It was a very valuable experience and one of the things that I liked best about this campus and about this college as a whole were the people that I met here and have continued to, in many cases, keep up with over the many years since that time.

I’d made, like, such a connection with the rest of the Student Government that the first meeting spring semester, when I had to officially resign and turn it over to the Vice President, then they made a motion and voted me King for Life of the Student Government. So, I’ve always been amused by that.

We broke into the library at night, and- which was very easy to do then - and the Development Office was in the basement of the library. We went down there to find a list of the big donors, of the big alumni donors, with the idea that we had all these people that were working on this, who were working together on a plan, and that we would send this plan, and somebody would generously come forward with the money for this worthy cause and fund the radio station.

He was my faculty advisor, who at one point accused me of majoring in revolution since I had a strong interest in left-wing politics and the history of revolutions.

I met him over there, and again he was being very, sort of cagey, kind of not committing, you know? And he teed up a ball for me and I took a swing and he paused and looked at me and said, “Will you marry me?”

The coaching staff here at Grinnell understood student athletes like that and understood the new need to recruit them, which I thought was a phenomenal experience. It was great to get invited to campus, to be invited to stay with current members of the team that I was looking at and really get a taste of the experience here.

It seems like anywhere that’s centered around an academic place is gonna have a lot of Grinnell people ‘cause that’s where we go. But, it’s- so yeah, totally feels like home and now coming back it’s like, I realize it’s been so long. It's like everything is very familiar and yet totally alien.

The same people who could be wild and crazy, y'know, up 'til three o'clock in the morning doing all kinds of stupid things, would go into class the next day and have these really thoughtful discussions with their professors about all kinds of issues.

It’s the way that the community is structured and the smallness of it, which is something I keep coming back to as part of.. is one of Grinnell’s great virtues. It enables these kind of events to just pervade every aspect and you have that ability to kind of have something that impacts everybody even though it’s all very local.

I think about kind of the extra-curricular and the curricular, the academic and the volunteer, having those- all those parts kind of woven together to make a whole that impacted me the rest of my life.

It was fun having the resource of a college radio station that actually got records from record companies around the country and around the world, and being able to listen to new music that I might not otherwise have found or heard of and check that out.

Apparently what happened was, in the middle of his speech, presentation, several Grinnell students, I remember it was four or five, had taken all their clothes off as a protest against Playboy’s exploitation of women.

It has not bothered me, during my life, to be in uncomfortable situations and to be out of my comfort zone. I’ve actually found it very stimulating and use it as a time to redirect myself and say, “There must be something here that I need to rethink,” instead of, “Oh dear, I need to go back to where I am more comfortable.”

Getting to know people in town and getting to see the town of Grinnell, independent of the college and riding my bike in the middle of the night and riding in the corn fields- in the roads with cornfields on either side at dusk with fireflies, are really important memories for me.

The students, it seems... I don’t know. When I was there, I always like to think of this one description, every class non-conformist in the country applied and got into Grinnell, and that’s where they found their home.

I heard somebody say, “I don’t know if today I would be able to get into Grinnell.” But, at the time I was there, one of the things I noticed when I first came, we were all, in high school, used to being at the top of our class and you come to a college where everybody’s really bright, and that takes a little bit of adjustment, not to be automatically the best.

I particularly remember that feeling of almost social liberation in terms of being able to enjoy relationships with peers, to be in such a non-restrictive environment and to be able to explore so much.

It’s funny because when he and I talk about Grinnell, we have the same stories about the same places and the same experiences, even though our time here was split by 14 years. When he says that as a freshman he lived on Norris 4th, I know what that means. And when we talk about different parties and different places on campus, it’s the same. And he and I even know people in common who were classmates of his that then stayed on at the college or whatever- professors we had in common, that kind of thing.

Well, I was a first generation college student so I didn’t know exactly what to expect of college, and the one thing that really convinced me to come here to Grinnell was the very supportive staff, the supportive people. I actually came also to play football, and the coaches, and the way they approach you was very, very impressive. It was more like family, and to sit and have a call from the coach, and talking about how it is to live here, and also from the recruiters was amazing.

Because of being on a number of student government committees and a variety of committees and he was a professor that was on those committees I got to know him. By the time I was a senior even though I’d never had a class with him, he and I were good friends. So, in a sense, he had an influence on me and I think that’s one of the real unique things about Grinnell or any small liberal arts school really for that matter. You don’t know just the professors you have in class, but you know the professors that are making up the rest of the staff and that’s quite important, I think.

At one point I remember looking up and four or five people all.. we all looked at each other like, "I’m cranky. I’m sick and tired. I’m not getting enough sleep. I have way too much to do," and we all just had that moment of.. solidarity, I guess, is the best way to describe it.

I was like, “Oh, it’s in Iowa? Mm.” and I threw it all away. I threw all of it away. I was like, 'I’m not moving to Iowa; I’m from New Jersey, and nah nah nah.' And then they sent this letter out and it, I wanna know who in the admissions office decided to do this ‘cause it was brilliant for those of us who are socially awkward. Where they sent this and like- “Maybe you lost our first mailing, or maybe you’re just so busy you didn’t have a chance to respond, but we really wanted to hear back,” and you know, I was like, [Gasps]. I felt so guilt-ridden that I wrote back.

My acceptance packet from Grinnell arrived, and it was like, “Yay! We’re so excited! We really hope you’ll join us! We love you!” And there’s like tons of exclamation points, and like, at the very end it was like, “P.S. You need to fill out this health form,” but it wasn’t like in the first sentence. And I just- at that moment I knew that like, Grinnell, with this like, just welcoming, inclusive atmosphere, and like, all that- I just knew this was the place I wanted to be.

So many people- I live in Chicago right now which is a huge concentration of Grinnellians, and other people who I know, they’re all like, “Oh are you guys talking about plans again?” Or, they’ll say things like, “Ugh, another Grinnellian who's helping you with something? Ah! Why are there so many of you?” It's like, there aren’t so many of us. We just find each other and are willing to help each other. Like, if you call up a Grinnellian you’re like, “Oh by the way, do you know anything about this?” and they’re always willing-

When I was graduating, and going up to Minneapolis, I wasn't sure what I was gonna do. But- when I went up to Minneapolis I knew one person and I wasn't sure what I was gonna do, and he said to me, "When you go to Minneapolis," paraphrasing, "if you need to flip burgers, go flip burgers," you know, "and just take care of your life in that way." And not- he's always been a big supporter of mine and very encouraging and he has changed my life.

Talked with Robert Sauers, the director of admissions, and I asked him, I said, “Y’know, you send out invitations to quite a few more students than you have places for." And I said, "What happens if more students accept your invitation than you expect?” He said, “Well, then the director of admissions has made a terrible mistake and it’s up to the rest of the faculty to work it out.” So I thought that was pretty good too. He had a sense of humor.

We had an ice storm in Grinnell when I was here. I don’t remember what year it was but I remember, after the ice storm, walking through town and it was just.. It was like being in a wonderland, because the sun was... All the trees were covered in ice and the sun was just glinting off all the ice and that was just... It was like twinkling trees without lights on them. It was very very cool.

I showed up at the airport, I was seventeen. I had never really flown before. I show up at the airport, and I get on the bus, the shuttle, and there’s some Iowans that were pointing out things in Des Moines as we’re driving through on our way to the I-80. I made the mistake of saying, “Wow, what a quaint little town.” It’s the capital of Iowa. They were a little taken aback, but I was used to Philadelphia, used to.. So, as we’re driving I-80 the corn was interrupted occasionally by pigs. I was like, “What in the world did I just do?” And, the rest, as they say, is history.

The other thing I would say in terms of the history in terms of my years, is that - and it continues and maybe even got better - is that the science education is really very fine here, I think. So, in terms of what’s available and the involvement of students in research, which I was able to be involved in, so that was an important component of it as well.

I was a DJ, if you will, at the Grinnell radio station, which was only a few watts, although there was some, maybe urban legend that somehow, some clever student figured out how to use the railway tracks running through campus as an antenna and expanded the broadcast range of the radio station.

When I look at the higher educational universe I think that small liberal arts colleges including Grinnell, of course, are very well equipped for the maturation of young people.

I think that as I’ve gotten older the value of my Grinnell experience has only grown even more. I think the first years I got outta here I didn’t- I don’t think I really understood exactly what had happened to me here in terms of what it had really done to transform me. But as the years have gone by I actually use, and am aware of that experience a lot more. It’s actually planted kind of a seed in me, and it’s just sort of grown into this whole thing and I always go back to the Grinnell experience, to the start of it.

I got here and Alex had a live chicken in his room that he was raising, maybe for a Biology project. I don’t know. But he spent a lot of time trying to teach the chicken to speak the name of another guy in the residence hall who he was sort of having a- something of a conflict with. So, I know enough, I may be a city kid, but I knew enough that you cannot teach chickens to talk.

And the nicest thing about Grinnell, when you go downtown, is that it’s still there. The shops are there, and there’s been turnover of course, but they’re not- you don’t have a whole row of empty storefronts.

We stood next to the garbage cans in the Main Hall dining hall and we would take food off the people’s plates before they threw it away because we were making some grand statement about how much waste food was, which was really funny. So, we did that for about two weeks and then the college came to us and asked us very politely if we would stop because it was a health code violation. Or at least, that’s what they said, so we stopped that, but, y'know, we kind of made a point.

I felt the last ten years, like all of my worries, all my- everything just sort of melt away and I was just so relaxed and I think that’s been my... the most remarkable thing to me about this weekend: coming back and sort of remembering that feeling of knowing that I was in a safe place, that I could walk around with a beer, as silly as it is. But I don’t have to worry. I could just be myself. I could be here. I could be very much in the moment and it was OK. And that feeling returning is really nice, and it’s a neat memory for me to remember that feeling of having that place for four years.

Students were very free to create the experience that they wanted. There was a tremendous amount of do-it-yourself-ism of all sorts that went on where if you didn’t feel like you were having a good time you were free to make a better time out of it. There weren’t a lot of real restraints on us and what we were expected to be doing outside of the class area, and so. We had all sorts of things happening. Y’know the Rugby Club goes on a tour of Canada. It just, just took advantage of the ability to do it, so we did it, that kind of thing.

I wanted to tell you that most of my closest friends in the world were at Grinnell, and it’s kind of ironic because here, yeah, here’s it 25 years later.. Y'know, you wouldn’t think somebody who went four semesters might have had quite the same impact as someone who'd spent four years, but really.. when I count on my hands, y’know the people who are closest to me, so many of them are from Grinnell, from the Grinnell era.

I had class at eight in the morning, so I got up early, which when you’re in college, getting up for an eight o’clock class is definitely early. But getting up at seven to go over to go over to professor, er, President Osgood’s house, er, his office, and it’s of course locked up, but he always gets to the office very early so I went over to his office window, and knocked on his window. And he was a little bit shocked, I think, to see a student standing out there, because I don’t think any students are usually up at seven in the morning.

Actually, the first memory I have is the first day of Orientation, being with four students that I hadn’t- I had just met for the first time and the President of the College drove up in a golf cart with a keg on the back, and poured each of us a beer and talked to us for twenty minutes. I had- I’d never been around anything like that before. It was very surprising and for the first time I really realized right then it was going to be an interesting four years.

There seems to be a homing beacon that is inborn in certain people, globally, and they don’t know it until something turns that homing beacon on and it says, “Go to Grinnell,” and they don’t really know why. Almost every person I’ve spoken to who has an affinity for this place -not all Grinnell graduates do- they’ve had a similar experience where something just said, “I need to be there,” and in some cases physically set foot on something on this campus. In my case, the parking lot down by Mears Cottage, and got out of the car, put my foot down and said, “I’m home,” and I don’t know why. This is the place. So, maybe Grinnell chooses us in some cosmic sense.

If I were writing a history of Grinnell College, what would I include? It’s hard to say, it’s so hard to say because it’s just like this feeling. I guess I would write about how Grinnellians form life-long relationships. I would definitely include that, that the people that you meet here, you just, you never forget them, even if you don’t become life-long friends but you form so many bonding rel- so many important relationships and I... The sense of community in Grinnell College is really amazing. Being back here is just, it floods you with memories, like wonderful memories. I think that’s so essential to a college experience, that you come back and you are overwhelmed by this sort of sense of love. That’s cool, but that’s hard to write down, y’know? That’s not- that’s a feeling.

I took Differential Equations as a freshman, and that was quite an experience because Dr. Apostle, who had agreed that I could take the class, said, you know, “How many seniors do we have, how many juniors and how many sophomores,” and he said, “How many freshman? Ah, one.” And everybody else in the class went, “Oh gee, what’s he doing in here?”

And I came here and it was middle of nowhere, so it was complete opposite of what I was used to and I wanted to get far away from home to experience something different. We worried a little about, because they were willing to talk to us, they were farmers, you know, would their farm neighbors think that they were, you know, hanging out with and visiting with a bunch of commies, which is the way a lot of the local people thought of us, as communists or something like that. And the.., they said, “Oh no no don’t worry about them. We’re happy to have you out here,” and things of that sort. They were very great, nice people.

At sit-down dinner, it was mandatory to have a coat and tie. So, most of the students found the wildest tie they could find and the wildest coat. Plaid coats, pink coats and so forth, just for the fact of sitting down to eat and being told what to do rather than what they wanted to do.

That was an amazing class as well, because instead of listening to someone, I got to sit there and think about the problems on my own, and since it was a computer-based math class, instead of spending all the time doing multiplication and division, the computer did all of the grunt work and you got to figure out how to solve the problems.

I remember really liking it as we came into town. It's different from where I live, it’s more town-y less city-y. So, I just thought it was cute. I really liked the redbrick buildings and all the move-in people were super friendly and then Mom didn’t want to leave and she wanted to come here and go to college here, despite the fact that she’s been to college, she’s got a master’s degree and everything.

He was an excellent teacher and I kept in touch with him after I graduated, and learned a lot from him both about the language and about the reality of life in the Soviet Union. He actually had left during the Second World War. He’d been captured by the Germans, and had been in forced labor. When the war was over he thought he would go back to the Soviet Union, but one of his officers said, “If you go back you’re gonna be in big trouble.” So he went to Canada and then he came to Grinnell, on this special teaching program.

I don’t remember ever having conflicts with townies or anything. People would be like, “Oh the townies,” and I’d be like, “I don’t know, I think they’re all pretty cool people. I’ve never had a problem,” which is telling something because I would like walking around town with a dress on and like a dude with a Mohawk and no one was ever like, “Faggot!” No one ever said anything to me, they were always like, “Why are you wearing a dress?” “Oh, ‘cause I’ve got good legs,” and they were like, “Oh, all right. Fair point.” It was very funny.

During my freshman year I was in something called Uncle Sam’s Club. Uncle Sam’s Club was kind of an effort to, it was kind of like a community house, down in the poor part of town. We went down there once a week and we played ping pong and other games with the children and just got to know them, made them feel comfortable with us, tried to keep them doing constructive activities rather than less so.

What we liked to do was to entertain our friends by putting on art shows. So, I would pose outside on the fire escape to try to conform to whatever title Norm gave to me, to the artwork we- was being exhibited. So she’d y’know, put me through great, a lot of contortions being able to pose whatever she titled. There was, “Man Standing on Head” was difficult.

I had been a very good student in high school. I’d been an athlete, a swimmer. I regret to say that I gradually lost altitude with all of that, with all of the exceptional amount of effort that I put into that. But, I would also say that I maybe discovered myself emotionally at Grinnell.

When I came to Grinnell, wrestling season came up and so I joined the varsity team and our coach was Coach Brown. And for some reason, he didn’t like me. There was another student by the name of Frank who was also in the 165 range and we would practice together and we were almost equal in skills. But Coach Brown wanted Frank to be on first team.

About 8 o’clock at night, the nurses’ phones started to ring, and people were getting sick all over campus. So she enrolled about ten of us to search the rooms, and we found some students sprawled in a pool of vomit. They took about twenty people to the hospital. And so I could just envision the next morning, her parents get up for breakfast, and while the wife fixes breakfast, the husband goes out into the wet lawn and gets the Chicago Tribune, or the Des Moines Register, out of the bread bag. And opens it up, and there in giant headlines, “Massive Food Poisoning Hits Grinnell!”

It was a turnaround experience for me, and that’s my story. It was a situation where, for whatever reason, I was not a serious student when I came here. Today you can’t do that. You can’t come in to Grinnell if you have not been a serious student but I was not, and the fact that it was, kind of grabbed me and turned me around and got me going in a different direction. I never had any realization that I could be a capable student. That was completely a discovery for me, at Grinnell.

So I came into Grinnell a young kid, maybe a little cocky, I don’t know, but reasonable, curious person. And left with an excellent degree and excellent education and motivation to pursue a life that has been interesting, rewarding, and challenging.

There was a certain year when almost all of my friends were international students for some reason, and they were mostly Asian, and so I learned to play ping pong and as a result I have the pencil grip where you hold it with your fingers on the back of the paddle, and people always say, “Why do you hold it like- that way?” It’s because I learned to play ping pong from all these Asian guys that I was hanging out with at the time.

I wanted to separate myself from everybody else, and I wanted to have a completely different experience than a large university. I went to a huge high school. My graduating class was 1,000 kids, so I just wanted something completely different. So instead I was looking at some of the view books that were- that I was getting sent after the SATs and PSATs came out and I got Grinnell and I said, “Ooh, Iowa! Nobody would believe I would go there!” and so I applied and they came back, they offered me pretty good financial aid package and they offered to fly me over.

It was probably one of the more difficult times in my life, but probably one of the most cherished times in my life because of the decisions and things that I had to either stand up for or stand up against, and probably made it the one encompassing thing that shaped my life and how I approached everything from then on.

As I remember it, maybe the second or third trip that I took to Grinnell, I sat next to philosophy professor Paul Kuntz, whose big topic was order and chaos, and I got a three hour discussion of order and chaos, which got into the discussion. He wasn’t lecturing to me at all. He was very Socratic on the train, and that was one of the most fantastic conversations of my young life.

We got off I-80 at exit 182 and y’know, going down West Street and I frickin’ stalled that car a couple times on the way in because I’m going, “Wooooow. This place is awesome. I’m loving this town already. I’ve never seen- I’ve never been to Iowa before! I love this town!”
