This document is freely provided as a benchmark to reach for Minimum Defensive Firearm Proficiency. Your goal, whether private citizen or other, is to achieve/surpass these marks as your skill baseline. Standards have been carefully crafted, reviewed, and even AI-analyzed as Healthy. (Challenging yet Attainable)
5
Don't get discouraged, get quality training! Embrace the journey and log your progress.
6
These drills can all be shot on IDPA targets- or any targets with 4" circle headzone and 8" circle chest zone.
7
A shot timer is needed for accurate recording. These devices begin timing after giving a start-beep and tell you exactly when every shot was taken and how much time was in between each shot. (split times)
8
The IDPA target and compiled drills here within are not created/owned by author- they are well-known and publicly utilized/recognized in various shooting communities. (with various time standards) There is history behind each drill compiled here, I implore you to briefly study each.
9
For calculating your current average (personal skill baseline), only include times achieved for successful drills done WITHOUT ANY misses/shots outside of circles. If shots are missed in a drill, the time is irrelevant. Focus on safety, efficiency, and accuracy before speed.
10
This document is best printed in landscape orientation.
11
Always remove your finger from the trigger when you've finished firing and place the firearm on safe and/or holster/sling after each drill.
12
Always follow range rules and check for restrictions forbidding certain drills or activities. (such as Bill Drills or drawing/firing from holster)
13
Once/if you achieve all times within the standards (for your context, whether from open or concealed carry) for pistol and/or AR15, send us a message at support@protectorinstinct.com! We want to hear and share your learning story.
14
OBEY SAFETY RULES AT ALL TIMES: Always treat every firearm as if it's loaded. Never point a firearm at anything/anyone you're not willing to destroy/shoot. Always keep your finger STRAIGHT and off the trigger until you've decided to shoot. Understand your target and what lies beyond.
15
