G01-A Little Night MagicNice composition. It looks like there may be some banding issues in the sky area most likely from the printer. Try printing as a tiff. May need a little more structure/ sharpening on the castle. Since we read from left to right, this would be a stronger composition if it were flipped on the vertical axis so the castle would be on the right.
3
G02-Bare AspenInteresting textures. May want to crop out some of the white sky. My eye keeps going to the loan dark tree on the right. May want to crop in from the right and dodge the main cluster at the 2/3rds mark that appears to be the main subject so it will draw a little more attention, rather than just a sea of grey.
4
G03-Early Fall ReflectionG2Nice choice of matte paper. The perfectly smooth water and the smooth clouds adds a lot of interest. The colored tree subject is well placed and nicely sharpened. The very sharp river bank line on the left could be improved with some additional burning so it isn't the brightest object in the image.
5
G04-Eyes of the TigerNice centering and great focus range from the nose to the eyes. Some of the white stripes at the top of the head are a little burned out and need to be toned down. The eyes could be dodged to be a little brighter.
6
G05-Imperial WalkerG4Great title, very dramatic and effective post-processes are successful in taking the subject out of reality and closer to a galaxy far, far away. The sharpness of the subject is complemented by the softness of the clouds. The orange square bottom left should be de-saturated to match the background so it doesn't draw attention away from the subject.
7
G06-In the GameNice job of compositing. Good complementary colors. The shadow created by the game piece seems unrealistic compared to the shadow created by the hand. It looks darker and from a light source overhead whereas the shadow from the hand comes from a light source that is at more of an angle. The composition may be improved if the image is flipped vertical since we read left to right and the hand makes a nice leading line to the subject.
8
G07-In the WindG1HStrong composition. May be improved by flipping the image vertical so the angle flows from left to right. The words so close to the hood ornament may be distracting. The chrome bumper in the lower left would look better with the blue sky reflection toned down slightly.
9
G08-Pair Of House FinchesGreat focus and composition. Nice separation from the background. The wood complements their undercoat. Colors look very natural, almost muted, it may be improved by printing with a slight more warmth. The title could invoke more interest.
10
G09-Pemaquid Point LighthouseG1Great composition, nice colors, great reflection, good choice of paper for printing the image. Good details in the darks and light areas. I would consider a vertical flip to the composition to make it more pleasing to the eye. Excellent work.
11
G10-Perspective & The Red ShirtNice cropping, interesting image. The sky in the background looks fake because the sun on the main subject is high in the sky, but the background sky is at sunset. The orange sky draws attention away from the orange rocks. The stone detail could be improved with some local contrast /clarity structure or unsharp mask.
12
G11-Pink MagnoliaUnique execution. Overall the image feels a little busy with too many distracting elements. The eye keeps being drawn to 3 different bright spots. It would be better with one main center of interest, focal point. Bottom right 'water stains' are distracting. Upper right branch looks like a bad edit.
13
G12-Singing WrenNice capture. May be more pleasing to the eye if it was flipped vertical (to read left to right) so the open area of the composition would lead into the bright bird breast.
14
G13-The Lighthouse and the RocksPleasing image. Could use a little more contrast between the white lighthouse and the white clouds. The lighthouse could use some additional sharpening. The foreground rock with the algae patterns, although interesting may be over-powering. Perhaps a tighter crop from top and bottom would add more interest. The clouds on the right look like they may have printed with some purple artifacts that could be easily removed.
15
G14-Up Before The FishermenG2HUnique capture, great early morning light. Although it has lots of elements the blue and yellow sky really compliments the orange buoys on the ship. Nice choice of paper, but I would be careful to not let the blacks plug up. You should be able to pull a little more detail out of the water in the blacks. The bluish white boat on the far right is too distracting especially because it is white and has readable numbers on it. This could be improved by cropping in some on the right, burning down the white boat to look more grey. I would look at colorizing the white buoys to match the orange one.
16
G30-American IndianUnique toning effects, Not sure they work the best with this image. Several things are bothersome in this image: 1-Looking straight up the nose with such dark nostrils 2- soft hair with very sharp eyelashes 3- necklace horn is chopped off on one side. A rustic and moody image such as this may be better served with a more realistic, crunchy sharpened effect rather than the soft, dreamy and ethereal effect that has been applied.
17
G31-BewitchingGood title and a valiant effort to elevate the image. It's a fun family capture. But once you strip away all the Photoshop work, this image is a simple capture of a very sweet and beautiful person. The good news/ bad news is no amount of Photoshop is going to make this sweet person look scary, spooky, mean or evil. It would take a lot of prosthetics, makeup, acting, dramatic lighting and then a lot of Photoshop to make it work.
18
G32-Fire!Nice color pallet. Good printing and choice of paper. The subtle red flag adds interest without being too overbearing. Although you can see the leader yelling fire, it looks like some of the muskets didn't fire. The only other distracting part of this image is the foreground that looks more "in-focus" than the subject.
19
G33-StripesNice leading lines left to right, good camera angle. A few hot spots on her hand shoulder and face. The rocks could be burned down some. Her head seems to be moving and lost some focus, it may have been more interesting if her face was turned more to the right so we could see at least one eye looking into the distance.
20
G34-Successful River CrossingG3Good composition. Very photojournalistic story telling. The title is an important part of the story. Perfect timing with all eyes looking 45 degrees to the left -BRAVO! Nice Black and white processing, good tonal range for a back-lit subject. Can definitely see all 4 legs with a forward motion of the elephant. If you have the room in the image you may want to print it with a little more space on top and bottom, it would feel a little more intimate if the photographer wasn't so close.
21
G35-The Eyes of a ChildCute kid, unique composition. The highlights are slightly blown-out and should be burned down. Not sure what the story is here, but it is only slightly interesting and leaves the viewer wishing for more.
22
N15-A New BeginningNice color pallet, good technical execution. The composition could be improved if you had another inch on the right and burn down the hot area on the ground just behind the leafless tree.
23
N16-Among Tranquil BloomsN3Good use of color and composition. Nice format. The title captures the true essence of the image. The big tree could use a little extra sharpening.
24
N17-Beauty in WhiteGood details in highlights and shadows despite the harsh high-in-the-sky sun. The exact point of focus seems to be just in front of the flower, this could be corrected with a little extra sharpening on the subject. If it were shot at a higher f-stop or closer to the subject you would have had a greater depth-of-field.
25
N18-Boulder BeachN1Great leading lines, exceptional depth-of-field, excellent composition, nice contrast of hard and soft elements. Good color pallet. Good use of dogging to add interest. Good shadow detail. Nice choice of print media.
26
N19-Feeding A JuvenileGood focal point and depth of field to highlight the subject and reduce distracting background elements. Nice printing details. The story may be more complete if we saw more of the baby bird at the bottom.
27
N20-Fishing BearInteresting story line enhanced by the title. Good technical execution. Cropping feels a little tight, if you gave it another half inch on the top and bottom the subject may feel more comfortable in it's space.
28
N21-Hanging Out to DryN2Good choice to go with the black and white. The crop could be enhanced by giving an extra inch on the top to bring the horizon line lower than the middle of the image. An additional crop in from the right 1.5"-2" would bring the lower bird into the prime 'rule-of-thirds' location and add a little more visual interest. Leading lines come in from the right (light to dark) so you may consider a vertical flip so the leading lines come in from the left but that would change the prime focal point to the lower left third which may not be as appealing as the lower right third but it may be worth a try to print it that way and see what is most appealing to the eye.
29
N22-Just Winging ItPerfect timing on the capture. It is currently cropped at the 25% location and would be more appealing if it were cropped closer to 33%. The subject could use a little more sharpening. A symmetrical subject like this may be better centered in a square crop but still leaving plenty of surroundings around it.
30
N23-Let's Fly awayNice colors and presentation. Interesting elements. The secondary subject (the flower on the right) may distract too much with the primary subject. The color intensity and sharpness of both flowers make them compete with each other for the viewers attention. An image that isolates the main flower may have a greater impact and interest.
31
N24-Oh Deer!N1HGood composition. Perfect timing. Good print quality. Nice leading line and subject isolation. If you cut the image at the center line you have 2 very nice compositions, the upper image of the foreground with the dark green tree as the subject and the colorful mountains then the lower image of the deer nicely arraigned. The dark green tree competes with the deer subject. Consider a crop that only shows the 4 deer on the right without the evergreen tree.
32
N25-Proud EagleSimple composition. Straight-forward subject matter. Textbook quality. Good focus on the eye. The slight fill-flash insures a bright eye, good texture in the dark areas and good exposure on a strongly backlit subject. This image would be elevated if it had more story-telling elements.
33
N26-Roseate SpoonbillInteresting composition. The sharpening on this image created some unnatural looking elements such as the dark hairlines in the wing feathers and on the shoulder and the white marks on the beak. The soft vs. hard processing in this image didn't work to it's favor and neither did the choice of matte paper flattening out the color range. The viewers eye is distracted at the bottom of the image by the wings being 'clipped' -feels akin to chopping off ones hands.
34
N27-Spoonbill In FlightN4Excellent capture at the peak of flight. Good lighting showing detail. The viewer can see just a hint of motion-blur at the tip of the wings adding to the drama of the image. This tells a good story. It may be improved by adding another inch to the top and left side putting the wing in the third composition position and giving the bird just a little more space to live in. The background is nicely burned in to reduce distractions.
35
N28-Springtime AspensTechnically well done. Lacking in a clear center of interest. The viewers eye wanders from bright spot to bright spot creating dissonance and a lack of satisfaction. Similar images to this often work well due to symmetry or a repeating pattern, this image has neither.
36
N29-Swamp LilyNicely exposed and lit image. There is a strange light blue line at the top 1/4" into the image, perhaps a printer mishap? Not sure this image needs so much blue space at the top or left, it would be enhanced if you cropped 2" off the top and left side. Not much story-telling going on here. If a bird or an insect came near this flower at the moment of capture, the interest quotient would skyrocket.
