#1: HydrationDehydration
Rehydration
Electrolytes: minerals that support hydration >> energy
Minerals
- Dried mango, jerky, Gatordate Zero packets
- Seed pellets & seeds
- Make/taste electrolyte-rich drinks (ex: coconut water, smoothies, watermelon water, Gatordae Zero) - Research foods that have electrolytes (potassium, claclium, sodium...) and inform the kumu what the best snacks are for huaka'i days (ex: bananas, pretzels, mango) -Discussed the PH levels of food we consume. -Students log the foods they eat & their PH levels.

#2: Ahupua'aMoku
Ahupua'a
Lualualei Vertisol
Nutrients
- Oahu soil map
- Wai'anae Moku map
-
- Research meaning of our street names
- Read through Sites of Oahu text (pdf) to find some mo'olelo related to the Wai'anae Moku
- Dryland forests

#3: Soil tesitngpH
Phosphorus
Potassium
Nitrogen
Organic material
Sand, silt, clay
- Protocol: Name, Moku, Ahupua'a >> Oli (to continue weekly)
- In what way are electrolytes related to the soil?
-
-
- 3 soil kits
- 3-5 mason jars
- Ziploc bags or cups for soil sample
- Water
- Dryerase board of chart paper to record data
- Soil samples from other Wai'anae ahupua'a (from Kumu) and/or moku (from Tammy & Terra)
- Bananas
- Look at the soil samples in the classroom to note the separation of minerals and difference across the samples. What does this tell us? What about the data collected over the two days -- how does that inform what we are SEEING?
- Create a brief report of inferences/suggestions based on the soil data to share with Chrisitan, Travis, and Kane.
- Learn more about elements we have been discussing and make connection to help remember. (Ex: potassium is in bananas)
-NPK Why is it important? What does it mean?
-Identifying possible deficiencies of NPK in crops.
-Crops & their preferred ph levels

#4: So, what IS turmeric? Root vegetable

Vegetables are usually classified on the basis of the part of the plant that is used for food. (root, stem, flower/head)

Because root vegetables grow underground, they absorb a great amount of nutrients from the soil.**. So are they good or bad for the soil? After growing root vegetables in a field, should you change it to something else? (Kane & Travis share)
- Protocol: Name, Moku, Ahupua'a >> Oli (to continue weekly)
- Try a turmeric drink (Lyman making)
- Snack: Celery (stem vegetable) and PB (source of protein + phosphate & magnesium -- electrolytes)
**Check for peanut allergies**
- Celery is made of 90+% water. What other fruits/veggies might have lots of water, minerals, and be good with PB? (apples, carrots)

- Hawaiian name: olena (yellow)
- What is turmeric/olena: fruit, vegetable, something else? ROOT VEGETABLE
- Diagram: root, stem, head/flower and label - olena, carrot, celery
- What might be some other root vegetables? Growing at KOF? (EX: yams, beets, parsnips, turnips, carrots, onions, garlic, daikon, turmeric, radish, ginger) (Kane & Travis share)

- Celery, PB cups
- White board or chart paper, markers
- Turmeric tie dye cotton masks and totes
Use Shibori method to tie in Geometry concepts with dye making.
Benefits of Natural dye vs Synthetic

- Find out the benefits of turmeric and recipes to try
- Reconnect PH level of Tumeric, Why cooking with Tumeric?

#5 A: So, what IS turmeric? (continued)Antioxidant
Anti-inflammatory
Olena
- Start at Food Hub (main farm): talk with Saleh about benefits of turmeric and capsule form, how he makes the capsules, how much he sells them for, etc. (If time/possible: visit cafe to look at/talk with Robert about recipes that use turmeric)Cooking with Roots & Stems -- @ Hoa Aina/virtually with Aunty Terri

#6: A hui hou!Review Game: how many roots vegetables, minerals, electrolytes, dehydration, rehydration, turmeric/olena,- Can you guess what's in these "farm to table" brownies? (Hints: vegetable, nice color, root vegetable, grows at KOF)
A: Beets! They are sweet, so can be used to replace sugar.
- Closing Circle: Appreciation, Apology, or Ah-ha (Continue a 2nd or 3rd round as needed).
- When leaving Kuwale: Oli Mahalo(?) Kane & Travis
