- Turn off water entering the building in the main furnace room
- Drain the pipes by opening up the valves on all sinks in the addition until they run dry (15-30 minutes possible)
- Take off the white sharkbite cap on the "T" next to the hot water heater
- Install the sharkbite to threaded female fitting
- Apply pipe tape and/or pipe dope to the expansion tank fitting
- Attach the expansion tank by hand until it cannot be tightened by hand anymore (this is standard hand strength of one person)
- Using two pipe wrenches (one on the fitting, one on the tank), tighten it another 1/2-1 turn
- Turn water back on to the building
- Wait for water to run out of all open taps and turn them off
- Verify there are no leaks at the expansion tank
- Turn back on all hot water heaters
This will protect the hot water heater from catastrophic failture. While not likely, an expansion tank will prevent this rare occurence from having major consequences on the structure.Expansion tank and fitting are already onsite next to the tank. Fitting will need to be removed from the tank and inspected for damage with a new one purchased for replacement if necessaryReturn pipe wrenches and pipe tape/dope to the main furnace room and their respective locations within.

- Mop the floor with one mop as a rinse
- Repeat this process until the entire floor has been scrubbed
- Once the entire floor has been scrubbed, follow the manufacturer directions to apply the floor wax (~5 coats)
This will preserve this floor for at least five years before the process needs to be repeated, ensuring it continues to be safe for usage and using less materials than putting in a new floor.If you have experience with this sort of work, we would welcome it!Return supplies to locations from which they were taken and dispose of the chemical containers as safely as possible.
