: the high-end visit count implies the volunteer remains negative/asymptomatic (I cut the "miscellaneous" time spent in half, because that includes buffer time representing you being sick — which we can assume will happen to at least some volunteers in the trial, but very likely a minority). Evening visits are rare and likely will not happen at all — the sole exception would be if you needed to come back in for a blood test and wanted to do so the same day, or aft malaria is confirmed and they want to bring you in to take the pill. All DC estimates assume you take advantage of the AirBnb in Baltimore for the period of time where you have to come in for the short AM blood draw visits (which, again, depends on when/if you develop malaria).

* 1Day Sooner is planning on an AirBnB and/or coworking space near the site of the study. Details will be finalized once we have a final headcount, sometime in December.

Estimated roundtrip travel time by car from downtown DC2.5By personal car from downtown DC: assumes up to 2.5 hours roundtrip, including parking and walking to CVD. This is a tad liberal, 2 hours is also possible. Carpool might add +.5 for everyone involved on average. By the MARC train from Union Station, assumes 4 hours (2 hours on the train, 30 mins to get to Union Station, 30 mins to get to CVD, and an extra hour of waiting on the way back (a more liberal estimate)).

Visit timesVariableSee chart above. Based primarily on the estimates from the informed consent doc plus a dash of my personal experience with CVD in this trial thus far and the Shigella trial. Some of the longer visits just involve a bit of waiting at the center (e.g. the vaccinations, you gotta wait for them to prepare it bespoke, and then wait 30 minute for observation afterwards) where you can get a modest amount of stuff done.

Miscellaneous 12Dr Lyke was confident that most people will not experience malaria symptoms serious enough to majorly interfere with day-to-day activity because treatment will be initiated very soon after the parasite is detected in the blood. Also, the vaccine is probably (though there is no guarantee) decently effective, at least based on a preliminary small-cohort study, and only 1/4 participants will receive a placebo. This number assumes that you /do/ get sick such and lose a full eight-hour work day of productivity, and at at least one point, a blood draw has numbers so off such that they feel the need to do another one, which would necessitate another visit.
