James L. "Jim" Fern placed a high value upon the importance of music education demonstrated through his work as a music teacher, music administrator and Executive Secretary of the Kentucky Music Educators Association. He was a Kentucky band director in Benton, Hopkinsville, Livingston County, Marshall County, and Reidland and served as a guest conductor of instrumental ensembles and adjudicator in the Quad-State area for many years.

Jim served as president of the Gamma Delta Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha at Murray State University while a student and was honored as Kentucky’s outstanding educator by the Hopkinsville Jaycees Club, and by the Kentucky Music Educators Association with their Citation for Service and Distinguished Service Awards. His contagious enthusiasm, energy, devotion and commitment had a positive impact upon many people.
