Also 2 Mute Swans, 58 Greylags, 53 Canadas, 3 Wigeon, 5 Pochard (3 drakes), 5 Goldeneye, 3 Goosander, Kingfisher, 2 Willow Tits and the Twite still. Later adult Caspian and 1stW Yellow-l-Gulls in the roost.

19 January 20194 Whooper Swans, three skeins of Pinkfeet over; 75 SE, 27 low NW looking disoriented about five minutes later and c350 SE. Also 4 Pochard and the Twite. Later in the gull roost a 2ndW Caspian Gull.

20 January 2019Yesterday’s 4 Whooper Swans were joined by another 29 (with, bizarrely, a Black Swan) making 33 in total. Several skeins of Pinkfeet went through NW ; 82+c50+70+ a group heard only and a final flock of 44 that dropped in to feed with other geese in the field beside Ogston Hall drive. Also 6 Mandarins, 6 Pochard (3 drakes), 4 Goldeneye (1 drake), 8 Goosander, 42 GCGrebes and the Twite.

A walk behind the dam wall failed to produce the hoped for Dipper but the feeders were busy, highlights being 4 Siskins, 4 Tree Sparrows 2 Bramblings.

19 February 2019Another interesting day; 4 Mandarins, 17 Gadwall, pair of Pintail, 14 Tufteds, drake Pochard, 5 Goldeneye, 3 Goosander, a Red Kite S 1207-17, 4 Oystercatchers, a Curlew, 2 Woodcocks at dusk, a juv Iceland Gull in the roost, 2 Willow Tits and the Twite still present.

20 February 2019Pair of Pintail still, drake Pochard, 10 Tufteds, 2 Goldeneye, 4 Goosander, a Red Kite reported to me to the north of the recording area, 5 Oystercatchers, single Raven and the Twite still with the Linnet flock ranging up down the west bank, best looked for by scanning through them when they perch up. In the gull roost 2ndW Caspian 1stW Yellow-l-Gull with a juv Glaucous Gull that was constantly harassed by two Herring Gulls and may not have stayed. No sign of yesterday’s Iceland Gull.

21 February 2019An adult Iceland Gull in the roost had been at Poolsbrook earlier and looked like a Kumlien’s Gull, also the adult Glaucous/Herring Gull hybrid again. Additionally 12 Gadwall, 2 Pintail, 3 Goldeneye, 15 Goosander, 6 Little Grebes, 6 Oystercatchers, 327 Lapwings, a Curlew NW, a Woodcock, a Raven and 2 Kingfishers.

22 February 20192 Pintail still, 13 Gadwall, 10 Tufteds, 5 Goldeneye, 15 Goosander, 4 Oystercatchers, Curlew, 4 Woodcocks out of Carr Wood and the Twite with the Linnet flock. In the gull roost the adult Iceland (possibly Kumlien’s) Gull, 2ndW Glaucous Gull (the fifth ‘white -winger’ this week), ad Caspian Gull and ad Glaucous/Herring Gull hybrid.

23 February 2019<p style="padding-left: 30px">The Kumlien’s Gull arrived early and showed well at the south end of the reservoir before inexplicably heading off south with about ten other large gulls at 1645. The Glaucous/Herring hybrid roosted and earlier in the day the 2ndW Glaucous Gull lingered in the early morning mist. Also 3 Goldeneye, 2 Goosander, a Little Egret, 42+ GCGrebes, 4 Oystercatchers, a Curlew, a Little Owl, a dusk Barn Owl (with the usual evening calling Tawny Owls) and the Twite hanging on with the Linnets.

24 February 2019Another excellent gull roost with ad and 1stW Iceland Gull, 2ndW Glaucous Gull and the ad ‘Viking’ Gull. Also 44 Greylags, 26 Canada Geese, 41 Pinkfeet NW, 7 Gadwall, 6 Shoveler, 6 Goldeneye, 35 GCGrebes, 4 Oystercatchers, Little Owl 4 Yellowhammers on the Bridle Path.

1 March 20192 Mute Swans flew through, 2 Mandarins, drake Wigeon, 6 Goldeneye, 4 Goosander, 4 Oystercatchers, 5 Curlews late evening, 24 Common Snipe were flushed off the west bank by a Sparrowhawk hunting in low, quartering Harrier-like fashion, 2 Lesser Redpolls and the Twite still present with c130 Linnets. In the gull roost an ad Glaucous juv/1stW Iceland Gulls.

3 March 2019Ogston’s earliest ever Sand Martin flew through around 0900, the previous earliest record being on 9 March 2015. Also a drake Wigeon, 25 Gadwall (a good count for here), 6 Goldeneye, 8 Little Grebes, 4 Oystercatchers, 50 Lapwings, 2 Curlews and a Snipe. Challenging conditions for the gull roost with 1stW Caspian 2ndW Yellow-legged Gull of note.
