the Bell Laboratories internal telephone directory. However, the author
wishes to thank Drs. S. A. Burr, M. P. Epstein, J. C. Hsu, L. L. MacDougall,
R. Sherman and P. P. Wang for their efforts in reading the manuscript and
making many suggestions.
There are two people to whom the author is particularly grateful for the
