Purpose: Washington State LASER’s primary purpose is to provide leadership assistance in science education to districts and educators. For more information about Washington State LASER please visit http://wastatelaser.org. Washington State LASER has curated a comprehensive set of research-based district-level indicators of healthy, equitable science/STEM learning systems to better understand and support districts in science/STEM planning and implementation.

The self-assessment will:
1) provide district leaders with a contemporary framework to drive impact in science/STEM education
2) lay the foundation for district strategic planning efforts and collaboration within and across LASER Alliance regions, and
3) illuminate successes and gaps that drive leadership capacity development within and beyond LASER.

Structure: On the "Self-Assessment" tab below, you'll find the six pillars of the LASER model with corresponding indicators for each pillar in Column A. Column B is for indicating whether or not a plan or action for a specific indicator is present in your school or district. Column C is a place to capture any additional information about the indicator in that row (e.g. if it's present, to what extent is the implementation effective?, how can the school/district grow in this area?, etc.)

How to use this tool: Dialogue amongst multiple stakeholders is encouraged as part of completing the self-assessment. It is often the case that different people in the school/district/community hold information or perspective that should be included in order to best represent the current status of science/STEM education. Note that this is not a rubric--achieving equitable outcomes for students cannot be reduced to a checklist and is always a work in progress. The self-assessment is meant to draw attention to areas that need attention--either as promising practices or areas for growth.

After completing the self-assessment, teams are encouraged to begin addressing priority indicators with a strategic plan. The LASER STEM Strategic Plan template is designed for this work, or teams may choose to incorporate their findings from the self-assessment into another planning process (e.g. school improvement plans, overall school/district strategic plan, etc.)
