Fry were detected after they had already become free swimming. Once observed, the tank was fed with freshly hatched brine shrimp twice per day. There are multiple breeding females in this community, but this group of 8 fry has been the largest spawn achieved thus far.

October 22, 2022. Wet Spot Tropical Fish.
Wild Caught
Approximately 2 years plus.
Colombia. 5/17/2023Wild
Male digs pits in gravel, defends territory…females enter spawning area and spawn in the pits. After oviposition, female is driven off.
Parental care provided by the male. Male guards eggs and fry, driving off conspecifics. First food for dry was biofilm, infusoria, Paramecia. Artemia nauplii and microworms at approximately 14 days post-hatch. Hatch time was 36-48 hours.
Temperature 76 degrees Fahrenheit. pH 6.8 3 degrees GH, negligible KH. Some botanicals used (leaves), driftwood, Anubias sp. Water had strong current provided by a Matten filter. Water was RO with Seachem Equilibrium added to remineralize.
Fluval Plant 3.0. Lighting somewhat subdued…10 hour photoperiod.
40 gallon breeder. River gravel.
Anubias barteri mounted on driftwood. A couple pf clumps pf Java Moss.
As far as I am aware, this is only the second ever recorded occurrence of spawning this rare species (see Amazonas January/February 2016). Contrary to some online rumors… this species is NOT an egg-scatterer. P. kyburzi was described in 1966 from rivers draining the Pacific slopes of Colombia, where it appears to be endemic .

The males and females courted each other and laid / fertilized the scattered eggs. I left all inhabitants in the tank and let the fry raise up in there on their own.
I mostly let nature take it's course. I sporadically added baby brine shrimp, crushed flakes and tubifex worms to feed the fry and the existing aquarium inhabitants.
Temperature varied over the course of months as this tank has no heater but is high on a rack system near a window. Average temperature ranged from 76-79 degrees during spawning.
No light and no lid. The tank is near a transom window in my fish room and that seems to do just fine for this aquarium.

The male relentless pestered the female daily it seemed. Eventually I noticed her abdomen getting larger and she would drop the young out usually one at a time. And some times days would go by between releasing her young. The young hid in the java moss and at crushed flake right away.
Let the parents just do their thing and gave the fry time to develop. I didn't feed the aquarium any differently. Mostly crushed flakes were used with occasional freeze dried tubifex worms being fed. Generally speaking I feed that tank 2 times a day.
Temp ranged from 76-81 on some days without a heater. ph was steady around 7.2. No additives and minimal water changes.
No light on this aquarium. However it does receive some sunlight from a sky light in the fish room. However, it is not direct sunlight.
