6/20/2020 16:04:57When Summer's in the MeadowChange of PaceFeatures clarinets in the lower register - very mello overall. Flutes get the melody at the end.Trumpets feature on melody. Euphs get the counter line in one section.Doesn't add that much, mostly metallic sounds (cymbals & wind chimes)Based off of Danny Boy - good teaching opportunity to show different interpretations. Uses different harmonic language than expected sometimes.6Bowles, Ashton

6/20/2020 16:06:24When Summer's in the MeadowChange of Pace, ContestNot very high range, intonation for flutes and clarinets.many moving lines. Ranges are not difficultCan be done with a relatively small percussion section. Keep kids focused, not hard or a ton of parts, but important to be played musically and well.phrasing & intonation will be difficult. This piece appears easy, but has a lot of moving parts and inner voices to be studied and taught to make it work well. 6Young, Mark

6/20/2020 16:06:27When Summer's in the MeadowChange of PaceReally works on warm sounds throughout. Not hard technically but a great piece to work on breathing and tuning. Can really work on Tone quality and breathing in low brass, sound like some important solos throughout. Not a percussion heavy piece but really has important parts that adds to the moments of the piece.Great piece to work on intonation, balance, and blend. Very tender piece to work on lyrical styles. Beautiful piece.7Fenske, John

6/20/2020 16:06:28When Summer's in the MeadowChange of Pace, ContestExposed sections will make intonation difficult, phrasing will also be a focus pointGreat horn melody/feature supplemented by saxes. Lots of mid-low brass countermelody gives them actual interesting parts in a lyrical pieceMostly atmospheric, tasteful but limited, can be spread out to multiple players stillBalance with melody/countermelody will be a big focus9Bays, Kevin

6/20/2020 16:06:29When Summer's in the MeadowContest, Noveltyclarinets get a melody they know with "Danny Boy" which could inspire some good listening examplestrumpets have the Danny Boy melody as well, bands with a weak horn section may struggle without strong chords and accompanimentpercussion is limited with bells and cymbals rising above the rest, this may cause an antsy percussion section but may also be good selection for a smaller or weaker sectionphrasing and sustain will be the biggest teaching focus for this piece for most ensembles9VanCura, Kelsi

6/20/2020 16:06:29When Summer's in the MeadowChange of PaceSecond clarinet parts are low, students will need knowledge of pinky notes and how to alternate pinkies. Clarinets are entirely below the break the entire piece. There is a beautiful trumpet solo with some countermelodies in the euphonium and trombones and horns. Other than those little features, the brass are low and long for most of this. The percussion writing is very very sparse in this piece. It would require some delicate playing and concentration from your percussionists - but I do think it's important to do pieces like this.
While this piece is really accessible from the perspective of notes and rhythms, the key of concert Db will be challenging for students when the key change comes. There are also some dissonant harmonies that students may shy away from at first, but it's great to expose them to! I love to use settings of familiar songs to expand my students ears with different harmonies and textures, this piece would be great for that.

6/20/2020 16:06:31When Summer's in the MeadowChange of PaceBalance as sections, and then as a woodwind choir. Endurance to hold out all sustained notes as even as possible for the entire piece. Balance, make sure not to cover up melody! Not a lot of parts, extra players can play mallet parts to keep them engaged. Air support at softer dynamics and intonation across the board. Finishing phrases. Key change at measure 45 8Mack, Regan

6/20/2020 16:06:32When Summer's in the MeadowChange of PaceStrong clarinet section to bring out the first theme with matching style, legato style that matches across the section, Trumpet needs to be dark, no significant range issues, legato styles need to be worked on, intonation in long chordal sections in the low brass as the chords are so interestingKnow your role. Counting rests and making sure all parts line up, this is crucialGreat study of well known melody with different styles, legato style and rubato style9Bruington, Andrew

6/20/2020 16:06:34When Summer's in the MeadowChange of PaceLovely flute writing, Danny boy in the low register of the clarinet, oboe/bell potential pitch problems.Horn/alto heavy from the beginning, fairly unison brass section writingA lot of one-note percussion writing, primarily a bell piece.Lots of long phrase lengths, with some challenging harmonic structures present. Probably should be rated higher than 1+3Von Sas, Erick

6/20/2020 16:06:37When Summer's in the MeadowChange of PaceUnison clarinet melody of Danny boy. Often times in throat tones. Very minimal flute and oboe part in the first half of the piece. Clarinets stay below the break. Lyrical playing throughout. Would be great to develop tone quality and dynamic playing. Perhaps not the most engaging part for low brass.Very minimal percussion parts throughout. Some tempo adjustments throughout (ritardando, slightly faster, etc.). Would be great to work on phrasing with a younger band. Unique reharmonizations of the melody throughout. 7Rexroat, Stevan

6/20/2020 16:06:57When Summer's in the MeadowChange of Pace, ContestClarinet melody of 'Oh Danny Boy' for a 1+ setting. Really great opportunity for a solid MS clarinet player who needs to shine.Beautiful brass melody after the clarinet. Wonderful countermelodies that need to be smooth. Nice use of auxiliary instruments. Wind chimes, suspended cymbals add a nice splash of color. An excellent young setting for "Oh Danny Boy" for MS band. A great piece that requires lots of legato style teaching. Staggered breathing, tone building and balance are key as well for the kids to learn using this piece.9Loomis, Benjamin

6/20/2020 16:07:01When Summer's in the MeadowChange of PaceClarinet has a very exposed melody at the beginning. Flute later gets the melody. Great piece for playing sustained and tuning. Would be great to work on having parts bring out countermelodies and moving lines. Pretty horn line in the beginning. Trumpet takes over the melody later on. Great piece for playing together in a sustained fashion. Low brass gets a cool chromatic line under the melody at times. Exposed bell part at the beginning underneath the clarinet melody. Very basic percussion parts. Bells have a very important part by playing the melody at times. Beautiful and flowing beginning. Moves into an exposed clarinet solo but more instrument join in with the melody. Interesting countermelodies for being a grade 1+ piece. Great lyrical piece for my band personally. 9Cottom, Kristen

6/20/2020 16:07:02When Summer's in the MeadowChange of PaceIntonation and breath support will be the biggest challenge for woodwindsThe brass will need to make sure they line up their chords correctly. The suspended cymbal and crash cymbal part will be the hardest part and most vital. 6/20/2020 16:07:02When Summer's in the MeadowChange of Pace, lyrical danny boyMake sure all the fingers are moving together at the same time. intonation in the clarinet unisons. oboe up to high a. Otherwise ranges seem good. check Db's in flutes for intonation. Ranges are good, horn is important but in unison so they could gain confidence there (also generally double in the alto). harmonies that aren't too thick. gb in the low brass--start em early! the small percussion parts are crucial solos. good for learning sus rolls. The whole section really needs to be able to count rests and understand how their part fits into things overall. Anything cantabile can be a great teaching tool for musicality. Key change is impactful but not too many flats. good teaching tool for musical breaths. 10Arnold, Seth

6/20/2020 16:07:04When Summer's in the MeadowChange of PaceDifficulty and strength: ww in lower register. Easy to play, hard to hear with full group.Strength: easy range for brass, great time for lyrical parts.Difficulty: only real challenge would be the key signature for a young group.Difficulty: mostly pitched percussion, boring parts at times.Difficulties: Four flats(not hard just unusual), 8Stearns, Robert

6/20/2020 16:07:07When Summer's in the MeadowContest, Recognizable melodyBeautiful section highlighting the clarinet with the old Danny Boy melody. Long sustained notes keep this song connected and are very important. Percussion assist the wind melody in this piece. The triangle part may be simple but adds a lot of texture. This pieces has a recognizable melody that many people know and enjoy. The challenge that comes with playing a slow beautiful piece is keeping intonation centered and phrasing connected. 10Schroeder, Jenna

6/20/2020 16:07:07When Summer's in the MeadowChange of Pace, Contest, slow lyrical songgreat clarinet feature, great for teaching flute vibrato. Tricky for intonation with flute after long phrases- great time to work on pitch not droppingbrass has some really cool chord changes. not alot of interesting material for them thoughnot a lot going on for percussion if you have a bigger section. great for teaching rolls. great for teaching lyrical playing, blend, singing through your instrument 9Enjaian, Meredith

6/20/2020 16:07:08When Summer's in the MeadowChange of Pace, Contest
The clarinets state "Oh Danny Boy" in unison toward the beginning of the piece - intonation here may get tricky. Flutes finish the melody line in their middle/low register which can cause some significant intonation problems. They won't be overwhelming but they will likely be flat.
Very lovely brass choir at the beginning with melody in horns (?) The low brass get to sink their teeth into some Granger-esque quarter note cords. The horns don't get much of break throughout this piece - rarely on the melody but great counter melodies and accompanying lines. Need endurance
Wind chimes are a lovely effect for O Danny Boy. Nice eighth notes in the bell part at the end - would need to handle it very delicately. The chorale writing is gorgeous - can get tricky to tune, balance and shape. Sus Cymbal and crash help the drama at the climax of the piece before it speeds up slighty. I would spend a lot of time on tone, balance and blend with this chart - it is ripe with opportunity to develop that.8Garvin, Katherine

6/20/2020 16:07:11When Summer's in the MeadowChange of Pace, BalladGreat piece to get some players on solos/ solis.Long sustained notes in low brass/ low ww will require good breath control. Great piece to get some players playing solos/ solis. The parts are not super engaged, but each independent part requires the students to be ready to play Really nice piece to get young players used to playing in exposed, thin textures.6Tamondong, Corey

6/20/2020 16:07:16When Summer's in the MeadowContestClarinets state Danny Boy after a brief introduction, in unison - very exposed, and beautiful.

Predominant Horn melody in the introduction.Glockenspiel part is exposed and accompanies unison clarinet melody in exposition.Beautiful scoring for entire ensemble in Ab major.7Hoesing, Phillip

6/20/2020 16:07:19When Summer's in the MeadowChange of PaceGreat to offer melody section to your clarinet players. However, each section gets a feature at least once. There are some really nice supporting roles in the woodwinds to the melody lines. The french horn players get some really nice melodic lines and you would definitely want to make sure you have strong horn players. Some beautiful melodic features in the trumpet. The ranges seem very reasonable. As this is a ballad, the percussion is minimal but the suspended and crash cymbal really make the big moments special. The bells highlight the melody parts. I love how it has melody features from "Danny Boy". Great opportunities to teach phrasing, breathing, and balance and blend. 9Wright, Nicole

6/20/2020 16:07:25When Summer's in the Meadow
Change of Pace, Contest, A great piece that could showcase the tenderness of your band. The notes and rhythms aren't hard, so they can focus more on style, tone, and intonation.
Beautiful clarinet soli but intonation could be difficult then
Some chromatic descending lines
Exposed lower flute part
Only 2 trumpet parts and one horn part
Low brass has many sustained long notes, which gives them tune to really focus in on the tuning
Percussion isn't used a ton. It's mostly dynamic swells and sometimes the melody on the glockenspiel.
It'll tell you which mallets to use at different parts
Great opportunity to focus on dynamic swells
It's a piece that looks easy, but that's deceiving. In order to pull it off, you really need solid intonation throughout the group
Beautiful setting of a well known folk song
Bb Major is friendly key to start in

6/20/2020 16:07:27When Summer's in the MeadowContestPiece gives the clarinets a time to really shine. Strength: 2nd clarinet part appears to stay under the break. Flute range is very attainable. The piece is not demanding in range for the trumpets or any of the brass. Limited mallet percussion available. Orchestra bells cannot be doubled in other mallet instruments as it would alter tone quality too much and over ride the ensemble. This piece is very attainable for high school level musicians. Requires discipline with all of the slow sustained playing. 8Lubbers, Jacob

6/20/2020 16:07:29When Summer's in the MeadowChange of Pace- Great Clarinet feature for the melody
- Mainly simple rhythms, work out phrasing, and breathing a lot in this piece
- Interesting harmonies and non-diatonic chord tones to play
- Can have simple/ inactive parts in the inner voices for woodwinds not feartured
- Trumpet feature for the melody
- Nice low brass feature
- Trick low brass harmony/ balance
- Percussion stays active throughout almost the whole beginning
- Prominent bells part
-Great use of cymbals, auxillary percussion, and timpani
- Reminds me of a lot of other ballads I've listened to at this level based on it's harmony, arrangement, etc.
- Some non-diatonic harmony to work with, could lead to some intonation work
- Interesting arrangement overall, puts a twist on a traditional song and can keep players engaged and on their toes while performing

6/20/2020 16:07:32When Summer's in the MeadowChange of PacePlenty of opportunity for intonation building as well as dynamics. Easy to overplay a lot of these sections. As ww. Plenty of opportunity for intonation building as well as dynamics. Easy to overplay a lot of these sections. Nice piece to build confidence on sustained high-ish notes (D5 for trumpet)Some fun dramatic percussion - not necessarily predictable auxiliary parts, but very predictable cymbals/bass swells. Nice writing for a lyrical percussion piece, but players could get bored in rehearsal.Lyrical piece - all the challenges that come with that (extra focus on intonation and phrasing, dynamics)8Wallace, Garrett

6/20/2020 16:07:40When Summer's in the MeadowChange of PaceNice texture with first statement of the melody as unaccompanied clarinet soliHorn part often cued in alto sax; trumpets still play for most of the piece, unlike in some other lyrical selections.Still 5-6 parts despite being a lyrical selection to give most players something to do.Sudden deceptive key change to A-flat major; few if any range concerns7Paulus, Jordan

6/20/2020 16:07:40When Summer's in the MeadowChange of Pace, ContestThin at times, but very simple parts written well. Not very exciting, but breathe support will be a challenge.Very little contribution. Bells and suspended cymbal mainly.I could see this being a great advanced middle school piece, but deceivingly difficult to do at a high level because of the maturity needed.5Ferrell, Trey

6/20/2020 16:07:40When Summer's in the MeadowChange of PaceClarinet solo at the beginning, a lot of delicate woodwind writing. If you have great soloists, this wold be a great piece. If you have a strong brass section, they have some great soli moments without having to play solos. Percussion is not very active, possibly double some flute or oboe parts on mallet instruments. A lot of musical ideas start with one section, but finish in another. Making sure all of those parts will be connected. A great opportunity for some more chamber ensemble type of playing with the entire band. 7Chambless, Michael

6/20/2020 16:07:49When Summer's in the MeadowChange of Pacetrue dynamics contrast in the repeated notes to get the full effect may be difficultI love that most of the brass gets to play the melody, style could be difficultpercussion must be precise and on point, there part is very delicate and placed in just the right spotsEnsemble will struggle with dynamic contrasts, especially so quickly, but it is also a good way for them to develop this technique too, key change for a middle school group could prove some difficulty, great for working legato style8Hillis, Aleesha

6/20/2020 16:07:50When Summer's in the MeadowChange of PaceWould be good for woodwinds in developing balancing a blend and listening for moving linesThe range is very limited for this piece, which is good for my Symphonic Band next year. The percussion is mostly for texture and expression and certain hits and swells along the wayEach sections gets the melody

Would need to work a lot on phrasing to make this piece sing

6/20/2020 16:07:57When Summer's in the MeadowChange of Pace, ContestVery nice clarinet soli! Woodwinds I can barely hear you because of low brass. What I do hear is nice. Brass is too loud at start. Good sound though. Reintroduction of low brass should be softer and have room to grow. The sound of the brass ensemble is great. I’d work softer moments. Tubas need to back off at last note. Strong section. Need dynamic work. Percussion help the big moment happen during cresendos. Nice windchimes. Balance needs work. Strong brass throughout! 8Rodriguez, Jose

6/20/2020 16:08:02When Summer's in the MeadowChange of Pace, ContestNice Danny boy melody in clarinet section - exposed and needs a strong and confident section

Some nice moving low brass lines at the end - mostly long chordal progressions before though

Trumpet and horn melodies are well written

6/20/2020 16:08:21When Summer's in the MeadowChange of Pace, Contest8th notes in flute/clarinet will tend to rush at a slow tempo. The piece is soft in general so playing at that volume will take some practice. Not very many percussion parts but they are exposed. Very nice piece and great variation of this theme. Timing in sustained notes and chords can pose issues initially but this is a great piece to work on that musical element. 9Samson, Eric
54
6/20/2020 16:08:21When Summer's in the MeadowChange of PaceBeautiful opportunity for the clarinet family at m. 10. Balance and phrasing will definitely be teachable opportunities. Not too high for brass. If you have a decent sound but not a ton of range, it would be good for you.A great piece to stress the importance of ALL percussion instruments, and how color may affect a mood. Also, gives a teacher the opportunity to teach or reteach proper technique on aux perc.Although starting in a very comfortable key, it adds two flats which may produce a few intonation issues due to pitch tendencies.

Exposed passages will require confidence from the players after the intro.

What a great piece to work on phrasing and dynamics!

6/20/2020 16:08:37When Summer's in the MeadowChange of Pace, ContestClarinets get to play the beautiful Danny Boy theme in the beginning. The flute range goes up to a D6. The key changes from Concert Bb to Concert Ab. There are many tempo changes, so the band will need to watch the conductor. Balance, phrasing, dynamics, intonation, and the cantabile style will need to be worked on. 10DiMento, Jenna

6/20/2020 16:08:38When Summer's in the MeadowChange of PaceNot technically challenging, good for teaching phrasing.Trumpet soli at measure 27.

6/20/2020 16:09:07When Summer's in the MeadowChange of PaceTerrific scalar 8th note passages in this piece in unison. Writing is done in a way that allows for the oboe to be heard. The brass writing is mostly chordal for low brass, but trumpets and horns have beautiful soaring melodies in TERRIFIC ranges. Nothing seems too difficult.
This is pretty standard middle school band lyrical piece writing. Some mallet parts doubling melodic lines with a lot of suspended cymbal to fill in the gaps. Good to developing your players' touch and attention to detail with auxiliary.
This is a great piece for an advanced 7th grade or 8th grade band with good concepts of tone quality and pitch control. A moving and beautiful piece.8Gresham, Adam Gresham

6/20/2020 16:09:24When Summer's in the Meadowlyrical selectionClarinet parts are lower-only 2- would be good for a younger band, only 1 flute-oboe part, range is lower which will help with intonationimportant horn parts that double with the alto saxophone part, trumpet and low brass parts are also lower in range which is helpful for a younger band-7th grade band, Percussion parts are very light and help ensemble mainly with dynamics and impact momentsIn Bb concert-great for a younger band, the tempo is faster for a lyrical style piece which would be good for a younger group performing their first piece in this style, lots of opportunity for expression10Chambless, Matthew
