4/5/2021 1:24:56NaomiMichaelnmichael@mit.edu2-2022
I’m Naomi, a junior studying Course 2A-Product Development (mechanical engineerings with a concentration in product development). I was born in Asmara, Eritrea, grew up in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and have spent most of my time since March 2020 between Dallas, TX and Boston, MA. At MIT, I'm involved in the UA (MIT's student government), Camp Kesem, the MIT Consulting Group, and many other student organizations. In my free time, I enjoy baking, exploring Boston, and traveling.
I worked at many small businesses during my time in high school which contributed to my early fascination with entrepreneurship. I hope to one day have my own business, but the logistics of actually funding and operating this sort of enterprise often feels daunting. I hope that this class will help demystify the process of funding a new venture and help me gain confidence in my ability to become a successful entrepreneur.
Recently, I was a youth services intern at Canopy NWA, a refugee resettlement agency in my hometown. I had worked with this organization throughout high school tutoring refugee students, and my internship was focused on improving student-teacher relations as it relates to refugee youth. Over the semester, I independently researched, wrote, and shared a teacher resource book for teachers of refugee students. Canopy NWA now uses this book to help local educators understand the unique challenges faced by refugee youth and how they can help these students thrive.
Total newbie and eager to learn
I have taken some finance classes that may be relevant to this course (though I am not an expert in this area), and I have some experience with management consulting. Additionally, I am very interested in the legal side of this class. Currently I am taking a constitutional history course, and—while that may not be directly relevant to the material in MfS— it is something I find particularly fascinating. Moreover, I enjoy writing about legal topics which may be helpful as we draft materials for our lawyer and VC meetings.

My name is Allison Pinto and I am a Course 2A-Product Design major with a minor in 15-1. Outside of classes, I am an athlete on MIT's women's lacrosse team and I am also very involved with Camp Kesem. I like to think of myself as someone who is creative and hardworking and always looking to learn! I'm excited to be taking this class with all of you!
I want to learn more about the start-up environment and investing, especially as I am starting a job in consulting this summer. I am also really interested in how we can improve the start-up environment so more women and minorities enter the space. I think this class will be an amazing learning opportunity, so I am very excited to be a part of it!
For one of my summer internships, I worked for a non-profit startup called the Okoa Project, which builds ambulance trailers for areas of Africa with limited access to healthcare. I helped them improve their ambulance design and got to travel to Tanzania and meet the people in the community we were helping! I wasn't privy to a lot of the financial information as an intern, but what I did learn was so interesting! I also loved the work and the people!

I would like to contribute my experiences from working on a start-up and some of my project management skills!

I will be in Michigan until April 20th and then in Cambridge for the rest of the semester.

I am a senior in studying robotics and mechanical engineering with a special interest in entrepreneurship. I am currently in the early stages of developing my own startup and am excited to learn all I can through this class to take with me in my endeavors.
I would like to learn more about the basics of funding a startup as well as gain experience with lawyers and VC. As a woman I am already at a disadvantage with making connections in entrepreneurship, so this class can help me get a leg up and be better prepared (as well as get to learn from two really cool femal entrepreneurs)
Last semester my 2.009 team built a business around our own hurricane relief raft and were able to build a working final prototype (that we later took onto the Charles)
