DATA NOTESRhode Island Facilities: Data are received from ten acute care (11 prior to 2018) hospitals, two Psychiatric hospitals,
and one rehabilitation hospital in Rhode Island. The dashboard provides insights into the ED visits and inpatient stays
in all acute care hospitals not including VA hospital. This report excludes data from specialty care hospitals such as psychiatry
and rehabilitation. Rhode Island HDD does not include services in outpatient settings. For patients receiving care in more than
one facility, encounters are reported separately by facility during the reporting year, if patients' reason for visits are same or
related. Therefore, the number of encounters exceeds the number of Rhode Island patients who utilized hospital-based services
during the reporting year.

Population: This data report is limited to discharges among Rhode Island residents.

Emergency Department Visits: For ED visits, the unit of analysis is an ED visit, not the patient or the person. A person who visits the ED multiple times in one year is counted each time as a separate ED visit. The ED visits that are displayed in this visualization consist of encounters that do not result in admission (i.e., treat-and-release visits). This data table does not include ED visits that resulted in hospitalizations. Counts are summarized by the discharge year.

Hospitalizations: For hospitalization, the unit of analysis is the hospital discharge i.e., the inpatient stay, not the patient or person. A person who is admitted to the hospital multiple times a year is counted each time as a separate discharge from the hospital. The hospitalizations that are included in this data include patient admissions via ED. Counts are summarized by the discharge year.

Rates: Rates are calculated per 1000 population. Rate includes the number of hospitalizations or emergency department visits in the numerator and the Rhode Island resident population in the denominator. The numerator is consistently defined with the denominator. Rate calculations use population estimates, and not all subpopulation estimates are available. it is not possible to calculate accurate rates for some subpopulations in this report. Population estimates are obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau, 2016-2020 American County Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates. For the summary data, the population estimates are derived from 2015-2019 ACS 5 year estimates (available at IPUMS USA).

Clinical Coding: Most common diagnoses are identified using Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Clinical Classifications Software Refined (CCSR); CCSR is based on the principal diagnostic code of the International Classification of Diseases, tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM); CCSR aggregates ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes into clinically meaningful categories. The principal diagnosis is that condition that has been established after study to be chiefly responsible for the patient's admission to the hospital.

Suppression of Statistics: For certain combinations of demographic groups/categories, the diagnosis is not necessarily listed
when the count is less than 5 in compliance with the Rhode Island Small Numbers Reporting Policy.
