It reinvents itself every season, so it doesn't become boring and it has a fresh new storyline each season, that still ties in with the other seasons, it has a lot of great Sci-fi aspects from AI to space, and it has an extremely rich mythology that starts in s1 and continuously develops every season. It has 6 seasons so far and its better than ever. It has action, adventure, drama and horror vibes all in one show. There are also so many badass, well developed characters and character relationships. So with a fantastic plot, characters, writing and cinematography, why not give this show a go?

05/07/2019 00:55:02María Sol12 MonkeysIt’s been over a couple of years since I started watching it thanks to a recommendation I found in an article of this very same section. I had heard about the movie years ago but never watched it and I knew there was a show based on it currently airing, but I didn’t had much idea about what was it about, so I was pleasantly surprised to find a story full of multi-layered characters, mind-blowing twists and good quality time travel that keeps getting better in every episode. I haven’t been able to watch its fourth and final season, but I know I’m going to like it as much as the previous ones, and that’s why I invite you to start it this summer. Once you do it, you won’t want it to end.

29/06/2019 23:40:32Lucy F.AbsentiaOn the second season, the show returns more intense, if possible. The plot is brilliantly threaded through the 10 episodes, with multiple twists. And photography speaks as loud as dialogues, incredibly beautiful at some points. Cast gives amazing performances. But I can't describe all this properly, please watch Absentia!Amazon Prime

04/07/2019 19:17:01ThenorthremembersAbsentiaThis show had me at Stana Katic but hooked me with her performance playing a damaged complex and compelling gritty character that is a stark contrast to Castle’s Beckett. After being abducted by a notorious serial killer FBI agent Emily Burke is found with no memory of the past six years Emily’s attempts at normalcy as she struggles to reconnect with her family and loved ones are thrown into disarray as she grapples with trauma and suddenly finds herself thrust into a conspiracy that may hold the answers to her missing years. A fast pace plot with twists and shockers that constantly keep you guessing but ultimately at the heart is a relatable story of a woman who not only attempts to put her life back together but also her mind and her soul.

05/07/2019 05:57:16LouAct, TheSometimes truth is stranger than fiction and the real true crime story that The Act S1 dramatises is definitely an odd one. In a way the less you know the better but the season follows the story of Dee Dee Blanchard (played by the excellent Patricia Arquette) and her constantly sick daughter Gyspy (please give Joey King all the awards) and an act of shocking violence. The show masterfully reveals just what the hell is going on and the truth is disturbing. Really excellent series that is a must for any fan of true crime or anyone that likes a well-acted mystery story. Even though I knew the real events I still found the entire thing compelling.Hulu

Battlestar Galactica (2004)
Battlestar Galactica should be used as a blueprint for how to reboot a show. The creators took a show that was cancelled after a couple of seasons but had an interesting premise and transformed it into a grand space opera that also held up a mirror to the real-life wars that were happening at the time. The twists were genuinely shocking, the effects were impressive for early 2000s on a basic cable channel and the actors were outstanding. Led by two Oscar nominated actors in Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell the cast made viewers feel not only the horrors of war but also its mundane grind, the seemingly neverending effort to fight an overwhelming enemy. If space operas aren’t your thing then how about a family drama? Because Battlestar Galactica does that too. There are betrayals and secrets and love triangles that test bonds between family and friends which deliver just as many gasps as a dogfight. You root for the heroes, want to punch out the villains, and when the line between the two gets murky Battlestar Galactica is at its finest. Amazon Prime

02/07/2019 14:34:19MissionsBig Little Lies If you’ve never heard of the ladies of Monterey, then that must a Big Little Mistake, because “Big Little Lies” captured the zeitgeist in a way that no other show did in 2017. On paper, it doesn’t sound all that great, much like when you watch some of the first moments: rich people complaining about their lives even though they have absolutely anything? Well, let me tell you that this show is about so much more. But a big reason why “Lies” ended up being such a phenomenon is the peeling open of each and every character, exposing their very human, relatable vulnerabilities. I promise you that by the time the season one finale credits roll, you will be stunned. Not only because of the show’s immaculate balance between drama and comedy, its unique and atmospheric direction by Jean-Marc Vallée, or its delicious melodrama that you eat up with a spoon, but also because of the king-size talent that is the star-studded cast. I could write a novel about the high quality of every performance, but you will see it for yourself. And If you’re scared about a sophomore slump, don’t worry, because season two is just as good. ////////Oh, and two words: Meryl Streep. HBO Go, HBO Now, Sky Atlantic

Bless This Mess first season was only 6 episodes but I quickly fell for its charms. The leads (Lake Bell and Dax Shepard) are instantly likeable and really carry the first few episodes as the comedy finds its feet. The fish out of water story bring plenty of opportunities for comedy as they clash with the locals and realise they are out of their depths. A gentle charming comedy that I hope will continue its upward trend in quality with its second season. With the short season it is easy to catch up with.Available to catch up on via Hulu

29/06/2019 18:03:32ThenorthremembersBodyguardPretty basic premise soldier is assigned to protect a cutthroat politician whose ideals oppose his own and gets thrown into a conspiracy but its so much more than that. Its one of those political conspiracy psychological thriller shows where the mystery gets deeper and more fascinating with a damaged protagonist in the centre of it persevering against all odds as the build up of suspense keeps you at the edge of your seat as you watch much like early years Homeland. Richard Madden plays such a deep intriguing character who while good at his job seems to be in a constant state of emotional and mental struggle and distress as David Budd a dutiful soldier turned police sergeant Madden conveyed the nuances of a family man struggling with PTSD while doing his duty which clashed with his ideals and political stance in a believable and compelling way that made him more than deserving of his Golden Globe win I was worried I’d only ever see him as Robb Stark but his work on this show proved me wrong.Netflix

01/07/2019 11:11:03LauraLoo77BoJack HorsemanTackling the after effects of becoming a household name after being on a sitcom for several years, BoJack Horseman, the show and the titular character, show the brutality of life in Hollywoo(d). It's not without depression, anxiety, addiction, and complete alienation of yourself from any friends or family you might have. It's dark, it's often so brutal that it sends me to an early grave. But it's so worth it. The characters are unique and brilliantly written and voiced. Will Arnett breathes life to his character that this is the character he should be known by. Each season tackles a different issue, all expertly interwoven with sleek continuity. Even the throwaway background gags are stellar. To watch this portrait of mental recovery adjacent to a show that tackles a myriad of other issues is overwhelming at times. We don't deserve a show like this. An animated cartoon about anthropomorphic characters on Netflix should not be one of the greatest shows ever made. But it is. And it would be a disservice to yourself and to the show not to watch it. There's something in it for everyone. And it's not all bleak; there is hope. Especially if you watch it.Netflix

Teaming up with equally stubborn and determined yet empathetic FBI Agent Seeley Booth they pair up to solve the most bizarre and unusual crimes often clashing with each other over their opposing ideologies. While a series long love story at heart it also has quirky humor and just as interesting supporting characters you invest in their interactions with one another as much as the cases they solve you will laugh cry and feel sentimental all at once. And as someone who passionately hates the cliched will they or won’t they gimmick I say with the utmost sincerity Brennan and Booth are one of the best written TV couples I have ever watched.

05/07/2019 19:05:07ThenorthremembersBreaking BadWhen it was announced that a sequel movie was in the works I felt it was my civic duty as an avid watcher to give the rundown to new watchers. Walter White is a mild everyday chemistry teacher who struggles to make ends meet helping his family and especially his son who has CP. Walter’s life takes a turn for the worse when he is diagnosed with severe lung cancer rather than financially ruin his family he teams up with a petty drug dealer and uses his knowledge of chemistry to make meth. As the series goes on Walt goes from a man with good intentions to becoming someone addicted to the life of selling drugs as the drugs themselves he begins making choices that are darker and more ruthless as he tries to outmaneuver rival dealers and his federal agent brother in law working to take him down. The characters are dark but understandable and the stories are graphic but the phenomenal storytelling is why this show...no...this masterpiece more than won its share of awards and nominations.

Each character is armed with an arsenal of traits and quirks that make them unique and relatable. This show values representation, and also takes care of its badass females. Andre Braugher’s Captain Holt has given this show such depth and stoicism that it has become must-see-TV. Many people have cited Andy Samberg’s Jake Peralta as the reason they don’t watch the show because of his, “over-the-top, childish, and immature behavior.” However he grows and matures throughout the series, mostly thanks to his relationship with Amy Santiago. She helps him become a better person and the show is better for it. Dan Goor is one of the best showrunners in existence: he values our opinion and strives to craft not only one of the funniest shows of our time, but also one of the smartest. In addition to cracking the best jokes, they’ve tackled all sorts of serious issues. This show is worth everyone’s time, and don't just take my word for it. That premise may seem like a lot, but this show handles its growth in spades, blends together all genres effortlessly, all while entertaining you. The characters are hilarious; they grow on you immediately. Chuck himself is in a position where he has great camaraderie with everyone. Zachary Levi portrayed him to be damn likeable, and you root for this protagonist in every possible outing. Each season sees Team Bartowski take on exciting villains. They aren’t one-dimensional and have a lot of plot dedicated to making them not only devastating, but grounded in reality. The soundtrack is another excellent selling point of the show, as I've found many new musicians through Chuck. This stays true from beginning to end. Yeah, the finale was not everything desired, but it didn't stop doing what the show promised; making you feel good while watching, delivering a thrill ride every week, and making you ponder what you would do if you were in Chuck’s position. 30/06/2019 15:21:02MiloCobra KaiLegacy sequels are everywhere, and it’s becoming increasingly hard for most to justify their reason for being. I’ll admit, a sequel to The Karate Kid – a cheesy 80s Karate knockoff of Rocky - wasn’t high on my watchlist initially but I was quickly proved wrong from the word go. With episodes only 30 minutes long, it’s absolutely worth your time – as we catch up with Johnny Lawrence, defeated opponent of Daniel LaRusso, all these years later. He’s a drunk and a layabout until he decides to relaunch the once feared karate dojo Cobra Kai, bringing old rivalries back to the forefront and giving himself a purpose in the process.

The show’s premise is ingenious – what if the villain was the hero? And it brilliantly – by using clips of the original movie told through flashbacks – shows that Daniel could be just as much as an antagonist as Johnny was depicted, wisely giving depth to both characters whilst still capturing the cheesy spirit of the original. On top of this - with the original cast reprising their roles - and updating its approach for the modern era, Cobra Kai is a perfect quick, summer binge.

01/07/2019 02:21:42Milo MJComrade DetectivePretty much the poster show for the best series that you’ve never seen, Comrade Detective pays homage to the classic action movies like Lethal Weapon and Point Break. But with a unique twist – it’s from the perspective of the Communists, set in Romania in the middle of Cold War hysteria, following detectives Gregor Anghel and Iosef Baciu investigating the murder of a fellow officer that plunges them straight into a conspiracy that pits them against Russia’s greatest enemy – capitalism.

With plenty of comedic elements that will play well to those who have a knowledge of the events of the Cold War and the political landscape of the era, Comrade Detective is a bizarre, brilliant show that is truly one of the biggest surprises of 2017 coming almost out of nowhere. It bills its premise as a ‘show within a show’, with its show being a lost, recently rediscovered cult hit that counted Stanley Kubrick of the Comrade Detective world among its beloved fans. On top of this it’s been dubbed into English with the help of an all-star voice cast that includes Channing Tatum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Nick Offerman.

05/07/2019 05:51:20LouCorporateHave you ever worked a soul sucking job? Then Corporate is the comedy for you. It is a very dark satire about working for a corporation which is pretty evil. It follows Matt and Jake as they try to get through the working day. Lance Reddick is a real gem as the morally dubious Christian DeVille and Anne Dudek is also great as Jake and Matt's boss. The show it most reminds me of is the sadly miss Better Off Ted. Corporate can get dark at times but is always fun and even if you haven’t work that office job that makes you hate life I still think the comedy translates well.

01/07/2019 11:03:31LauraLoo77Crazy Ex-GirlfriendRachel Bloom starred as Rebecca Bunch, and she was the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. (Wait, that’s a sexist term, but the show knows it too.) The true anti rom-com if there ever was one, CEG valued representation, and respectfully covered a myriad of issues. I've never seen a show discuss mental health like this one. It didn't romanticize or shy away from showing what really goes on in someone like Rebecca’s head. She desired a proper diagnosis and therapy for her borderline personality disorder, and the show set out to show a woman in healing, and it delivered. It's also a musical, so try and appreciate the quirky songs for what they are, because most are truly iconic. Most notably is “Gettin’ Bi”, a “Hip to be Square” tribute where Darryl Whitefeather, Rebecca’s boss, decides to come out to the office as bisexual. There are so many other fantastic pieces too. The cast of characters were all layered and spectacular in their own rights. The dialogue was genius-level at times. The way it blended drama and comedy together is enjoyable. It was fun ride every single week and is most definitely worth giving it a try; it ended really satisfyingly too.Netflix, Amazon Prime, CW

Given the nature of their assignments each member is confronted with the struggles that come from loving two live and the toll that playing a drug dealer or a killer or a thief takes on them often times wondering which parts of those aliases are just a cover or really them. Stuck together on their ship, with an android that can’t seem to offer any answer to their immediate burning questions about who they are and why they don’t remember, these strangers must band together figure out their pasts, or more accurately decide if they even want to do so. That is the main set-up of Dark Matter, a space opera that ran on SyFy for three seasons and was cancelled well before its time (and on a rather mean cliffhanger to boot. Even so: WATCH IT!). Don’t let the cheap campy feel of the show fool you. The marvelous writing, intricate yet cohesive plotting and the amazing performances by this brilliantly talented cast transcend any budgetary shortcomings the show may have had. In its core Dark Matter explores themes about humanity, it asks questions about what actually makes us human, it addresses the “nature vs nurture” debate, tackles the notion of redemption and forgiveness and constantly refuses to shy away from difficult existential questions while never forgetting to embrace its identity of being a small sci-fi show and have fun with it.

30/06/2019 15:47:05MiloDeadwoodFew shows have better dialogue than Deadwood. It's the closest anything on television has ever come to being Shakesperean, with multiple long thought out exchanges between characters in the small frontier town of Deadwood. Every character has a rich enough story to tell a multiple novel series, and showrunner David Milch knows how to utilise them well. Particularly in the case of Ian McShane’s Al Swearengen, who is one of the all-time great TV villains. The show also drew on the mythology of the wild west featuring its own interpretations of historical figures like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, but populated Deadwood with its own brilliant creations, responsible for boosting the career of actors like Timothy Olyphant and more.

Cancelled after three seasons on HBO but recently brought back for a wrap-up movie that works both as an epilogue and a sequel with characters reprising their roles, Deadwood offers a slightly different experience to any television show that you’ve ever seen before. It’s a dirty show, not afraid to show blood and gore coming up with some of the best insults on television in the process, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

01/07/2019 02:43:11Milo MJExorcist, TheWilliam Friedkin’s The Exorcist is one of the scariest horror movies ever made (and one of the best), and Fox’s two season long series that deals with a different case of supernatural mysteries is one of the hidden gems of network television, boasting fantastic scares that rival the best around but also well thought out, rich storytelling. The plot is simple, making use of the partnership between Father Tomas Ortega, a progressive leader of a surburban Chicago parish and Marcus Brennan, an old-school Vatican soldier, and pitting them against evil in all its forms with fantastic results.

Alfonso Herrera and Ben Daniels star with roles for Geena Davis and John Cho that really help make this show a case for one of the best horror shows around, taking The Exorcist in a new way that feels faithful to the source material, even if it is a short-lived slow burner it is a ride that’s every bit worth taking. It’s second season is even stronger, and by the end you’ll be mourning its cancellation with the rest of us.

02/07/2019 11:12:54ThenorthremembersFalling SkiesA show about survival and endurance. Many years after aliens have invaded Earth Professor Tom Manson joins the resistance against the invaders to find his missing sons who was abducted by them while Tom looking for his son is the main plot the show is very much an ensemble that depicts the lives of the freedom fighters and their relationships with one another the secondary characters become as interesting as the protagonist as the show goes in depth into their history and backgrounds. More also is the mystery of the aliens who don’t actually appear until much later in the series and the suspense of their reveal is half of what made the show. The effects are superb for a basic cable show and the action and grounded stories balance well.

04/07/2019 16:39:18Jon XVIFarscapeThe show that really put the then Sci-Fi Channel (today SyFy) on the map. If you're a fan of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy you'll be right at home. This show was a major inspiration to James Gunn.

After accidentaly opening a wormhole during a test flight Commander John Crichton is flung across the the galaxy, ending up in a battle between the military Peacekeepers and a group of prisoners hijacking their prison ship, a living bio-mechanoid ship named Moya. Brought on board Crichton soon finds himself on the run together with the strange alien crew.

Filmed in Australia it was the complete opposite of most sci-fi that was avalible at the dawn of the new millenium. After an initial grace period it becomes heavily serialized. Mixing drama, action, tragedy and off-beat Aussie humor. Delivered by flawed interesting characters.

Jim Henson's Creature Shop used all their knowledge to build fantastic creations that despite being puppets and animatronic robots feels like fully realized cast members and taking full advantage of it's two leads insane chemistry Farscape includes one of the most epic TV romances on a sci-fi show.

It's wild, anarchic and will change your life if you let it.

05/07/2019 11:07:16Ellys CartinFind Me In ParisSomewhere near Netflix's Greenhouse Academy sits Hulu’s endearing dramedy about a time traveling ballerina princess who finds herself transported to present day Paris. Jessica Lord’s Princess Lena grows to love the modern world, especially her new friends and ballet school classmates. Meanwhile, her bumbling yet kindhearted boyfriend Henri tries to evade timecatchers to search for a way to bring Lena back to the past. The primary charm though is watching Lena’s new relationships develop. Eubha Akilade is a scene stealer as Ines, Lena’s practical roommate-turned-best friend. Rory J Saper’s Max definitely makes more hearts than just Lena’s flutter. Hijinks and rivalries ensue, all of which keep the show clipping along. While ballet is a large part of the story, it’s by no means the only type of dance or activity that the students get involved in. An underground hip hop dance group factors in as well. The show steers clear of sudsy drama, but it’s still satisfying to watch the characters overcome their individual hurdles. It never gets too serious though, because here come that trio of cloak-wearing timecatchers set on kidnapping. Find Me In Paris falls squarely into the bread pudding genre of TV shows. It’s perfect to relax with. (///// take out 1)Hulu

04/07/2019 19:33:53GatorFanForeverWhat would you do if you could live forever? In New York City medical examiner Dr. Henry Morgan’s case, he has done a lot over 235 years. Yet, he views the gift that fate bestowed upon him in 1814 after defying a captain’s order to let the crew throw an ill slave overboard as a curse. He chooses to live his life in seclusion, with all but Abe, his elderly roommate, not knowing the truth about him. When a fatal subway crash which kills him and 15 others leads Detective Jo Martinez to him, he finds his life changing…forever.

If you like stories about history, family, friendship, and learning how to live life again, Forever is for you. The characters are very well-drawn, and the special effects and the set and costume designs are truly believable. The stories are well researched. The plot contains a little of everything that you can imagine: mystery, suspense, romance, even comedy. The only objection is that it is an one-season show, with the network leaving fans on a cliffhanger and with many unanswered questions that arise during the season. Still, Forever is a show which you should certainly check out.

05/07/2019 10:19:57Darthlocke4FrontierIf you're looking for historical drama that almost has it all, then look no further! Netflix' Discovery Canada series Frontier offers a diverse cast of characters of both local and international talent, while having brutality similar to Game of Thrones, but with the romance and historical nuance of Outlander, while also having a twinge of an adventurous spirit, like Pirates of the Caribbean.

It's a revenge story centered around a half Irish, half Cree man named Declan Harp amidst the ruthless plights of the North American fur trade of the late 1700's, including his arc nemesis, the scrupulous Lord Benton, who heads up the Hudson Bay Company at Fort James. The series also has a great cast led by none other than Aquaman's Jason Momoa! The cinematography is also unique and it has some rather well-choreographed battle sequences.

It currently finished it's third season just last fall, but the third season ends in such a way, where it could serve as an "ok" place to end the series, should it not come back. One really good reason to give it try anyways, is because it does offer diverse characters with a lot of intersectionality, often not seen in historical dramas.

It's a wonderful British period piece like no other, breaking the mold by boldly showcasing lesbian relationships, mental illness, obsession, alcoholism, and sexual abuse, and it's lead protagonist occasionally breaks the fourth wall!

The story of three women, who turn to crime in their desperation, keeps you on the edge of your seat and always guessing. Combining the mythos of The X-Files with the quirky characters of, well, a kid’s show, Gravity Falls is an insanely creative animated cartoon. Follow the Pines twins, Dipper and Mabel, as they embark on a summer vacation at their great uncle’s tourist trap/home, The Mystery Shack. Only nothing is what it seems, not even their uncle. Dipper is convinced that there are hidden mysteries abound. Mabel, on the other hand, just wants to have a fun summer and fawn over cute boys. (She is a lot better than she sounds, also being fiercely loyal and morally good throughout.) They run into other adorable characters and some truly scary scenes. This show pushed the boundaries on what we should consider appropriate for kids, all the while enriching their imaginations and creative abilities. With seamless animation and excellent serialization in later episodes, this show has widespread appeal for any type of TV watcher. Rich characters and larger than life villains, combined with slick mythologies, make this the perfect time to join the Pines family on their quest to figure out what’s what.Disney XD

02/07/2019 14:56:26MissionsHandmaid's Tale, The Praise be! That’s how you greet people in the nation of Gilead on “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Believe or not, with the anti-abortion movements reaching horrific heights, women’s rights eroding, and a misogynistic president sitting in the White House, the lines between current-day US and the harrowing realities of Gilead are starting to blur. “Handmaid’s” is about a country led by a religious, totalitarian regime that classifies its citizens, especially women, who are either wives, marthas, econowives, aunts, or handmaids. Handmaids are fertile women that are forced to bear children for the leaders, known as the Commanders, the highest ranked men in Gilead.

Elisabeth Moss leads the pack with a career-defining, maybe even TV-defining, performance as June Osbourne, a broken yet rebellious woman whose enslavement doesn’t eat up her strength to fight back. The rest of the cast is just as immaculate, with Ann Dowd and Yvonne Strahovski sending chills down your spines as Aunt Lydia and Serena Joy Waterford, and Alexis Bledel delivering a heartbreaking turn as Emily. The otherworldly cinematography is some of the best on TV, the score is dream-like yet downright terrifying, and the writing is absolutely superb. It’s an incredibly tough sit, but it’s such powerful television. (////// plus 2 more) So may the lord open this show to you!

04/07/2019 16:14:52LauraLoo77Hang UpsHang Ups is a British dramedy starring Stephen Mangan, with a fervent performance as Richard, the patriarch of an ever-growing family. A once thriving therapist who was forced to quit after suffering a nervous breakdown of his own, he begins an at-home practice from the comfort of his living room and using his laptop to have therapy sessions with his former clients, and some brand new ones, over Skype. Meanwhile, everything else in his life is in shambles. His wife may or may not be getting too close to a coworker, his daughter and son are always off doing god knows what, his own therapist is constantly grilling him for information, and a patient is later revealed to be a bit more dangerous than originally thought. With quirky and absurdist humour, hilarious situations that you can watch as an escape from your own troubles, this show is remarkably short at only a 6 episode freshman season, perfect for a nice and easy binge. It does end in a series of astonishing cliffhangers, which is almost another commentary at the absurdity of life and how closure can be so difficult to come by. 03/07/2019 13:14:42Ellys CartinHarlotsHarlots is like The Handmaid's Tale but there's way more bows on the costumes and the female characters have much more power. Actually this show has very little in common with Hulu's favorite child. Few shows can so deftly balance wit, raunch, tragedy, humor, and a killer cast with the aplomb that Harlots does. The show has wigs, fuchsia gowns, schemes, and murders. To address the powdered elephant in the bedchamber, there is also sex happening. In the background. It's the wallpaper of the show, the foundation of its characters' commerce. It is not gratuitous though. The characters, most of whom are women (there has never been more interesting women and talented actresses in one TV show ever), carve out a place in society for themselves through their pluck and backstabbing. Come for Samantha Morton, Lesley Manville, and Jessica Brown Findlay's saucy, ferocious performances and cutting one-liners. Stay for the entire array of lovable characters. 04/07/2019 19:31:38Folie-lexHart Of DixieHart of Dixie chronicles the story of Dr. Zoe Hart a promising big city doctor who after a bout of bad luck in her career and her personal life decides to take up the offer of joining the practice of a small town physician in the middle of nowhere Alabama, learning some long lost secrets about herself in the process. Big city Yankee girl, in a small southern town? You can only imagine the humour that ensues. This adorable “fish out of water” romantic dramedy that is reminiscent of the classic The WB shows of old, uses its built in strengths to their full extent: Rachel Bilson’s disarming easy charm and effortless on screen charisma, a zany little town with crazy but lovable locals, and some dreamy men to ogle at. The supremely talented cast (keep an eye out for Wilson Bethel in particular) only help to elevate those elements. However it’s the show’s strong writing, with its consistent character development and cohesive narrative that really sets it apart. The way it also navigates some of the genre’s worse tropes (love triangles and will-they-won’t-they’s) simply work to its benefit.

Haunting of Hill House, The
When I first read up on “The Haunting of Hill House,” I thought it’d be an easy pass: another horror series plagued by unnecessary jump scares, gratuitous violence and twists that I could smell from a mile away? No thank you. But after I saw the opening ten minutes, I realized that this was an ambitious, non-typical horror show that was going to delve into the characters it presented to us. There’s not all too much I can say about the show without spoiling major developments, but it’s one of my favorite shows of 2018. It’s a dark, exhilarating, character-driven drama, where the horror is rooted in the tragic fallout of certain events that occur at Hill House. Director (of all ten episodes) and writer Mike Flanagan is an absolute genius who does the impossible by defying all horror genre clichés. The cast is an embarrassment of riches, from leading lady Carla Gugino to all its supporting players, including arguable standouts Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Kate Siegel and Victoria Pedretti. There’s not much more I can say, but keep an eye out for episodes five and six, which are some of the most outlandishly good episodes of TV I have ever seen. Netflix

29/06/2019 18:23:05ThenorthrememebersHouse MDI hate medical dramas not because of the genre because everything I have seen since this show paled in comparison none of the doctors were memorable or compelling as Gregory House a medical genius who lacks bedside manners he will figure out what ails a patient and how to treat it but along the way he will do things that will shock even disgust his patients and colleagues. House is a pain killer addict but a brilliant diagnostician who hates dealing with people he feels are beneath him to him its more about the mystery illness that his patient suffers more than their well being. Thanks to his team originally consisting of the eager Chase (Jesse Spencer) Foreman who reigns House in from going too far Cameron (Jennifer Morrison) a good hearted doctor who puts patients first and Wilson the only friend House will ever confide in or go out of his way for House solves the most baffling medical cases in the most duress of circumstances and in rare instances despite being an all around jerk will show rare instances of humanity.

How to Get Away With Murder
When someone asks me what‘s so great about “How to Get Away With Murder,” then I don’t initially know how to answer? Is it the unpredictable twists thrown at viewers left and right, the incredibly juicy dialogue, or the fully realized characters? My ultimate answer: all of that, but most of all the performance by leading lady Viola Davis, who plays Annalise Keating, a brilliant lawyer who burries her struggles under the mask she wears every single day. “Murder” is a show that didn’t have a great trailer and didn’t initially spark my interest; I didn’t need another show about college students and their sex life. Thankfully though, “Murder” wasn’t that show at all. If you’re looking for something that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat, your eyes glued to the screen, then this is the perfect show. It incorporates a murder mystery, crime thriller, and character drama into one fabric. I promise you that you won’t be able to smell the twists from a mile away. But what arguably stands out most is how daring this show can be, whether it’s a woman going to bed without makeup or a gay couple front in center. Netflix, ABC

02/07/2019 17:21:31LauraLoo77InstinctCBS decided to do the unthinkable last year: team up with Alan Cumming, the legend, to create the first gay male lead on a network drama. They also, unprecedentedly, renewed it for a second season despite dismal ratings. Indeed, all other broadcast networks should hang their hats in shame. But is it actually good? The short answer is that it's so bad that it's good. It's a magnificently dumb show. It basically has two pilots. It has a bunch of cookie-cutter character development. Dylan rides a motorcycle. He's writing a book and his publicist is Whoopi Goldberg. But Dylan and Andy's relationship? That's your real reason to watch. Their marriage is so refreshing. It's a pre-established relationship that cleverly and thankfully means that they avoid having to have enervating coming out scenes and that awful will-they-won't-they trope between the main male and female leads that cannot die out soon enough. Their chemistry is so well realized and adorable. There was even a regular procedural episode at one point that was wall-to-wall intersectional and inspiring. I would recommend to watch the show, and call it what it is: a guilty pleasure with immense potential to be even more someday. Amazon Prime, CBS

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Name me 10 shows set to air their 14th season that are still capable of producing content that is on par with the absolute best they are capable of. Then throw Sunny at the top of that dwindling list. Yes, it's true, Sunny is not for the faint of heart. This is a show about the most deplorable people. They say disgusting things, do disgusting things, they are disgusting people. If that's a problem for you, then it may not be the show for you. If you can stomach these things, then there's a lot to love. Not to say it's all bad. It has one of the best coming out stories of all time, and some of the best acted work from a comedy is on display. I would truly call Sunny the king of comedy; it's the longest running sitcom that FX has ever aired. It's also one of the most quotable media on the planet. It's a really easy binge once you start, the seasons just start flying by. I promise, if you can look the other way on some vulgarity, like Arrested Development, Archer, South Park, etc., it's some of the most fantastic TV out there.Hulu

04/07/2019 20:05:40PrpleightJohn DoeI’m going to quote an intro blurb from the Wikipedia page for the show because it describe the premise of the show so neatly. “I woke up in an island off the coast of Seattle. I didn't know how I got there ... or who I was. But I did seem to know everything else. There were things about me I didn't understand ... the brand, being colorblind, extreme claustrophobia. And while my gifts provided answers for others, I still search for my own. My name is John Doe.”

Each week John would receive a clue to his identity usually in the form of an item or person that appeared to him in full color. It was a great effect that always seemed to make me play closer attention when each episode started. When John wasn’t pulling at those threads he would use his special knowledge to help the police solve crimes that ranged from theft to murder.

The key to the success of this show was Dominic Purcell’s portrayal of John Doe. He seemed to have chemistry with everyone he shared the screen with. If you enjoy cop shows and intriguing mysteries, I strongly recommend this show. Be warned though, it is one of those shows that was canceled in the middle of a cliffhanger. /////take out 16

01/07/2019 20:16:00Folie-lexKids are Alright, TheThe Kids Are Alright is a semi autobiographical tale of show creator Tim Doyle’s life, of growing up in California in the 70s. Meet the Clearys an Irish Catholic family of 10. Stern Patriarch Mike and No-nonsense Matriarch Peggy run a tight ship in order to reign in the 8 boys they’re raising: Seminary-dropout-turned-socially-and-politically-conscious Lawrence, kind-hearted sweet Eddie, brown-nosing tattle-tale Frank, scheming Joey, bookworm Will, adorable little Pat and baby Andy… Oh! And Timmy, our narrator, who wants to be a “STAR”. Adding another dose of well-needed estrogen in the mix is Eddie’s girlfriend Wendi, a modern young girl of her time who fits in with this family seamlessly, striking up a friendship with Peggy and fearlessly standing up to Mike when need be. The era the show takes place in allows for some marvelous social commentary sure, and those things get addressed absolutely. But it’s this lovely loving family (even if they don’t always know how to show it), and their daily plights that really win you over. When the Clearys invite you in their home despite the fighting and the piles of laundry, you’ll never want to leave. The humour and heart make it all worthwhile.

Aspiring television writers out there looking for a role model to study for crafting unforgettable characters; sharp, witty dialogue; spot on plotting and pacing; and a compelling thrill ride of a story filled with gasp out loud twists and turn should study this show. From it’s very first episode, the brilliantly written and acted series took the model for psychological thrillers, threw it out the window and remolded the genre in its own unique image. At the core of this sexually charged, surprise you at every turn cat and mouse game between the complex and oft times puzzling MI6 agent, Eve Polastri , and the twisted and compelling assassin she chases, Villanelle, is the off the charts chemistry of the actresses who portray them. Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer give the performances of their careers playing these multi-layered characters who are as alike as they are different, and the show is never better than when these two acting powerhouses share the screen together.BBC America, AMC

29/06/2019 22:25:21ThenorthremembersLA finestWhile some call it a spin-off I found it more as a standalone series set in the Bad Boys universe. Syd Burnett from the second movie has left her job at the DEA in Miami now works for the LAPD as a detective with her new partner Nancy McKenna. Syd plays things fast and loose and gets with the times while McKenna is a traditional old fashioned by the book cop though polar opposites its for that reason they work well together half the time I was laughing at their banter which due to the chemistry of Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba as a fan of the buddy buddy trope I found it interesting it was played with two females for a change equally funny are the secondary detectives affectionately called the Benz as both are named Ben. The season long arc is of Syd working to find a criminal who left her for dead and why she left Miami while McKenna deals with her past coming back to haunt her unintentionally caused by Syd’s actions. After sampling it I enjoyed it more than I did as its much more serialized and character driven than typical cop showsSpectrum

29/06/2019 19:44:23AnnaLegacies It has something for everyone in it: romance, action, comedy, great characters, great story telling and an amazing cast. There’s also fun homages to old monster movies. If you have watched The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, this is a wonderful continuation of that universe. If you haven’t watched either of those shows, you can still enjoy Legacies on it’s own. Give it a chance and enjoy the fun, wild ride! Netflix, Amazon Prime and iTunes

01/07/2019 10:46:53LauraLoo77LimitlessPossibly the best one and done show of all time, Limitless masked itself behind "your typical CBS police procedural", but proved week after week that it had much more to offer. NZT-48 is a drug that allows you to access your full potential, and with that came a lot of crazy scenarios and situations. If you dropped the show after the pilot in fear that it was unoriginal and boring, it was NOT. This show cared deeply about how it presented its cases of the week. Whether through quirky animations or Brian's crazy NZT antics, the writers knew about the inherent stigma towards this genre and always strived to create a world beyond this, with an added bonus of awesome, serialized sci-fi mythology. It also featured a stunningly layered and complex villain, a thoroughly relatable protagonist, a soundtrack and score that always played the right songs in the right moments. If that's not enough, the two lead characters weren't involved in some forced romance. They remained friends and that friendship was excellent. This show knew how to have fun and serious, heartfelt moments. It was cancelled too soon, but fear not, it did not end on a cliffhanger.Netflix

30/06/2019 15:36:38MiloLine of DutyWho polices the police? Line of Duty’s AC-12, an elite anti-corruption unit do. The show is one of the most unpredictable crime dramas around, the most watched UK drama show of 2019 so far – and it’s best. Five seasons in, it’s the UK version of The Wire, with each serialised season telling its own story tackling a different suspect. Actors like Lennie James, Keeley Hawes, Thandie Newton and Stephen Graham play formidable opponents for AC-12 in their own right, as the show gives just as much depth to its villains as to its heroes.

Not afraid to explore the messy side of police corruption, Line of Duty has plenty of twists and turns, moving at an incredibly fast pace. You’ll never see the endings coming and you’ll always be on edge with nobody, not even the main characters themselves – above suspicion. If you liked Bodyguard, you’ll like this (only Line of Duty is even better) with talented showrunner Jed Mercurio proving his versatility across both shows. Its principal cast, played by Martin Compston, Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar, are portrayed as human, flawed, honest characters – and it really helps that extra factor of believability.

Little Drummer Girl, The
Adapted from the works of legendary espionage author John le Carré, known for masterpieces like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, The Little Drummer Girl is from the same AMC/BBC partnership that gave us the 2016 miniseries The Night Manager and stars A-List actors in the form of the brilliant Florence Pugh and Michael Shannon who put in Emmy-tier performances. 2018’s best limited series was beautifully shot with some stunning direction from original Oldboy and The Handmaiden director Park Chan-wook, and it really made the best out of its high concept premise.

Pugh’s Charlie, an idealistic actress, is pulled into the murky, late 70s world of espionage and international intrigue, dubbed the ‘theatre of the real’. We follow Charlie as the story turns into a thriller that is in parts both a romance – with the leading man played by Alexander Skarsgård - and high stakes spy drama, wonderfully paced with plenty of stellar moments. It helps that the show more than does justice to the excellent book, and stands on its own within a crowded field of le Carré adaptions, both for TV and film.

01/07/2019 11:23:56LauraLoo77LookingCraving a show as groundbreaking as Queer as Folk but were hoping they'd tone down the amount of explicit sex and add an actual plot? Gay characters that are all unique and layered? Beautifully intricate direction from Andrew Haigh, showcasing the best of his talents? Love stories that actually feel real? Gay actors playing gay characters, bringing an authenticity to a genre of shows that needed that? (There's also one of the most amazing female characters EVER on a show like this.) Welcome to Looking. This show is about the lives of a group of friends in San Francisco. The show was only two seasons long, but then we got a wrap-up movie which was satisfying to the core. But would I object to more of the show if I was offered? Absolutely not. These are characters set amongst scenery that sticks with you. It also featured philosophical dialogue coming from a group of characters you'd swear were as close as they appeared to be on screen. This is maybe the only show I'd ever call "ahead of its time". HBO viewers weren't ready for something like this. Give this one a chance if you have never seen it before.Hulu, HBO

05/07/2019 05:45:49LouLos EspookysLos Espookys is a Spanish language comedy currently airing on HBO and it is a strange one to describe. Four friends start a business where they provide horror experiences for people - in the first episode for example a Priest needs to fake an exorcism so hires the group to stage one. The tone and vibe of the show is quirky and strange - I think people who like the recent What We Do In The Shadows TV series will also dig this. HBO and HBO GO

04/07/2019 19:32:14Folie-lexMadam SecretaryEntering its 6th and final season next fall, Madam Secretary follows Elizabeth “Bess” McCord, the Secretary of State, a fair and idealistic woman whose goal is to genuine try and make the world a better place. What makes this show interesting is that while it fashions itself a “political drama” it manages to balance the international issues (with crises pulled from current headlines and an impressive roster of recurring actors playing all the foreign officials) and internal politics from dealing with the grumpy President’s Chief of Staff (the formidable Zeljko Ivanek) to all the other people in the capital whether friends or foes, with some great office shenanigans surrounding Bess’ own staff (an array of wonderful characters and actors) and lastly with what is one of the show’s strongest elements: Elizabeth’s loving home life and supportive family. If I have one criticism, the show does tend to showcase an idealized approach of US politics being the “be all end all” of morality and righteousness. However, what I do consider one of its strongest attributes, especially in the current political climate, it can also be rather critical of those very things in ways that other shows of genre haven’t been.

30/06/2019 16:24:18MiloMagicians, TheBelieve it or not, there is a fantasy show adapted from books that hasn’t had a disappointing season this year, and has managed to deliver emotional moments that were actually effective. Step right up, The Magicians, which bills itself as a hybrid of Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia. Once it moves away from its uneven first season it becomes something special, transforming into a show that knows exactly what it is and plays with the tropes of its genre. Best of all, it remembers to have fun, featuring musical numbers to songs like Under Pressure & Les Misérables’ One Day More. On top of this, it gave us its own fully-fledged musical episode that makes a case for the best of them all (4.10), turning character Margo Hanson (Summer Bishil) into an all-time genre-great.

The Magicians is the rare adaption that is better than its source material, boasting a diverse cast and pushing itself in new directions, switching between camp and seriousness effortlessly. With another season on the way, it’s the must for any fantasy fan mourning Game of Thrones and killing time before Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings & The Wheel of Time.

03/07/2019 17:31:53Ellys CartinMagnum PISummon a trendy TV priest to hear my confession. I used to be one of those people who called remakes or reboots "unnecessary," even if I hadn't seen the original. (Such a 2018 mindset.) CBS's new Magnum P.I. is the best new procedural in years. A big chunk of what makes it great is the dynamic among the main characters. Jay Hernandez is Thomas Magnum, a confident private eye concealing massive heartbreak. His friends Rick and TC served as Navy SEALs alongside him, and the three of them work through the fallout of time spent in captivity together. My favorite character though is Perdita Weeks's Juliet Higgins, a former MI6 agent whose banter and light antagonism with Magnum evolves into a very satisfying partnership. You'll certainly be entertained by the high-speed chases with helicopters and gorgeous Ferraris. Characters take running leaps across roofs. There's more than one incredible action sequence that will leave you fraught. However, the biggest reason to keep watching is the charming cast who form a band of buddies you will want to be part of.CBS All Access. New episodes available weekly on CBS.com when the season starts. Reruns airing Monday nights on CBS during the summer.

05/07/2019 19:16:04ThenorthremembersMalcolm in the middleOne of the staple TV comedies of the early 2000s that gave Bryan Cranston his start as an loveable goofball before he became the ruthless drug lord on Breaking Bad. The show centres around Malcolm a genius but almost socially incompetent boy the middle child of his struggling dysfunctional family consisting of his bully big brother his younger brother, his bossy hardass mother and his big hearted but overly emotional father. Malcolm goes about navigating the ups and downs of life as a child then a teenager and finally to a young adult ready for college. The main theme of the show is life is unfair but the struggles encourage you to keep going and its one of those few comedies that do not have an obnoxious laugh track so the humor is more realistic rather than forced.

01/07/2019 02:31:42Milo MJManhattanWGN America’s two season heir apparent to Mad Men took the race to create the first Atomic Bomb in the 1940s at the tail end of World War Two and made it a compelling, rich series that focuses on the lives and the characters behind its creation, mixing in real-life figures like Albert Eisenstein and Oppenheimer to the mix of an original cast of characters.

Cancelled after two seasons but still ending on a perfect note, Manhattan would have been the perfect fit at a larger network/streaming service like Hulu, Amazon AMC or HBO. Its stylish slow-burn of a narrative full of espionage, science, family drama and betrayal makes it a must-see from start to finish, backed up by a terrific ensemble featuring brilliant character actors like Harry Lloyd, Rachel Brosnahan, Katja Herbers, John Benjamin Hickey and more, grappling with the decision to invent a bomb that would go on to kill millions of people. Creator Sam Shaw has writing credits that include Castle Rock and Masters of Sex, and had planned to deal with the characters’ reactions to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but whilst we’ll never get to see that, what remains is commanding television.

Honestly watching this the show kind of fell flat mid way through but the last four episodes really picked up the pace of the overall mystery while the early episodes did well in showing how Michaela and Ben strived and struggled to find their place in this new post five year world reconnecting with their loved ones and just trying to makes sense of what their place was in a world that changed so much.

04/07/2019 16:47:13LauraLoo77Mind FudgeMind Fudge is a surrealist short-form comedy starring Justine Nelson in a dynamic performance playing a fictionalized version of herself. The show originally debuted as a series of (very) short Instagram skits and later became a fully fledged series, and sees Justine attempt to navigate life through all kinds of highs and lows. In each episode she will go through a sequence of events that will see her believe that she is in a different sort of media property, spanning across several genres, while still maintaing themes and scenes that are grounded in reality. Nelson is asked to do most of the heavy lifting, however the supporting cast are all excellent as well. The show also discusses important, relevant topics and situations, as Justine has to choose between living with her best friend and roommate of several years, or attempt to make a commitment with her new girlfriend. The dialogue is quick, funny, and relatable, with excellent direction from a cast and crew that is almost entirely female, and the show feels empowered in this way as a result. Each episode is incredibly short and goes down very smooth, akin to actual fudge, making this the perfect new binge.CBC Gem

05/07/2019 22:26:01Claire SerowinskiMurphy BrownCancelled after just one season into its comeback, Murphy Brown is the tv show that I needed and still do. Though its political nature is what I think turned many people off, it was handled so deftly by Executive Producer Diane English and her team that the politics became a character unto itself. It was unbelievably funny (loved seeing Murphy getting kicked out of the White House pressroom by sarah sanders) and the writing and chemistry between the original cast and the newbies (especially the actor portraying Murphy's son Avery) was stunning. Though I too like to escape the current political climate when I'm watching comedy, laughing at trump's expense was priceless. Tyne Daly was a great addition as Phil's sister Phyllis and the recreated sets of the original were spot on. I wish Murphy had gotten another season; 10 episodes was not enough. I think that they had so much more to tell...CBS and CBS All Access

03/07/2019 16:54:00Milo MJMy Brilliant FriendOne of the best shows of last year - and the best new show - was the Italian-American drama My Brilliant Friend, a story about a pair of friends growing up in a poor but vibrant neighbourhood in 1950s Naples. Based on an adaption from the brilliant book by Elene Ferrante, My Brilliant Friend emerged as a hit for HBO thanks to its strong portrayal of a lifelong female friendship on screen and the complexities that come with it.

Complete with a wonderfully woven Max Richter (The Leftovers) score and strong performances from the actors who play the two leads, Elena and Lila at different ages through their lives (Gia Girace, Ludovica Nasti, Margherita Mazzucco and Elisa Del Genio all do stellar jobs), My Brilliant Friend is a remarkably sincere drama that will have you captivated throughout and will stay with you long after you finish it. Season 2 is on the way and there isn't a better time to get started on this under-the-radar critically acclaimed hit.

29/06/2019 18:25:40ThenorthrememebersNCISBased on the real agency that investigates crimes involving the US Navy a character driven show with doses of humor cases of the week are the backbone but its strength is the colorful characters that have come and gone over the years the camaraderie is just so genuine you care more of seeing the characters interplay as much or even more than the crimes they solve. Characters like Gibbs a tough but tender leader Tony the effective laxed senior agent sassy former secret service agent Kate tech expert McGee goth forensic scientist Abby and chatty ME Ducky. Later additions include ruthless Israeli Ziva Director Shepherd who has a past with Gibbs the politically astute Vance the affable and passionate rookie Bishop deepcover operative Torres and war prisoner turned psychologist Sloan. Each character is memorable written in ways that make them human with their own unique oddities and quirks that make them relatable while they do fight crime at the core its a show about relationships life and the connections these characters have with one another. That fleshed out characterization sincere interaction and heart filled moments is the key reason why NCIS has lasted so long.
