1The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the WildSwitch201712/31/20221/5/20236NoLast replay before TotK.
Went in with the lofty goal of "true 100%" where I actually got everything and upgraded all equipment to max level, but then I decided to not do that. Finished the divine beasts and killed Ganon, easy and fun.
3
2Pokemon X3DS20131/6/20231/8/20233NoGen 6 was my return to playing Pokemon on release (I missed gens 3-5) so I'll always have a fondness for it, despite it being a very easy game.
Chesnaught, Talonflame, Gardevoir, Tyrantrum, Clawitzer, Aegislash.
4
3Persona 4 GoldenPC20111/8/20231/23/202316YesComing from P5R: P4G story is better, I miss the gameplay/QoL improvements in 5R. Enjoyed this but the dungeon crawl grind started to wear on me toward the end.
5
4Pokemon Legends ArceusSwitch20221/23/2023NoWanted to replay, turned out I lost my save data when my old Switch died. Guess I'll have to complete the Pokedex again.
6
5Yakuza KiwamiPC20161/28/2023YesHaving played Yakuza 0 and 7, with the announcement of Like a Dragon 8 coming out next year I figured it was time to play 1 through 6.
Combat was giving me fits so I had to drop it.
7
6Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD RemasterPC20211/28/20232/18/202322Yesfeaturing Dante from the Devil May Cry series
True Demon Ending, Normal (Merciful to grind but Normal for every boss)
Good game. Don't see myself replaying for all the endings.
8
7Metroid Prime RemasteredSwitch20232/8/20232/10/20233NoDoesn't play exactly like the Gamecube version, 0/10
Hope they remaster Prime 2 because this was an excellent remaster. Weird control choices for the "Classic" mode with moving the jump/shoot/morph buttons around, but thankfully Switch lets you remap those (because I'm not relearning muscle memory).
100% in 5:56. I miss sequence breaking.
9
8Pokemon VioletSwitch20222/10/20232/18/20239NoWatching competitive and speedruns made me want to replay gen 9, and I played Scarlet initially so Violet for variety.
Mono-ghost team: Skeledirge, Mismagius, Mimikyu, Gholdengo, Annihilape, Dragapult
10
9HavenPC20202/21/20232/24/20234YesThis was nice and fun. I could have done with less combat (and also remembering the shield mechanic - that's on me). Controls could've been tighter - I can't count the number of times I went to slightly correct direction by tilting stick left or right and the game considered it a u-turn (which should happen on a down input). Accessibility options helped with following the threads. Overall recommend for a short, relatively easy game.

Played until I got bored

11Kirby's Return to Dream Land DeluxeSwitch20232/24/20232/26/20233YesI was thinking this was just gonna be Kirby's Adventure again but that's Nightmare in Dream Land. Either way, Kirby is cute
Liked the Kirby game, but I do hope they stick with more 3D ones like Forgotten Land in the future. Magolor Epilogue was fun too but I prefer the Kirby gameplay, so glad it wasn't too long.
13
12Persona 3 PortablePC20092/26/20233/19/202322YesI never felt like
Male route. Good game, but there was too much Tartarus. Social links were funny, in that the characters bare their souls to the MC and he's just like "cool" or "whatever" or "cheer up", and then they do cheer up and you rank up.
14
13Mass Effect (LE)PC20073/5/20233/10/20236NoSomething for when I've had enough JRPGing for the day. Never played as a Sentinel before.
15
14Mass Effect 2 (LE)PC20103/10/20233/20/202311NoSame as ME1.
16
15Pokemon EmeraldGBA20053/15/2023NoI like Pokemon
17
16Mass Effect 3 (LE)PC20123/20/2023NoI like Mass Effect
18
17Pokemon Leaf GreenGBA20043/24/20233/25/20232NoStone evo team - Nidoqueen, Raichu, Ninetales, Exeggutor, Vaporeon
19
18Dragon Age OriginsPC20093/25/20234/8/202315NoDid everything this time including all DLCs, had a much more enjoyable experience than my first playthrough last year. Human Noble Warrior, became King (consort), had a god baby with a witch, followed her into a mirror.
20
19Dragon Age IIPC20114/8/20234/16/20239NoDual wielding rogue is real fast in this game, and consequently real fun. Also did the DLCs that I skipped in my past playthrough. This game gets hate for not being DA:O but I like it.
21
20Dragon Age InquisitionPC20144/16/20234/28/202313NoDid pretty much everything in main game, DLCs were not playing well with some mods so I didn't play them. Also I wanted to move on to something else, I've been playing this series for a month.
22
21Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven StarsSNES19964/29/20234/30/20232NoEveryone was doing low-level runs so I wanted to get in on the fun and do a high-level run. Game is still really good (though level 30 grind is kinda boring but didn't take that long)
23
22Star Wars: Knights of the Old RepublicPC20035/1/2023No"I need something to play between now and Tears of the Kingdom but I don't want to play another RPG"
Scout/Consular, one-handed, use the Force. Started dark side but some of the choices were bumming me out so pivoted to gray, then pivoted to Zelda whoops
24
23The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the KingdomSwitch20235/12/20235/28/202317YesProbably game of the year. They really went all out with this one.
Got all the shrines and lightroots without looking anything up which is a real win for me personally. My last two shrines were the ones inside the thunderhead which I did before doing the main quest that clears it up, which in retrospect was a mistake.
A lot of content - I completed about 60 of the 140 side quests and had only found about 10 more. Compendium about 2/3 complete. Bunch of overworld minibosses left unkilled. Only unlocked 2 great fairies and upgraded a handful of outfits to level 2 to see what the set bonus was - mostly new ones (Yiga, Frog, Depths, maybe one or two others).
Curious to see how they inevitably add DLC to this game. I imagine Master Mode will make a return and I'll probably play it. Thing that got me curious was the outfit you get for completing all the shrines - looks like Ganondorf as a Zonai, described as a savior of Hyrule?
Overall I think nothing will ever beat BotW for me - using the same Hyrule meant I was already familiar with the surface, sky was sparse, depths was just inverted surface. Still close to the top of my Zelda rankings.
25
24The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Anniversary Edition)PC20115/28/20236/10/202314NoJust kinda messing around in Todd's Nordic Adventure. It's fun.
Finished main quest and Dawnguard (and a bunch of sidequests), started Dragonborn and decided to move on.
Maxed enchanting and smithing to make dragonscale armor that let me cast destruction spells for free. The elemental blast spell (creation club content included with AE) is busted when you can spam it for free.
26
25We ❤️ Katamari Reroll+ Royal ReveriePC20236/2/20236/3/20232YesNever played the original We<3K, loved Katamari Damacy Reroll so this was an instant buy.
My favorite levels are still the classic "roll up to a huge size within this time limit", but the other level types can be kind of interesting too. Fun game.
27
26System Shock (Remake)PC20236/10/2023YesI mistakenly started the game on normal enemy difficulty which turned out to be harder than I wanted. Had to restart to play on easy and redoing the first two levels burned me out a little. I'll come back to it.
28
27Persona 5 RoyalPC20206/11/20236/25/202315NoNG+ Merciless
NG+ was fun, third semester was less fun than the first time - pacing is weird, wish there was more focus on your original team than it being all about Sumire but I get it. Need a JRPG break.
29
28The MessengerPC20186/26/20236/27/20232YesStarted this back when it came out but dropped it after the start of the 16-bit section for unknown reasons (I don't remember). Shouldn't have dropped it, this was a lot of fun. Tight platforming, not too many boss fights, fun metroidvania-ish action and exploration. Now I'm ready for Sea of Stars
30
29Return of the Obra DinnPC20186/27/20236/28/20232Yes2018 indie gaming week apparently
This ruled, I couldn't stop playing (apart from when I had to due to sleep and work). Bit of trial and error but I was mostly able to logic things out which is a nice feeling for me.
31
30The Last CampfirePC20206/29/20236/30/20232YesCute little puzzler. I saved all the little guys and built a duck boat :)
32
31Shin Megami Tensei VSwitch20217/1/20237/10/202310YesFirstly, the platforming-ish section in the Demon King's castle with the fans? Awful, get your platforming out of my RPG.
Enjoyed the rest of the game. Strength builds are fun. Think I prefer Nocturne though.
33
32Fallout 4PC20157/1/2023NoSomething to play that requires no brain
34
33The WitnessPC20167/11/20237/14/20234YesI want Jonathan Blow to know that the only feeling this game gave me was nausea.
Was gonna try to do all the optional stuff until I realized this game is for sickos. Lasers only, and I cheated.
35
34Chrono TriggerSNES19957/14/20237/17/20234NoSecond best SNES RPG holds up and remains a banger
36
35Professor Layton and the Last SpecterDS20117/17/2023YesThis reminds me of a puzzle
37
36Atomic HeartPC20237/19/20237/25/20237YesThe main character is very annoying, the platforming sucks. This game wanted to be Soviet Bioshock and it kinda got there. I liked the Testing Grounds sections and unlocking weapon upgrades was a nice reward for doing them. The story was compelling enough to keep me playing. Didn't care for the overworld sections - they recommend you drive, but the driving is unmanageable (on keyboard, anyway). Overall, it was alright.
38
37Final Fantasy VI (Pixel Remaster)PC1994/20217/26/20238/2/20238NoGood game. Spamming Ultimas for 1 MP is fun. Grinding AP (or having to earn it at all) is not. Random encounters are not fun. Moogle Charm is fun.
Got all the characters and espers (except Ragnarok because the sword is better). Don't think I intentionally chose "Attack" for anyone but Fixed Dice Setzer.
39
38Baldur's Gate 3PC20238/3/20238/20/202318YesI didn't play the early access since I only decided to play this about a month before full release. I've never played D&D.
I beat this game 5 times this year. I didn't play much else in the last third of the year. Safe to say I like this game a lot, absolutely my personal GotY.
40
39Doom EternalPC20208/21/20238/25/20235YesBeen meaning to play this since I finished Doom 2016, just haven't gotten around to it. Figure a straightforward shooter will be good as a palate cleanser between turn-based RPGs.
Think I liked Doom 2016 better. Really found myself ready for the game to end a couple levels before it did, and then the final levels were kinda long. Got all the collectibles, did MOST of the level challenges - there was one level that had some tough challenges involving glory kills that I didn't go back and replay. Fun overall, but overstayed its welcome imo. Hand pain setting in during the playthrough probably doesn't help my rating.
41
40DishonoredPC20128/26/20238/28/20233NoWent through and got low chaos ghost (no kills, perfect stealth) on main game and the two DLCs. I would happily play Dishonored 3 if it were to be made.
42
41Sea of StarsPC20238/29/20239/5/20238YesThis was pretty fun, all things considered. I felt it was less of an RPG, more of a Zelda game with turn-based combat. Emphasis on puzzles and dungeons and you get a hookshot, sounds like Zelda to me. There was a point where I kept expecting the game to be like "ok this is the final dungeon" but then more and more game just kept happening to me. The cleanup/sidequests for true ending were my favorite part. Got all achievements except the one that requires you to beat 10 bosses with a late-game relic, effectively requiring NG+, which I probably won't ever do.
Glad I played The Messenger earlier this year to appreciate the references and lore a bit more.
43
42The Legend of Zelda: Link's AwakeningSwitch20199/5/20239/5/20231NoNeeded something quick to play while waiting for Starfield to be available to play for non-preorders. Finished just in time.
44
43StarfieldPC20239/5/20239/16/202312YesAbout what I expected it to be, which is essentially "Fallout 4 in space". Enjoyed it, but got the Bethesda burnout and kinda rushed to the ending after getting all the powers. Likely to replay in the future but probably not until mods are abundant.
45
44Cyberpunk 2077PC20209/30/202310/9/202310NoThe long-awaited 2.0 and Phantom Liberty.
2.0 changes took a bit to get used to since I was very used to the original gameplay systems, but in the end it was still a ton of fun to play.
Phantom Liberty was worth playing once. I didn't care for the Idris Elba character all that much, the story was compelling enough to get through. Went with the new ending just to see it, but I never will again (leaving with the nomads is the best ending choice, and I've done the rest).

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition
PC202010/10/202310/18/20239NoIn what has turned out to be the year of (J)RPGs for me, I am playing this for the third time with the intent to actually finish the true ending.
I did it and it was well worth it. Game is a banger.
47
46Super Mario Bros. WonderSwitch202310/23/202310/29/20237YesI'm never going to gel with modern 2D Mario the way a lot of people seem to, and that's ok. I enjoyed it, I'll play it exactly this one time and will have more fun in the future watching other people play it - I'm sure it'll be a great speedgame.
100% complete except for standees, so 100% complete. Didn't spend purple coins on anything besides wonder seeds until pretty late in the game so there was a lot of "wasted" currency that I collected while maxed out, and I don't at all feel like farming.
48
47IsletsPC202211/16/202311/17/20232YesExactly the level of difficulty I want out of my 2D exploration platformers. Great spritework. Little more bullet hell than I like but you get a dodge roll so it's fine. I can remember having one criticism but I can't recall what it was so it clearly wasn't that egregious. Fun, would recommend.
49
48Super Mario RPGSwitch202311/17/202311/18/20232YesExcellent remake. Liked the post-game content. Always wish there was more SMRPG. My only complaint is I suck at Super Jumps (did in the original too, this is not the fault of the game).
50
49The Witcher 3: Wild HuntPC201511/25/2023NoJerald Rivera
51
50Peggle NightsPC200711/29/202311/29/20231YesIt is the work week from hell and I needed something mindless. Played a bunch of Deluxe in the past but never Nights. It was fun.
52
51The Outer WorldsPC201912/24/2023No
53
52Metroid DreadSwitch202112/26/202312/27/20232NoNephew was playing this at Christmas and it made me want to replay.

53Quest 64N64199812/30/202312/31/20232NoAnnual New Year's playthrough. Started off a Wind main, got bored of it and went back to Earth for the endgame (with Water the whole way through for healing). This game rules.
