Instructions: Make a copy of the spreadsheet so that you can edit.

Fill out the white fields. You'll need to edit most of them to get accurate results for your specific income level, location, and available healthcare plans. Greyed out and colored fields are either fixed or automatically calculated and should not be edited directly.

Federal Tax Rate: Your marginal federal income tax rate(current tax bracket).

State Tax Rate: Your marginal state income tax rate. Note that not all states allow the income tax deduction for HSA contributions. Put 0% if you live in California, Alabama or New Jersey, or if you live in a state with no income tax.

FICA Tax Rate: 7.65% for most people making pre-tax contributions through their employer. Different rates may apply at higher income levels. Set to 0% if you are making post-tax contributions to your HSA.

Monthly(not per-paycheck!) Premium, Deductible, Co-insurance and out-of-pocket max should all be readily available information about your health insurance plans.

Employer Contribution: Some employers make either fixed or matching contributions to your HSA. Set to $0 if your employer does not.

Employee Contributions: The total amount of HSA contributions you plan to make throughout the year. Note: Combined Employer/Employee contributions are capped at $3450/$6900 for 2018.

Limitations:

This spreadsheet compares the effective cost of healthcare expenses which are subject to the deductible. Some plans instead use a co-pay for certain expenses such as doctor visits or pharmaceuticals which are not accounted for in this spreadsheet.
