??02001/10/01Lt. Gen. James B. Peake, Army Surgeon General, explained that the Army took a three-phase approach to responding to the medical needs of the terrorist attack. The first course was the immediate response that included simply trying to pull people out of the debris created by the crash. He said this was a combined response with people from the community, emergency medical personnel and staff from the Rader clinic at Ft. Myer.
"We knew about it immediately because I was on the phone with someone [who] was enroute to the Pentagon and saw the plane go in and saw smoke come out. I was able to immediately alert Walter Reed and start mobilizing Walter Reed itself," Dr. Peake said. "Very quickly we also realized that people would be going to local hospitals so we sent liaisons to each of the local hospitals to start making sure we have accountability from the very beginning."

I was told by one witness, an Air Force enlisted - senior enlisted man, that he was outside when it occurred. He said that he saw a helicopter circle the building. He said it appeared to be a U.S. military helicopter, and that it disappeared behind the building where the helicopter landing zone is - excuse me - and he then saw fireball go into the sky.
It's a very tense situation obviously, but initial reports from witnesses indicate that there was in fact a helicopter circling the building, contrary to what the AP reported, according to the witnesses I've spoken to anyway, and that this helicopter disappeared behind the building, and that there was then an explosion. That's about all I have from here.

??WJLA (ABC 7) Cameraman01Wayne Madsen, an investigative reporter, talked with a cameraman for WJLA, ABC 7, in Washington DC, who had been driving to the Pentagon and came upon a woman standing beside her car in shock. The cameraman stopped and walked over to her. She could not speak, but pointed to the far side of her car. He went around the other side of the car and saw that parts of the passenger side had been sheared off and that there was a piece of a plane's landing gear on the ground nearby.

We sat outside with all of the neighbors for a while, but the air was turning our eyes red and making it hard to breath. It was time to come in.
Everyone smells the fuel. It’s not just my imagination. I’ve showered several times now. Washed my clothes again and again. I can’t get rid of the smell, I was no longer sure if it was real or my imagination. Everyone tell me it’s real, but for a while I wondered if they could be humoring me, pretending to smell it. It’s hard to know what the fuck to think.
We never turn on the TV in the mornings. Today, on a whim, Husband did, just as a plane hit the WTC. As they were showing the impact in replay they cut away. A second plane had crashed.
It was unthinkable. It was confusing. It was also New York, it wasn’t here.
I tore myself away and got in the car. I had a meeting, there would be hell to pay if I missed it. The Dean would never forgive me. I had a bad feeling but I went anyway.
As I drove in I surfed the radio stations looking for news. All music. No mention of NY. Traffic was bad on the highway. I had this delusional idea that I should take a shortcut. That it would be a safer route. I don’t do it often, since it’s easy to get tangled in a military convoy if you scoot through at the wrong time of day. It involves some access roads, the Pentagon parking lot, some back roads. It’s hard to know what I was thinking, but I’m pretty sure I felt like of all the potential targets in town, no one was dumb enough to hit the Pentagon. Plus, there wasn’t any news on the radio, so we had to be in the clear.
As I came up along the Pentagon I saw helicopters.
That’s not strange. It’s the Pentagon.
Then I saw the plane. There were only a few cars on the road, we all stopped. I know I wanted to believe that plane was making a low descent into National Airport, but it was nearly on the road. And it was headed straight for the building.
It made no sense.
It was there. A huge jet. Then it was gone.
A massive hole in the side of the Pentagon gushed smoke. The noise was beyond description. The smell seemed to singe the inside of my nose. The earth seemed to stop shaking for a second, but then sirens began and the ground seemed to shake again – this time from the incoming barrage of firetrucks, police cars. military vehicles.
People were pouring out of the building like ants. An MP checked on me. Made sure I hadn’t been hurt. No burning debris in the car, just smoke. Just me.
We had a conversation. I don’t remember it.
He tried to send me south, but traffic was pouring out of the city by now.
“Where do you work?”
I told him.
“Go there. Stay there.”
He cleared me to leave the grounds and sent me on my way. I felt like I’d been hypnotized. The man told me to drive north, so I drove north. It was the stupidest possible thing to do.
I called my boss. I had no memory of how to work my cellphone. I hit redial and his number came up. “Something hit the Pentagon. It must have been a helicopter.”
I knew that wasn’t right, but I heard myself say it. I heard myself believe it, if only for a minute.
“Buildings don’t eat planes. That plane, it just vanished. There should have been parts on the ground. It should have rained parts on my car. The airplane didn’t crash. Where are the parts?” That’s the conversation I had with myself on the way to work. It made sense this morning. I swear that it did.
When I got to work, no one could believe that the Pentagon had been hit. They were busy following reports that the State Department had been bombed. There’s not a lot of airflow in the media center, there in front of the monitors. After a few minutes or arguing with my coworkers, insisting the Pentagon had been hit, it came on the news. The images came on the news.
Up to that point I’d been ordered to attend that meeting I went in for in the first place. My somewhat sooty, smelly, shocked demeanor got me out of it.
Unfortunately, now there was no way to get home. The roads were jammed. There was no where to go.
I finally cleared my head enough to drive and spent hours getting home. I spent an eternity in my car. I couldn’t roll up the windows, the car smelled like the Inferno.
Eventually I got back home, back to the place I should have stayed in the first place.
There seems to be no footage of the crash, only the site. The gash in the building looks so small on TV. The massiveness of the structure lost in the tight shots of the fire. There was a plane. It didn’t go over the building. It went into the building. I want them to find it whole, wedged between floors or something. I know that isn’t going to happen, but right now I pretend.
I want to see footage of the crash.
I want to make it make sense. I want to know why there’s this gap in my memory, this gap that makes it seem as though the plane simply became invisible and banked up at the very last minute, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

It seems so unhealthy to see the planes in NY crash over and over. To see the building fall again and again. I saw it once, the Pentagon is shambles. I don’t know that I want to see the crash ever again. Even the pictures of the blaze are too much right now as the firefighters try to contain it. It’s weird to watch it on TV while the same smoke drifts by your windows.
I’ve showered and showered. Ultimately, I think I’m going to throw away my clothes. I don’t think the smell will ever come out.

ENSOR: Well, what exactly did you see? Let's look at the Pentagon now, as you describe what exactly happened at the Pentagon this morning?
BARBARA: As we were driving into town on 395, there was an exit. We were trying to get off of the exit for the Memorial Bridge. BARBARA: It was coming on less than a 45 degree angle, and coming down towards the side of the -- of 395. And when it came down, it just missed 395 and went down below us, and then you saw the boom -- the fire come up from it.

BARBARA: No, I did not see what kind of an airline. I just assumed because we were so close to the airport, that it was coming in to land.

?GordonAir Force Honor Guard members01As I walked from the Metro station to the Arlington National Cemetery administration building, I enjoyed the crisp and cool morning with the clearest, bluest sky I had seen since arriving in Virginia. There was a sense that the fall season was approaching and I celebrated the opportunity to enjoy a true seasonal change, changing leaves, crisp temperatures and all that had been missed through many years in desert climates.
My plan for the day was to meet with a family to plan a funeral for the following week and then to do some visitation at the Pentagon. I had no funeral service at Arlington making it a perfect day to visit and continue exploring that vast complex. I was to meet with the Hoster family at 0830. I expected the meeting to last about one-half hour and then I would grab the Metro and be off to the Pentagon. However, the planning took longer than expected and I never want to seem to rush through things with a family that is grieving. As they left I came back to the main office and heard that the World Trade Tower had been hit by a plane. There was a TV available with only "rabbit ears" and we watched the fuzzy picture for a few minutes, only to be surprised by the second hit. I came back to my office to check email and to do some work. Being busy at the computer I paid little attention to how much time had passed, but suddenly I heard a loud and terrified scream from a lady in an office followed by loud weeping exclamations. I thought someone might have just discovered a friend or family member had been in the towers in New York. Then before I could think any further, I hear another grave voice coming down the hall, "The Pentagon has been hit!" My first thoughts were scoffing, "No, couldn't be... must be a mistake, over-reaction..." but I went to the TV and in a few moments the news was broadcast. The Pentagon is just across the highway from one end of Arlington NC. I had an impulse to rush out of the building to see what I could see, but somehow it seemed crass and thrill-seeking so I watched the news for awhile. Rather numb, and still unable to fully grasp that this was reality, I did eventually go outside. The AF Honor Guard members had just returned from a funeral and were standing across the parking lot. I looked with awe and tears at the huge gray-white cloud and then wandered over to talk to some of the Airmen. I discovered that they had been at the end of the cemetery directly across the highway from the side of the Pentagon that was hit. They had heard, some had seen a plane coming in skimming trees and light poles. Many saw the fireball, all felt the concussion of the explosion. They were still aghast, probably frightened, angry, and grieving.
At Arlington, funerals were concluded and others for the day were cancelled. I talked with a family that were to come to bury their father. I was to do the service at 1300. They needed to know by 1030 whether to come or not. As that time quickly arrived, masses were being evacuated from DC. Arlington had decided to close completely. So I called the family and to tell them services would be rescheduled. The Honor Guard members were using every phone we had available to notify family and friends that they were OK, that is if they could get through. The phone circuits in the area were jammed!
By 1130, we still had most of the staff at Arlington, plus the AF Honor Guard, a few Navy officers that had been here for a service along with a dozen family members... and they were all beginning to wonder about lunch. Those of us in the chaplains' office decided to check with the dining hall at Ft. Meyer to see if we could get a large number of box lunches. They were and we ordered 65 for our military folks, civilian staff, and family members still here. I took a Navy honor guard member and one of our chaplain assistants to Ft. Meyer. The gate between ANC and Ft. Meyer was closed, but explaining our mission we were allowed to enter the locked-down Army post. Soldiers were already in battle dress with helmets and their web gear. An armored vehicle came down the street with the top-mounted machine gun manned. There were MP's everywhere with their red and blue lights flashing. We managed to get to the shopette where I used my ATM card to get the cash required for the box lunches. At the dinning hall they had four large boxes of lunches ready for pick-up. We loaded the van and returned to ANC.
At 1230 we had a prayer service and then distributed the box lunches.
I decided I would remain at ANC as long as the Honor Guard members were required to remain here. However, about 1500, Bolling AFB said they could come back to the base in their bus. I had been wondering how I would get home. I had used the Metro (train) which stops at the Pentagon one stop before Arlington and also at Reagan National AP, which was closed, just a couple of stops beyond the Pentagon. However by that time the Metro was running but simply by-passed those two stops.
We were to be on stand-by for any potential services required. However, I received no calls Tuesday night. The next morning, most federal work centers were asking for essential personnel only. We were to wait until notified about whether to come in to work. About 1000 I was asked to come to ANC in BDUs but to also bring Service Dress in case we were needed to make any death notifications. I dropped Sonja at the Dodge dealer to pick up our van which we had taken in for some repairs, then took I-395. The Arlington NC exit was closed and I had to circumnavigate around to Hwy. 1 to find another way to Arlington. As I exited, the final turn into ANC was blocked by cones... what to do... thinking I might look "official" in my BDUs I got out of the car and moved one cone enough for our Neon to slip through, only to find more barricades -- but enough space to slip through. Even though I had my Arlington Official Vehicle Pass displayed, I was stopped and asked where I was going and why...
After lunch, our three chaplains drove to the area of ANC across from the damaged portion of the Pentagon. The highway section was closed and we walked across to the area now fenced off with controlled access. The whole length of this side of the Pentagon was crowded with tents, fire trucks, emergency vehicles, red cross vehicles and a large lunch wagon, Salvation Army lunch wagon, and people... so many people... fire-fighters, Army, Navy, AF personnel who were volunteers or who had official duties. The Media was kept in a location back across the highway where they were out of the way surrounded by many portable towers to send their signals.
We had seen two light poles that had been hit by the approaching plane, but I was surprised there were so many others untouched. I looked at the blackened, gaping hole and just could not visualize a huge airliner flying so low, nose hitting the ground just before the building and then crashing into the structure. There were just no signs of any aircraft visible, only the blackened stone of the building with emptied windows. Most of the glass had been shattered, but there were a couple with the glass melted and sagging, but still intact. Some firemen were on the roof, and a flag had been raise on a flag pole on the roof. (Later they hung the large one on the building that you may have seen on the news.) A large crane was there waiting to begin removing some of the debris.
We were expecting to take a shift at the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing tent at 1500 - 1900, but were told our shift would be 1900 to 0700 instead (which changed again and we were not needed.) We walked around the area. Some volunteers wore white disposable coveralls with gray booties over their combat boots. Many were just waiting to begin search and recovery work. There was food and water in abundance -- no problem there -- thanks again to the concern and generosity of people and organizations.
I just kept staring at the portion of the building trying to put things together in my head. There was nothing much recognizable other than possibly some of the layers of floors. Just to the left of the collapsed portion there is a control tower for the helicopter pad. There was no damage to the tower and someone was still manning it. It was mind-boggling to think that the person who manned it Tuesday had full and total vision of the plane coming in and crashing! We talked with a Major from General Jumper's office. The good news was that they did not know of any missing AF personnel at that time. However he also gave us the number of remains that had been found to that point... mostly Army.
Today, Arlington NC returns to a somewhat normal schedule. The band and honor guard will be allowed to travel from Bolling and support the services.
Through it all, it has been amazing to see how many of you were concerned for our welfare. Thanks! How wonderful to know that so many care, even after many have been so far away for so long. However, my part has been easy and safe. If I had gone to visit that morning, I most likely would have been in another part of the building, unless lost - which does happen with frequency!
The only thing that was hurt was my heart. Being so close, it is so real that one cannot help but grieve and fight back tears from time to time. I am thankful that our government and leaders will not act rashly, but will seek to be wise and just in any response. However, I would encourage you to pray that other Americans would also control their anger and reaction and not unfairly assume that any Arab is a villain. Most are innocent and do not deserve to be the brunt of our frustrations. Pray for them.

I was supposed to have been going to the Pentagon Tuesday morning at about 11:00am (EDT) and was getting ready, and thank goodness I wasn't going to be going until later. It was so shocking, I was listening to the news on what had happened in New York, and just happened to look out the window because I heard a low flying plane and then I saw it hit the Pentagon. It happened so fast... it was in the air one moment and in the building the next... ?M.J.02001/02/28I'm sorry that I couldn't post sooner, but my systems are finally available this morning after the events yesterday here in Washington DC.  I was in the Pentagon east parking lot, heading to a meeting in the wing, where the jet crashed into the building.  I had been in meetings since 7:30 AM at U.S. Treasury and headed directly to another set of meetings at the Pentagon set for 10 AM.  My group (4 of us) was unaware of the happenings in New York but knew something was wrong when we saw the jet coming down the freeway, and watched it crash.
Helpless, was our feelings.  We couldn't do anything.  Since no one in our party of four was military personnel we decided we better head back to our buildings in downtown Washington.  An hour later we found our offices closed down and were sent home.  I walked 5 miles before I was able to get on the Metro (subway).  We're all back in the offices this morning but waiting word from our counterparts at the Pentagon. We believe that some of our project team were killed in the attack but waiting for official word.
I'm grateful to be alive and so blessed by the Lord protection.  We had missed our shuttle so we were late.  I'm also grateful that I had the MGB or I won't have been able to walk any of that distance to get myself to safety. We are secured in our building today.  The DC Police has sealed the two blocks around our building behind police line tapes.  We could only get in if we proved we worked in the buildings and no cars are permitted in the parking lot.  But work must go on.

?Steve02001/09/14I am alive and feel lucky, I was about 1/2 mile away. Everyone was on edge because of the WTC crashes, some were talking of leaving. I saw the jet just before it crashed. Something big and silver, nose down going aimed like a dart straight into it. The fireball was huge, 10 stories high and our building shook hard. Everyone in our two towers ran to the fire escapes. Most not knowing what exactly was happening.
I had more fear because I saw what happened. Had visions of jets flying into the buildings in Pentagon City. It was comforting to finaly see the fighters arrive 10 minutes later.

2001/09/11Like millions of people in this shocked nation, Deb Anlauf spent Tuesday morning staring in disbelief at a TV screen, watching smoke billow from the World Trade Center in New York City.
Then, at about 8:40 a.m. CDT, the largest terrorist action in this country's history hit closer to home for Anlauf and her husband, Jeff.
The couple, who moved to Colfax from Australia four months ago, were at the Sheraton National Hotel in Arlington, Va., less than two blocks from the Pentagon when Deb Anlauf saw "a sight I never imagined I'd see."
Anlauf was watching TV coverage of the Trade Center burning shortly before 9:30 a.m. when she decided to return to her 14th-floor room from another part of the hotel. Once in her room, she heard a "loud roar" and looked out the window to see what was going on.
"Suddenly I saw this plane right outside my window," Anlauf said during a telephone interview from her hotel room this morning. "You felt like you could touch it; it was that close. It was just incredible.
"Then it shot straight across from where we are and flew right into the Pentagon. It was just this huge fireball that crashed into the wall (of the Pentagon). When it hit, the whole hotel shook."

Artman, now a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve and the engineer for the city of Winter Haven, was in Washington attending a conference. About 9:45 a.m., as he walked with a friend near the Washington Monument, he saw a plane fly low over the city. That wasn't unusual. Planes fly low over the city so often no one pays any attention to them, said Artman. But this wasn't just any plane. "I saw the plane that hit the Pentagon,"
he said. "It went behind some trees." Then he saw the smoke from the Pentagon.
"It was hysteria -- cops, unmarked cars were everywhere," Artman, 44, said. "People were standing around. Nobody knew what was going on. As soon as I saw the Pentagon catch on fire, I thought, 'it's time to go."' Artman and his friend went to the nearest Metro subway stop.
"We went underground," he said. "They closed everything down. The response by everyone was absolutely instantaneous. Nobody knew what might happen next." The two men spent the next two hours trying to get back to their hotel. They didn't bother trying to catch their afternoon flight back to Florida. Instead, they rented a car and drove back to Florida.
"We got a car and drove forever," he said. A licensed commercial airline pilot, Artman said he won't be flying again any time soon.
"I just don't trust the security," he said.
Artman said he understands anger people may have because this happened on American soil. But he warns against allowing anger to lead to rash attacks against Middle Eastern people living in the U.S. "You don't want to go back and retaliate in the same manner that they did this. That brings you down to their level," he said. Artman said he has every confidence there will be swift, just retaliation by the United States military, when it's determined without a doubt who is responsible for the attacks.

WS: I am not a conspiracy theorist, but that Sudan press conference you were on your way to was going to be a very significant moment in drawing attention to what people call a holocaust or genocide that has taken place by Muslims against Christians in Sudan. Did it ever cross your mind that the timing of the attacks could have been linked to this press conference?
GB: I didn't think about the linkage, but I did think it was ironic that we were going to Capital Hill to try to pressure the Bush administration to impose some really tough economic sanctions on Sudan. It was going to be a big press conference. Probably 50 groups involved, so it is too bad that it didn't happen, but I don't think that press conference was directly related to those events that day.

On the Colin Powell issue, almost every time in our history when we are at war, there has been splits within the governing administration. There is a split in the Bush administration, Vice President Cheney and Secretary Rumsfeld tend to be in the branch of the administration to be tough and firm and want to fight this war, and not the way we fought Vietnam, with one hand tied behind our back. Powell, unfortunately, is in reality in much more of a peacenik. When I was in the Reagan administration, Colin Powell fought adamantly to get out of Ronald Reagan's famous Berlin speech the most important line, which was: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” Powell said it would insult the Russians and Gorbachev. After a weeklong battle the President finally just told him it's a closed issue. Reagan said, “That is why I am giving this speech, to say that line.” Colin Powell was the one that talked them into not finishing the Gulf War and taking Sadam Hussein out of power. Now we are bedeviled by the fact that Hussein is still there and I think now Powell is now more interested in building this coalition with some countries. That makes no sense in my view than he is in prosecuting the war to a successful conclusion so I have been a critic of him.

It disappeared on the other side of the building, and I heard and felt a large crash. Bease ran back inside to tell his co-workers that a plane had crashed into the building. Once everyone was out and accounted for, he and other Marines worked their way toward the crash site to help pull out the wounded.
By day's end, he would be covered in blood and sweat -- the beginnings, he believes, of the rumor that he had died.

All of a sudden I heard an airplane coming from behind me, it was very loud and very low. It's very unusual to see a plane in that particular area because the Ronald Reagan Airport, which is not very far away from the Pentagon, is where most of the planes in that area land but they would be kicking a different route. I looked out of the windows of my car to the left and up, and I didn't have to look very far up, and I saw this big American Airlines jet going by and heading down towards the ground and I remember shouting to no one, as I was alone in the car, “That plane is going to crash!” It disappeared behind the bridge, I heard the thud which sounded like artillery fire, and I saw a big black puff of smoke come up.
Many of the cars on the highway in front of me stopped, someone actually tried to turn around and go the other way; I pulled my car over to the side and ran down under the bridge toward the Pentagon and as I emerged from the other side of the bridge I saw a big fire and black smoke coming out of the building and people running out. There were police officers pushing people running toward the building back. I stood there watching what was going on as this unfolded. A firetruck had been already pulled up, because there was a firetruck adjacent to the Pentagon that was always parked there, and it was already spraying water. This is basically what I saw in the aftermath of the event.
Undicisettembre: Can I ask you a silly question? Are you positive it was an American Airlines jet?
Richard Benedetto: It was American Airlines, sure as heck! Yes. That plane was very very low.
Undicisettembre: How long did you stay there in the afternoon? Were you able to go to work afterward?
Richard Benedetto: I stayed there the whole day. I immediately made a call to my office, cellphones were still working at that moment, and they told me to stay there, so I continued to stay there until 6:30 that evening. Then eventually I got into the Pentagon because they held a press conference. The Secretary of Defense, who was Rumsfeld, and the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services, Mr Levin, held a press conference, I think to show that the building was still functioning. We reporters were escorted in there through the corridors that were still smoking, you could smell the kerosene fumes from the jet fuel.
Undicisettembre: What did you do in those hours between the incident and when you went into the Pentagon?
Richard Benedetto: We were all situated by a gasoline filling station across the street which was a station that was used by the Pentagon vehicles only, it was not a public filling station. We were there and many people from the Pentagon came out and briefed us from time to time, mostly military officers.
Undicisettembre: The next question is inevitably about the size of the hole in the face of the Pentagon. Some people say it was too small for an airliner. What's your opinion about this topic? Did you get a good look at the hole before the section of the building collapsed?
Richard Benedetto: I couldn't see the hole itself because there was a lot of smoke coming out of it, as the day wore on the smoke cleared and I could see the hole after the collapse. But I never questioned whether or not the whole was big enough for an airliner.
It was only a while afterward that I heard someone said it wasn't big enough and some people came out with those theories, especially with the theory of the plane coming from the North.
Undicisettembre: What's your opinion on the many conspiracy theories regarding 9/11 and specifically the Pentagon incident?
Richard Benedetto: Since I saw the airplane and I saw it happen I know what my eyes told me: it was not faked. If it was fake, where did that airplane that I saw go?
Undicisettembre: What are your feelings about conspiracy theorists?
Richard Benedetto: There are conspiracy theories about everything, from the JFK murder on. Some are more plausible than others, this particular one makes no sense to me. I don't understand what people think was the purpose in that particular case.
Undicisettembre: Most of the conspiracy theorists, at least in Italy, now seem to believe that an airplane hit the Pentagon but it didn't fly the route the official version says it followed, but flew further north (see this image: the blue line is the official path, the yellow line is the North Path). Based on your experience, I guess you can rule out this crazy idea, right?
Richard Benedetto: The plane was definitely coming from the west. It followed the blue line in the picture you showed me.
Undicisettembre: Have you ever met any conspiracy theorists and tried to debate them?
Richard Benedetto: No, I haven't.
Undicisettembre: While you were there at the Pentagon was anyone having doubts about the fact that a plane had hit the Pentagon?
Richard Benedetto: There was no doubt being expressed among either the reporters or people from the Pentagon we were talking to or eyewitnesses. We did interview people who had been in the building who came out and talk to us while we were in that designated place, we talked to a number of people who were in the building at the time of the crash. None of those that I interviewed said that they saw the airplane itself, but they felt the impact of the plane, saw people who had been thrown to the ground, saw people being injured. They were all pretty shocked themselves.
Undicisettembre: That's an interesting point. You made interviews with people who came out the Pentagon. What can you tell us about them?
Richard Benedetto: They were very nervous and very shook up, very shocked. People who were working there were sent home, so some were just wandering around without knowing what to do. They were wandering around endlessly, some of the metro system was not working, some were waiting for somebody to come and pick them up. It was a chaotic situation, but as a reporter you always try to talk to the people who might have been closest to it, so we did interview a lot of folks who were in the building."

BerganSusan02001/09/11Susan Bergen was sitting in a hotel room near the Pentagon on Tuesday morning, glued to TV news coverage of the World Trade Center attack.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a plane outside the window of her 11th floor room. She turned just in time to see a big jetliner skim the treetops and slam into the side of the Pentagon, less than a half mile from her hotel room. It looked like the plane sped up just before hitting the building, she said.
“The next thing I saw was this ball of flame,” said Bergen, who had accompanied her husband Joe, chairman of Sajar Plastics Inc. in Middlefield, Ohio, to a Society of the Plastics Industry Inc. board meeting at the Ritz Carlton at Pentagon City hotel. “I just kept saying, `This can't be happening.' ”
Bergen was stunned. She went to the hallway, grabbed a maid and told her to come to the window. The maid kept giving her water to comfort her, and Bergen said she was struck by the need to go find her husband. She and Joe were celebrating their 41st wedding anniversary, and had exchanged gifts that morning.
“To look out my window and see that was more than I could take,” said Bergen.
Bergen recounted the story sitting in a lounge in the hotel that afternoon, as SPI board members and staffers milled around, dissecting events and trying to cope. The group made comparisons to Pearl Harbor, and some said they felt the hotel shake like an earthquake when the plane went down.
Soon after the crash, the building and streets around it, an area of high-rise buildings and an upscale mall known as Pentagon City, filled up with people fleeing the Pentagon. People coming into the hotel were in tears, military personnel filled the streets and helicopters were circling overhead.
After regrouping, some SPI officials and board members tried to continue meeting. Some said they had not seen TV reports, and from interior rooms of the hotel, could not tell how severe events were.
Then, about 11 a.m., the hotel got word that there was another airliner 20 minutes outside Washington that air-traffic controllers could not communicate with. That marked the end of the meeting, which began Sept. 10 and was supposed to run through Sept. 12.

012001/11/16"I just looked up and I saw the big nose and the wings of the aircraft coming right at us and I just watched it hit the building," Air Traffic Controller and Pentagon tower chief Sean Boger said. "It exploded. I fell to the ground and covered my head. I could actually hear the metal going through the building."
Sept. 11 started out as a normal day in the Pentagon control towers. The crew, Boger and Spc. Jacqueline Kidd, air traffic controller and training supervisor, prepared for President George W. Bush to arrive from Florida around 12:30 p.m.
"We were watching television and saw where the World Trade Centers were hit," Boger, a former Military District of Washington and Fort Belvoir NCO of the year, said.
Kidd knew that the Pentagon would immediately heighten security after the attack in New York, so she decided to get her lunch out of her car while she still could.
Before she left, Boger said to Kidd, "I'm surprised no one has ever flown into the Pentagon," Boger said to Kidd before she left, referring to the fact that so many planes fly around the Pentagon daily. He was talking about an accident, not a terrorist attack.
"Keep your eyes on the planes," Kidd said jokingly leaving the office
"There was no time to think," the tower chief said. "There wasn't time to be scared." Kidd was on her way out to her car when the plane hit. Luckily, Kidd stopped by the restroom before going to her car.
"They got us," Kidd said her first thought was. "The lights went out and the ceiling fell in on me," she said. Kidd returned to the bottom of the tower and tried to get to Boger. The stairs were covered with debris and the ceiling had fallen in around him.
"I don't know how I got out, but I got out," Boger said. Boger got to the bottom of the tower and was still not sure what was going on.
"I grabbed [Kidd] and we both fell to the ground," he said. "We looked back."
"What happened?" Kidd asked.
"A plane just flew into the Pentagon," Boger responded.
The first thing the two noticed was that both of their cars were on fire. Kidd was the owner of the infamous Grand Cherokee that ended up resembling a station wagon and Boger owned the totaled 3000 GT that was shown for weeks worldwide on news broadcasts. Boger said he kept waiting for people to start running out of the building, but he only saw a few security officers running out, yelling to get away from the building. Both air traffic controllers walked around the building and saw where people were grouping. He said about 15 minutes later people were starting to take charge.
"A few guys were talking about pulling bodies out," he said. "They were asking for 20 medics, nurses or doctors." It was then that Boger said he realized there would be mass casualties.

"I saw the plane at the Navy Annex area," he said. "I knew it was going to strike the building because it was very, very low -- at the height of the street lights. It knocked a couple down." The plane would have been seconds from impact -- the annex is only a few hundred yards from the Pentagon. He said he heard the plane "power-up" just before it struck the Pentagon. As soon as it struck the building I just called in an attack, because I knew it couldn't be accidental," Bright said. He jumped into his police cruiser and headed to the area.
As he drove to the site, he reported what he was seeing to the DPS command post. He saw people streaming from the building and stopped to help. "One lady was burned and I brought her to the cruiser and helped her," he said. But Bright's responsibility as the first officer on the scene was to report what was going on. He also had to assess the damage, check to see if chemicals were part of the attack and check the perimeter to ensure the plane was not merely the opening move in an attack on the nation's military headquarters. He directed people stopping on nearby Highway 27, which parallels the damaged wall, how they could help. Pentagon workers also pitched in to help the injured. "I have great thanks for those people, because most people would have been in shock," he said. He also called for ambulances and fire trucks. All the while, he also kept his eye on the sky, because by that time the command post had received reports of a possible second plane.

01Captain Joseph Candelario, USA a first year student in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program began Tuesday, 11 September like most people. It was a clinical day, which meant getting up early and making the trip in to Ft. McNair to start seeing patients at 0630. He was first alerted that the day was drastically changing when one of the medics told him that a plane hit the World Trade Center. While watching the tower burn, another plane hit the second tower. “Thinking that this was a very serious terrorist attack, I went outside to the river to take a break. As I was looking across the river towards the direction of the Pentagon, I noticed a large aircraft flying low towards the White House. This aircraft then made a sharp turn and flew towards the Pentagon and seconds later crashed into it. I returned to the clinic to hear our radio contact from the clinic in the Pentagon calling for more help and supplies. We made immediate preparations to leave one doctor, nurse practitioner, and a medic at the clinic to receive possible casualties while I, along with three medics, would take supplies to the Pentagon.” Upon arrival the team distributed the supplies and assisted with the few remaining casualties not yet treated. Since the wounded were taken care of, CPT Candelario and his medics joined a Search and Rescue team.  Upon entering the impact site, the team conducted a search of the area, surrounding corridor 5 and 6.  They were able to free a few people still trapped by debris. Unfortunately, as they continued the search, they found many body parts and around six burned corpses. Unable to proceed, the fire was too hot, they set up a rally point near the front of the aircraft and waited for the D.C.F.D. to put the fire out.  What they did not know was that fire would burn for over a day. After waiting a few hours, they pulled back to the center courtyard and began to set up the morgue, remaining on site until 1930 hours. CarrollSusan02002/09/11"I was standing on the platform high above the [Washington Reagan] airport awaiting a Metro subway train to my office in the heart of the district, on Constitution Avenue, admiring the lovely blue skies when I saw the plane hit and the fireball and explosion at the Pentagon. At first, I didn't believe what I saw. At about the same time, the train approached the platform, and I remember turning to a fellow passenger and asking, 'What should we do?' His response was to get on the train and I followed. As we went underground and approached the Pentagon station, the engineer came on the speaker and told us of a 'situation' at the Pentagon and signaled us to evacuate the train. What followed were four days of chaos, cell phones not working, inability to get home (to Jacksonville), finally securing a hotel room which overlooked the smoldering fires in the Pentagon. Being alone, with limited contact with family and friends, was a very frightening time, but also a time to reflect on how fragile life is and how special each day and moment are to me. I finally was able to get on a flight on Friday from Dulles Airport to Savannah. I met up with some good Samaritans who offered me a ride home to Jacksonville in a shared van. The experience was unforgettable, but one which caused me to pause, to decide to live in the moment, and to remember the importance of family and friends in times of chaos and confusion, and to draw deep into my inner strength and on faith to get through trying and terrible times. About 9:30, I was in the left-hand lane of the HOV, kind of looking down on the Pentagon. I was looking at the roof, wondering if I would see guys on the roof with binoculars, just looking. I didn't see anybody up there, so I just kept cruising along. The Pentagon was on my left, and I saw this plane. I heard it, and it scared the piss out of me. It was so loud and throttled-up. I saw it come over the road, and it was like parallel. I could see thewindows go by. Some of the shades were down, others were open. And it was close enough that it felt like if there were people in there, I would have seen faces, but I couldn't see anything.
You could tell how the pilot, he really kind of maneuvered the plane. The plane kind of banked side to side. He got over the parking lot and he just dipped it down, and you could visibly see the plane dive. It went below the highway and I couldn't see the actual impact, but the explosion was just massive and the fireball just towered over the Pentagon another 100 feet. You could feel the heat from the blast. The smell and the heat just came all over you.
I slammed on the brakes and pulled over to the side of the road, and I hopped out and grabbed my cell and called Pickering Chief of Staff Susan Butler. The receptionist said she was sitting there talking to somebody, and I said get her on the phone now. And so Susan picked up, and I said, "A plane just crashed at the Pentagon, get out of the office now." And she hung up and told people to evacuate. I tried to call my wife, who's an elementary counselor with the Fairfax County schools. I got her voice mail and said, "Please be careful today. There are a lot of weird things going on. I'm fine. I'll call you later."
I hung up and looked across at the Pentagon. You could see there was furniture on fire. The smell was very strong. It was noxious, like when you are behind a diesel truck, that kind of acrid smell.

And this looked like it was coming, from, I’m guessing, coming down Columbia Pike in Arlington, down that way, and then just picked up a high rate of speed, I mean from my desk right now I can see, the Pentagon, basically where the metro station is, and the buses, I can see that and to the right, but I can’t see the, I guess, the south parking area.

Andrea: Don what’s the reaction of others in your office? I mean watching the world trade center and then seeing this right, literally, in your own backyard
Don: Well myself and another coworker who sits beside me, both of us were actually on the phone looking out the window when it happened and we both dropped the phone, and we picked it back up, and said we got to go, it looks like somebody…there’s been a plane crash at either the airport or the Pentagon.

ChuJimmyManager of the VDOT Smart Traffic Center 02001/09/21Stunned, some VDOTers were viewing a television replay of the second airplane crashing into the WTC. Jimmy Chu, manager of the VDOT Smart Traffic Center (STC) in Arlington, and several of his staff were watching, too. Then, at 9:37 a.m., Chu and other STC employees heard the window-rattling noise of a fast-approaching aircraft. It was close -- much too close!

The hijacked plane was coming up Columbia Pike, unbelievably low. It exploded into the Pentagon seconds after nearly skimming the rooftop of the Smart Traffic Center.

Madelyn Zakhem, executive secretary at the STC, had just stepped outside for a break and was seated on a bench when she heard what she thought was a jet fighter directly overhead. It wasn't. It was an airliner coming straight up Columbia Pike at tree-top level. "It was huge! It was silver.
It was low -- unbelievable! I could see the cockpit. I fell to the ground.... I was crying and scared," Zakhem recalls.
Two seconds later, perhaps three, as Chu looked out his office window, he saw a hijacked plane explode into the fortress-like walls of the Pentagon on the plain just below him. STC staffers remember a loud thud, then a terrible explosion, and then a fireball burgeoning from the core of America's military power.
In the STC, however, employees continued with their duties while thinking that the nation was under attack and that more explosions would follow. While everyone in or near the center heard the plane, not everyone saw it, and some thought the plane was the first missile in a missile attack.
Knowing that they might be a military target, scores of people began evacuating the Navy Annex directly across the street from the STC.

Told to evacuate, traffic controllers stayed at their posts, even though a second terrorist plane was reported on the way, and some thought a missile attack was under way.

Nevertheless, when emergency officials came with loud speakers, telling everyone to evacuate, traffic operations director Suliman told them that VDOT would not evacuate until they were ordered to do so by military authorities or state police. At the same time, rumors were every where that another terrorist's plane was only 30 minutes away and headed for the area -- then 20 minutes... then 10 minutes. "We thought about it, and we stayed. That's not to say we weren't afraid," remembers Chu.
Similarly, Marilyn Taylor, STC operations manager, "Don't think we weren't afraid. But we stayed. Our STC staff maintained their work stations and continued monitoring cameras and working with the Navy, even when there were rumors the second plane was coming. They never got up."
Knowing that offices in the Washington area would likely be closed and that a massive evacuation would begin, Mark Hagan, smart traffic signal manager, implemented special traffic management strategies. HOV lanes were reversed and opened up to all traffic heading south on I-395 and I-95. The district's state-of-the-art traffic signal system was quickly moved into its "July 4th" mode to allow for the maximum traffic flow out of the D.C. and Pentagon areas for those heading south and west to safety. Arnold Nelson, interstate maintenance manager in Northern Virginia District, and his team played a key role in mobilizing maintenance forces, providing required equipment, and implementing required lane closure plans. Contractors' crews were told to stop work on roads in the region.

At the STC, several VDOT safety service patrollers immediately went to the Pentagon to see if they could be of help, offering assistance, giving directions, and sometimes words of comfort to personnel coming out of the Pentagon. "They were asking 'What is happening?' and there was concern for family and friends; but there was no panic," recalls Pete Todd, safety service patrol operations manager.

Traffic center staff helped the Navy set up an emergency center in the STC building. "VDOT went 100 percent" to support the Navy, says an observer.

Meanwhile, at the STC, Jimmy Chu told an officer from the Navy Annex that the center would offer the Navy computers and telephones to help restore communications. In short time, the center's conference rooms and several offices were filled with Navy personnel, including several admirals, who set up communications and command centers -- which facilitated Navy personnel checking with area hospitals to determine where survivors of the crash had been taken. VDOTers at the center turned over desks, telephones, and computers to the Navy and furnished office supplies of any kind needed, and coffee.
Shortly into the crisis, the FBI called the STC to report that children from the Pentagon daycare center were sitting out on the Pentagon lawn and to ask if VDOT could offer them a safe place to go. Harry "Junior" Woodard, Columbia Pike AHQ superintendent, invited authorities to bring the kids -- several dozen of them -- to the maintenance headquarters next to the STC. They and their caregivers came -- with blankets, fold-up beds, mattresses, diapers, etc. STC personnel helped them move in. Parents, learning later where their children were, picked up the youngsters throughout the day. VDOTers bought pizza for the children as well as for Navy personnel in the STC.
A VDOT consultant at work in the STC when the crisis began asserted, "VDOT went out 100 percent to support the Department of the Navy!"

VDOT districts gear up for action. Culpeper Tiger Team travels to the emergency.

Meanwhile, VDOT districts geared up. Culpeper District sent a Tiger Team of 42 members to Northern Virginia along with 17 changeable message boards, 12 crash cushions, and 475 traffic cones. Staunton District put crews on alert, but they were not needed. Fredericksburg safety service patrol members joined their counterparts in Northern Virginia to assist traffic flow with emergency signage and detour information. VDOT units and contractors supplied lights to the crash site at the Pentagon to assist in the nighttime recovery work. Hampton Roads VDOT personnel assisted state police in inspecting all commercial truck traffic going through area tunnels. Other VDOTers provided roadblocks and secured entrances to nuclear power facilities.
VDOT's Transportation Emergency Operation Center (TEOC) in Richmond continued to assimilate and distribute information to VDOT and other government units and to answer telephone calls from citizens inquiring about road closings and conditions. VDOT's Office of Community and Public Relations supplied continuous updates to the news media, and the office's Web site staff prepared constant updates for the department's Web page.
A group of employees in Central Office (and probably other places) offered prayers throughout their lunch period for the injured and missing and for those involved in rescue work. Thankfully, there were no casualties among VDOT employees.

Governor Gilmore and others thanked VDOT. Commissioner Nottingham commends employees for remaining calm and acting professionally during crisis.

On the evening of the fateful day, Gov. Jim Gilmore visited the STC to meet with and thank VDOT employees for a job well done. In a letter to VDOT team members on Sept. 12, Commissioner Charles D. "Chip" Nottingham wrote that "September 11, 2001, will go down in history as one of the darkest and saddest days in our nation's history.... Words will never be able to express the collective sense of shock, outrage, and grief that we all share."
The Commissioner praised the many VDOT employees and offices who managed the transportation system in an efficient way on Sept. 11 "so that transportation problems in Virginia were virtually non-existent and that travel information was relayed to the public quickly." He added his thanks for "remaining calm, acting professionally, and helping VDOT lead the way in our Commonwealth's response and recovery efforts."

"If I had been on top of our building, I would have been close enough to reach up and catch it," Madelyn Zakhem, an executive secretary in the Smart Traffic Center (STC) in Arlington, said two days after the terrorist plane rocketed directly over her.
In the final few seconds before the terrorist-commandeered plane exploded into the Pentagon, the plane roared down on Columbia Pike, almost skimming the roof of the STC after barely missing the Sheraton Hotel. The noise, VDOT team members said, was unbelievably loud, and most felt the hijacker was nosing down the plane at full throttle. "It was so close the building was shaking," recalls Jimmy Chu, STC manager.
Some VDOTers were sure the plane had shifted its direction slightly to avoid a 100-foot-tall cellular tower adjacent to the STC building. As the plane went over the STC, the hijacker banked the plane, lifting the rightwing up, in order to swoop down the hill into the target.
Just before impact, the plane clipped off two VDOT light poles on Washington Boulevard, a football field or two away from the Pentagon. In the same area, the blast from the plane's impact damaged the lenses of one of VDOT's traffic monitoring cameras and knocked the camera sideways. Days later, VDOTers still could feel the awesome closeness of the doomed plane to the STC. The tangled wreckage down the slope, slightly more than half a mile away, graphically portrayed the intent of the brutal and barbarous monsters at the controls.

012001/09/12As former Cincinnatian James R. Cissell sat in traffic on a Virginia interstate by the Pentagon Tuesday morning, he saw the blur of a commercial jet and wondered why it was flying so low. Right about the time it was crossing over the highway, it kind of dawned on me what was happening, said Cissell, son of Hamilton County Clerk of Courts Jim Cissell.
In the next blink of an eye, he realized he had a front-row seat to history, as the plane plowed into the Pentagon, sending a fireball exploding into the air and scattering debris - including a tire rim suspected of belonging to the airplane - past his car.
"I've been in life and death situations before ... You can't count your thoughts. It was very surreal. It wasn't slo-mo. It was surreal. I think I was in kind of a state of shock," Cissell said.A former photojournalist who, for the last three years, has worked for the Freedom Forum Museum in Arlington, Va., Cissell was listening to his car radio and the news of the planes slamming into the World Trade Center while sitting in traffic.
"I was thinking, 'If anything happens to the Pentagon right now, I don't have my (photo) gear with me," he said today.
He usually cuts through the Pentagon parking lot to get to work, but was stuck on Interstate 110 because of extra security at the Pentagon following the attack on the World Trade Center.
"Out of my peripheral vision," Cissell said, "I saw this plane coming in and it was low - and getting lower."
"If you couldn't touch it from standing on the highway, you could by standing on your car." In the next seconds dozens of things flashed through his mind.
"I thought, 'This isn't really happening. That is a big plane.' Then I saw the faces of some of the passengers on board," Cissell said.
"I remember thinking, 'The World Trade Center was just the beginning, there's going to be more.' "He remembers the helipad the plane flew over before smacking into the Pentagon was close enough to him that "I could have thrown a baseball at it and hit it."
Then the plane, which was taking out telephone and power lines on its way in, hit the building. While he remembers seeing the crash, Cissell remembers none of the sounds.
"It came in in a perfectly straight line," he said.
"It didn't slow down. I want to say it accelerated. It just shot straight in."

Mr. Cissell drives past the Pentagon every day on his way to work at the Newseum in Arlington, Va., where he heads its Web site.
Tuesday morning, he called his wife on his cell phone to let her know he was OK, and he pulled away after being told to clear the road. It wasn't until he got to work that he began to see the extent of the destruction.

I recently read your book "The Final Mission: Spooky 8". Had I known it existed I would have read it a long time ago. I know that you personally do not care whether a reader believes your story or not, but I would like you to know that I Personally believe what you have written for the most part. I,unlike yourself do not have any past history with Special Ops, but I do have a pretty keen mind for the way that our Government(Note:Don@specop2 didn't spell this correctly either) works as a whole.
I just wanted to tell you that I Loved your book and was able to read it in 3 days time on the mertro rail here in DC. I honestly believe that your book is probably one of the best I have ever read. I do prefer Non-fiction over Fiction, so I more than likely will not be reading your second book.(I hope you don't take offense to that.) I think you're a great Author and a soldier deserving respect.Whether people believe your story or not.
I was also stationed at Fort Sill OK. 133rd Ord.Co.(I had a 111 GT score which would have allowed me to go else-where, but my MOS was needed there(MLRS-Repair/Maint) I will also add that I knew atleast 3 other people with GT scores of above 120 whom I served with on active duty while there.) I know this is a long e-mail, but I would also like to tell you a little info on the Septmber 11th terrorist attacks which occured as you know not far from where I am writing this to you now. I live in Woodbridge VA.(I'm sure you are aware of the geography) I was on my way into work on the 11th. Riding the metro-rail from Springfield VA. to DC.. I had just gotten off the phone with a close friend of mine who let me in on the details of the World Trade Center incidents which had taken place a few moments earlier. I was approaching the national airport stop, when I looked off to the right(I was facing backwards on the train)When I saw a large jet approaching Crystal city.(I was one of very few people that actually saw the Plane at the pentagon prior to its actual impact) I noticed that it's flight pattern was different than others I had come to recognize over riding the rail for many years. I knew that it was not headed for a landing strip. I actually had to look over my shoulder to see if I was mistaken and I unfortunately realized all too soon that I was about to witness one of the most historic moments of our lifetime. I watched as the plane disappeared behind the line of buildings that make up Crystal city and watched as an incredible mushroom cloud appeared on the horizon. I shouted HOLY SHIT!!! as the other passengers looked at me I pointed out the window to let them know what had happened. That is when it all set in and everyone realized what happened.No one else on my Car had seen what I saw. The reason I am telling you this is because the details of this one crash were not accurate from what I witnessed first hand and what I have gathered from others whom I know, saw what I saw. Soon after the crash(Within 30 seconds of the crash) I witnessed a military cargo plane(Possibly a C130) fly over the crash site and circle the mushroom cloud. My brother inlaw also witnessed the same plane following the jet while he was on the HOV lanes in Springfield. He said that he saw a jetliner flying low over the tree tops near Seminary RD in Springfield, VA. and soon afterwards a military plane was seen flying right behind it. I think this was also a reason for the false threat of another plane about to crash which caused rescuers to have to evacuate for a short time after the initial crash. I have done my research onthis and according to time magazine it took 24 minutes before Norad was supposedly notified about this particuliar jet and fighters were scrambling to intercept at that time.
Isn't it odd how there is Not a single mention of this aircraft in ANY of the articles written about this crash? Also if you had not noticed... There is not a single picture or live footage of the actual jet prior to its crash at the Pentagon.Nor is there any of the one that crashed in Pennsylvania. But if Anyone who rides the metro-rail knows, there are plenty of Video cameras all around National airport at the parking Garages and the high level security buildings found all around Crystal city. (3 of which I have personally found pointed directly towards crystal city which would have given a great line of site shot of that jet prior to the crash as well as any other plane which might have been following it. I personally believe that the government new full well that this was about to happen and they are hiding something a lot bigger than they are willing to let out. I was interviewed at Washingtonpost.com and gave them my full story, but they did not print it as I have told you. I also find it interesting that one of the planes engines in the pennsylvania crash was supposedly found 5 miles prior to the crash site(This information I'm unsure of). The only thing that I'm aware of that might cause that would be a heat seeking missle. A weapon which I am pretty familiar with form Ord.training. I'm not saying that the government new exactly what was about to happen, but I do believe that they are definitely hiding something here. Many of my friends in intelligence have said the same. I work in a Gov. building in DC., but my heart is right there with you and your team.

2001/09/11While an employee held the collapsing ceiling in place, Pentagon police Officer George Clodfelter and his colleagues were the first to plunge into the smoke and debris to find survivors in those minutes after the crash. They pulled out employees whose clothes had melted, some covered with debris, burns and blood. They saved dozens of people as the building started collapsing around them.
"I heard people screaming," Officer Clodfelter recalled. "The fuel and debris were raining down on us. The smoke was so thick, we couldn't see."
Since then, Officer Clodfelter and Officers David Webster, Mark Bright and Arthur Rosati say they are still shaken by an event no amount of training could prepare them for. But they say they must keep working in order to fulfill their duty to protect the Pentagon especially in case of another attack.
"I was shaken and at one point, I couldn't look at the crash site anymore," said Officer Clodfelter, 45. "But I have a job to do and I am going to do it."

"That maintenance man, I wish I knew his name. He was a real hero," Clodfelter said. "The first out was a young mother. She passed me her 4-month old baby."
A Pentagon worker named Kirk Hamlet came up and helped.
"I went back and got another individual out," Clodfelter continued. By then, a crash truck parked next to the heliport was on fire. He told Hamlet and his partner that they had to work faster. Hamlet and Clodfelter were pulling out another woman when the truck exploded. "(My partner) pushed me down," Clodfelter said. "He saved my life."
The three evacuated another woman and then, after the maintenance man managed to move away some debris, rescued a man who'd suffered third-degree burns on his hands and forearms, Clodfelter said.
"When I reached down to haul him out, some of his skin came off. His hair was still smoldering so I put that out, and his back was burned," he said. "We got him away, and then all hell broke loose. We couldn't go back in after that." (...)
Rosati went out a different entrance and met Clodfelter. "He had this astonished look on his face, and he just looked at me and said, 'This is insane.' He had blood all over his shirt. I hugged him and said we had to get out."

CookScott P.02001/09/11My office is located on the fifth floor of the Portals building, at 1280 Maryland Avenue SW, Washington DC. It’s the southernmost building at the end of 14th Street, right at the Tidal Basin and Maine Avenue.
There was a more-than-routine crisis going on in the office that morning. We had been asked to respond to OMB comments on our FAIR Act Inventory, and the short turnaround required me to constantly gig our various deputy directors and office chiefs to get their responses. My boss Ray, agitated about the pressure he was getting from the deputy administrator, had already bugged me a few times about it, and at 8:30 asked me to send another email to everybody. I could only send the email from my coworker Donna’s machine, since she had done the report initially and the long complicated mailing list was stored locally on her computer. She was due in at 8:30, but was running late.
So I was pacing around the office, faxing something to Phil White in the IT Division and generally charged up waiting for Donna. She showed up at 8:58, and I quickly got into her machine and sent the email. I went back to my office and printed out the responses we had received so far so I could tell Ray who was still delinquent.
At about 9:18, Ray charged by my office, head down, a scowl on his face. "C’mon," he growled, and headed for the conference room. I figured we had received a tighter deadline, or something had gone wrong with the report, and Ray was going to have one of his sit-downs with me to go over it.
The conference room was empty, and as usual I was drawn to the view outside the big wide windows. It was a beautiful day (everyone remarked on it later), a deep blue sky, no clouds at all, low humidity and crisp temperatures. Just outside to the right was the Jefferson Memorial, dead center in the window was the Pentagon, and Reagan Airport sprawled to the left. It was the same view as in my office, and I couldn’t remember it ever being so crisp and lovely.
Ray, without a word, crossed to our 20" TV and turned it on. We had for some reason never gotten around to getting cable installed to the room, so we could only get a few commercial channels. Ray pushed the button to advance the channels, and stopped when he got a clear picture, on Channel 7.
We both gasped. On the screen was a live helicopter shot of the twin towers of New York’s World Trade Center, smoke streaming from both of them in the aftermath of obviously large explosions. Peter Jennings was describing the events so far, and in a few minutes they showed a tape of a plane, a big twin-engine Boeing, smashing into the second tower.
It was an unbelievable, surrealistic sight. The plane, going full out at about 400 miles an hour, crossed the screen from right to left, disappeared behind the first tower, and exited the second tower in a shower of flame and debris. Verle, my fellow section head, had joined us, and we stared openmouthed at the screen, exclaiming in obscenities.
I went into my office and called home to tell my wife Laurel to turn the TV on. At some point, Jennings stated the obvious, that this was some kind of terrorist plot. I turned to the conference room window and started looking around. Laid out in front of me was a terrorist’s delight – Reagan Airport, the Pentagon, the roof of the Lincoln Memorial thru the trees, and reaching up from the top of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the Washington Monument.
I mentioned to Ray that perhaps we should keep an eye on the scene. If they were hitting New York, we might be on the list.
For the next 15 minutes or so, we alternated between watching the TV and the landscape. I could see no changes in the air traffic out of Reagan, still landing from the south and taking off to the north. In the almost three years we had been in the Portals building, I had watched hundreds of takeoffs and landings, and had developed a real eye for the oddities, planes off the beaten track, at the wrong altitude or speed, things out of the ordinary.
That’s what I was looking for out the big picture windows. It seemed reasonable that Washington would be on any terrorist’s list of targets, but I never thought that we would really see anything. I assumed that the twin attacks in New York were at the outer limits of any terrorist organization’s logistics.
I had just scanned the sky and the scene one more time, and turned to Ray. We were talking about the need for a swift response to this attack (we were already talking about bin Laden) when Ray leapt to one side, his face instantly animated beyond anything I had ever seen.
"They just hit the Pentagon!"
I turned. Rising up from the right center of the Pentagon’s mass was a gigantic spherical orange mass, the flames oddly bright and vivid in the clear direct sunlight. I stepped to the window, and instinctively put my hand to the glass. Verle and Ray were quickly on either side of me. A few seconds after the explosion, the glass rattled and a dull boom shook the room.
I yelled, "Jesus Fucking Christ!" and the others yelled other things. The room seemed full of sound suddenly. Some people rushed in in response to the sound, then oddly left again.
Within seconds, the orange fireball had dissipated, replaced with an angry black plume, instantly bending to the southeast in the prevailing wind. I literally could not believe what I was looking at. To expect a bizarre, outrageous event like this, and then to see it happen, is literally the stuff of nightmares. The only similar experience I could compare it to was the Challenger explosion, when I actually believed that if I looked at the tape enough times and really concentrated, it wouldn’t blow up this time.
We didn’t know what kind of plane had hit the Pentagon, or where it had hit. Later, we were told that it was a 757 out of Dulles, which had come up the river in back of our building, turned sharply over the Capitol, ran past the White House and the Washington Monument, up the river to Rosslyn, then dropped to treetop level and ran down Washington Boulevard to the Pentagon. I cannot fathom why neither myself nor Ray, a former Air Force officer, missed a big 757, going 400 miles an hour, as it crossed in front of our window in its last 10 seconds of flight.
(The more I’ve thought about it since, the odder the choice of the Pentagon as a target appeared. The Pentagon is a huge pile of concrete, the walls over a foot thick, and no plane is big enough to do more than superficial damage to it. Had the hijackers chosen to dive into the Capitol or the White House, much smaller sandstone buildings with little internal framework, the damage and the death toll would have been infinitely higher. Both houses of Congress were in session, and in addition Laura Bush was in the building, preparing to testify to some committee about school reading programs. I guess the symbolism of the Pentagon was more important to the terrorists, who blamed the US military for everything, much like Chomskyites blame everything on the CIA. As horrible as it sounds, the hit on the Pentagon may have been a blessing.)
As we watched the black plume gather strength, less than a minute after the explosion, we saw an odd sight that no one else has yet commented on. Directly in back of the plume, which would place it almost due west from our office, a four-engine propeller plane, which Ray later said resembled a C-130, started a steep decent towards the Pentagon. It was coming from an odd direction (planes don’t go east-west in the area), and it was descending at a much steeper angle than most aircraft. Trailing a thin, diffuse black trail from its engines, the plane reached the Pentagon at a low altitude and made a sharp left turn, passing just north of the plume, and headed straight for the White House.
All the while, I was sort of talking at it: "Who the hell are you? Where are you going? You’re not headed for downtown!" Ray and Verle watched it with me, and I was convinced it was another attack. But right over the tidal basin, at an altitude of less than 1000 feet, it made another sharp left turn to the north and climbed rapidly. Soon it was gone, leaving only the thin black trail.
The TV was still talking about the World Trade Center for the next ten minutes, and we kept waiting for the news of the Pentagon to show up. Out the window, road traffic continued, but immediately the sky emptied of planes. Almost simultaneous with the Pentagon attack, the FAA shut down the air traffic system across the country. It would be a long time before planes flew in or out of Reagan again. ABC reported that some planes may still be unaccounted for.
At about 10, we were half-watching a view of the second tower, when an odd fuzzyness caught my eye. An edge of the building seemed to be crumbling, and it appeared that the camera was zooming in to take a closer look. It took a second to realize that the camera was stationary, and the blooming was due to the immense cloud of debris caused by the building as it pancaked and literally disintegrated.
Right after the Pentagon hit, Ray yelled out the door that anyone who wanted to leave the building was welcome to do so. Portals had been evacuated, but in such a dumb slipshod fashion that few of us knew about it. There was never a building-wide announcement, but we could see scores of people standing around on the plaza in front of the building, watching the Pentagon pyre. I figured I was safer in the building than out, especially (an morbid thought) if the bastards nuked Washington. Within a half-hour of the hit, Ray and I were the only ones left in the office.
The TV mentioned a few times that the bridges leaving Washington were closed, but the two that ran by our window, the Case and the George Mason, were never closed that I could see. Considering the wholesale rush of everybody to get out of town, the traffic never clogged up and gridlock never happened.
Also around 10, the TV was talking about reports of a car bomb at the State Department when we heard and felt a tremendous explosion, much louder than the Pentagon. I assumed that the Capitol, the only iconic Government building not in view from our window, had been hit. All morning, I had been thinking about the last chapter of Tom Clancy’s Debt of Honor, where a Japan Air pilot slammed a 747 into the House of Representatives during a joint session of Congress. I took off on a dead run to find a window looking east. I was afraid to leave the building, since they might not let me back in, and I wouldn’t be able to follow things on the television. I ran down to Civil Rights, but all the windows faced north. Still running, not finding a single person still in the building, I made it all the way down to Chris Reagan’s office until I remembered that a concrete firewall separated Portals from Portals II, and there was no way I could see the Capitol without going outside. Panting like an idiot, I made my way back to the office to await the news on the TV.
The explosion was never mentioned, and it remained a mystery for over a month. I finally read an account of the Pentagon attack in the Washington Post which discussed the air defense response. Before the Pentagon attack, fighter jets were scrambled from Langley, 200 miles south of DC. Trying to get to DC before any of the stray jetliners attacked, they hit Mach 2, leaving a rolling sonic boom all the way up Virginia to the Pentagon. When I was a kid, camping in the Mojave Desert, I heard sonic booms all the time, but it had been so long since jets have been allowed to go supersonic over land, I didn’t recognize the sound any more.
Ray and I continued to watch the developing news, watching with numbed shock as WTC 1 collapsed around 10:30. The notion that the slow, almost balletic collapse and the blooming dust cloud covering lower Manhattan contained the death of thousands of people was such an abstract concept that it could not be grasped for hours.
Around 11, Ray decided to leave. He gave me his bag lunch, and after he left I ate his ham sandwich and cookies, the only person left in the building. The TV reported that a fourth plane had crashed in the Pennsylvania countryside, but it was not known if there was any connection.
As much as you hate to admit it, there is a visceral thrill to events such as this. In my life, the Kennedy assassination sprang to mind, such a jolt to the national psyche that even at age 7 it made a lasting impression on me. The Challenger explosion and death of Princess Diana were similar. But the scope and breadth of this event was incomprehensible. Watching the continuing coverage, and pondering the events, I broke a cardinal rule and lit up a cigar in the building. Soon, my little cloud of smoke mixed with the lethal one outside the window.
The whereabouts of the President became an issue. We had seen him live as he announced the attack at an elementary school in Florida, and he was then whisked away to Air Force One. Since then, there had been no word. About 12:30, I saw some activity in the air and went over to the window. A small private jet, white with no markings, was making a landing at Reagan from the south, and flying just off his left wing was an F-16. The private jet touched down and taxied to the terminal, and the F-16 kicked in his afterburner and leapt up, making a sharp turn to the west. As he did, he was silhouetted briefly on the gibbous moon over the Pentagon, the only honest-to-God beautiful thing I had seen all day. I guessed that maybe the plane was the President sneaking into Washington.
Finally at 1PM, I decided to try to get home. Taking one last look at the Pentagon plume, which waxed and waned in intensity all morning, I headed down Maryland Avenue with the vague notion of seeing if any slug drivers were left. I immediately realized the error of my theory as I reached 12th Street. Not a car, a bus, a pedestrian was in sight in any direction. Any number of 1960s apocalyptic stories sprang to mind, mostly Bob Dylan’s Talking World War III Blues ("Well, I seen a Cadillac window uptown/There was nobody around/I got into the driver's seat/And I drove 42nd Street/In my Cadillac/Good car to drive …after a war.")
After seeing no drivers, I decided to take a risk and ride the Metro. Laurel was convinced that nerve gas in the subway was the next phase, but I thought that if they were going to do that, they would have done it a few hours earlier when the system was more crowded. I took the escalator in the courtyard of the DOT building at 7th and D and rode the Blue Line up through downtown and under the river at Rosslyn. The PA announced that we would not be stopping at the Arlington Cemetery or Pentagon stations. We did zoom through those stations, the Pentagon platform ominously empty.
I eventually arrived at the Springfield/Van Dorn Station, the end of the line. I took me a while to orient myself, and it took me over an hour to pick my way up offramps and across highways to get to Frontier Drive. All the stores on Frontier – Home Depot, Old Navy, Borders – were closed and the parking lots deserted. The only open business was TGI Fridays. Across the road, Springfield Mall was likewise locked, only 20 or so cars in the huge lots. It took me another long while to find a way through the mixing bowl construction and finally get to my car in the Springfield Plaza parking lot. The contrast between the deserted streets and the beautiful fall weather was eerie.
I didn’t get home until 3:30. After greeting everyone, the first thing I did was open a bottle of Laphroaig and take a stiff drink. Then I didn’t move from the TV until after midnight.

Directly in back of the plume, which would place it almost due west from our office, a four-engine propeller plane, which Ray later said resembled a C-130, started a steep decent towards the Pentagon. It was coming from an odd direction (planes don’t go east-west in the area), and it was descending at a much steeper angle than most aircraft. Trailing a thin, diffuse black trail from its engines, the plane reached the Pentagon at a low altitude and made a sharp left turn, passing just north of the plume, and headed straight for the White House.
All the while, I was sort of talking at it: "Who the hell are you? Where are you going? You’re not headed for downtown!" Ray and Verle watched it with me, and I was convinced it was another attack. But right over the tidal basin, at an altitude of less than 1000 feet, it made another sharp left turn to the north and climbed rapidly. Soon it was gone, leaving only the thin black trail.

CreedDan02002/09/06An airplane flying overhead still startles an Ahwatukee Foothills man a year after he witnessed a hijacked American Airlines Boeing 757-200 slam into the Pentagon.
"We were the only people, we think, who saw it live," Dan Creed said.
He and two colleagues from Oracle software were stopped in a car near the Naval Annex, next to the Pentagon, when they saw the plane dive down and level off.
"It was no more than 30 feet off the ground, and it was screaming. It was just screaming. It was nothing more than a guided missile at that point," Creed said.
"I can still see the plane. I can still see it right now. It's just the most frightening thing in the world, going full speed, going full throttle, its wheels up," Creed recalls.
The crash killed 125 people on the ground and another 64 passengers and crew members on the plane. It also caused about $800 million in damage.
"I wouldn't be honest if I didn't tell you that things like it really make you think about the value of life," Creed said. Once back in his Ahwatukee Foothills home, Creed remembers he had to think hard about traveling.
"I knew I had to sit back and come to terms with traveling again because my livelihood was traveling at that time. I sat down and went through some soul searching about traveling, and I said in my mind something like this could have happened a long time ago and I wasn't going let it affect my life. I was back on an airplane in two weeks," Creed said.
His first trip was back to Washington, D.C.
"I tried to bury my head in a book. I took four books with me on that flight because I was going to read. I didn't listen to the pre-flight instructions or anything, I just sat there reading," Creed said with a laugh. The effects of Sept. 11 stayed with him, including nightmares. But he has a new appreciation for life. Counseling helped eliminate the nightmares and Creed has spent more time with his family. He left California-based Oracle in August, not because of a fear of flying, but because "I was traveling so much I didn't have a life. I was gone all the time."
He now spends more time with his wife, children and grandchild. He also started his own technology consulting firm, Mr. Lucky Consulting Inc. He's still wonders why he happened to be where he was that day, with a clear view of the plane slamming into the Pentagon.
"Why were we chosen to sit there and watch that day? What am I supposed to do with it?" he still wonders.

2001/11/01When a hijacked Boeing 757, skimming the street lights, smashed into the Pentagon on September 11, firefighters at nearby Reagan National Airport were the right responders in the right place with the right equipment.Being among the first responding fire units, National's aircraft rescue firefighters (ARFF) crews were able to set up their apparatus directly in front of the gaping hole in the Pentagon. That was where their training in fighting aircraft fires and the capability of their foam units to extinguish jet fuel fires were put to the best use. The ARFF foam units knocked down the bulk of the fire in the first seven minutes after their arrival, said Captain Michael Defina, who was the shift commander that day at National.

While Captain Defina and his crews were watching the World Trade Center attacks on television at the ARFF station, they were dispatched to the motor vehicle accident. Although the airport, located in Arlington, Virginia, was not on alert, Captain Defina said he had a feeling Washington, D.C., could be another terrorist target. "Normally, the shift commander doesn't respond to motor vehicle accidents,'' he said. "But something didn't sound right about it." Captain Defina was the shift commander that day because the battalion chief was across the river in Washington for a security briefing on an upcoming meeting.  Defina responded to the vehicle accident in the battalion chief van, along with Rescue Engine 335, under the command of Captain John Durrer, and a medic unit.

At the accident scene, where a driver with a diabetic reaction had struck several vehicles, the firefighters were working with their backs to the Pentagon. "I heard a dull roar. The noise didn't belong with the noise you were used to hearing within the airport," Captain Defina said. "I turned and saw a smoke plume arise." As he and Rescue Engine 335 responded toward the Pentagon, there was confusion from the control tower in an alert of a "missing 757." Initially, it was thought to be another crash, possibly at the end of the runway or on nearby George Washington Parkway. But it was quickly confirmed the crash was at the Pentagon, and Captain Defina ordered a response by one of National's crash rigs, Foam Unit 331, and SERV-329, the mass casualty/disaster unit, from the now-closed airport. Arriving two to three minutes later at the Pentagon's south parking lot, Captain Defina saw heavy smoke and heavy fire to his left on the building's west side.
"I sat there for 15 seconds wondering what was coming next," he said. "I knew it wasn't an accident."

"The initial fire was extremely intense, but I expected the intensity," he said. As recently as 1999, National had conducted a mass casualty disaster drill with a live fire on an airplane simulator and the rescue of victims from a simulated fire in a terminal. And, Captain Defina had given a presentation on mass casualty incident response at the ARFF Working Group's 1999 annual conference. Mass casualty units SERV-329 and SERV-362 are equipped to handle about 150 patients each. "A lot of military medical personnel arrived and looked to our mass casualty units for direction," Captain Defina said. "It was the first time the military was dealing with our mass casualty units and it worked
out to be a well-coordinated effort."

From the photo and diagram above, it appears that the crew of Engine 161 are seen entering the Pentagon's heliport side entrance (shown in the diagram at bottom center). Engine 161 is just left of the entrance. The gap in the Pentagon wall after the collapse of its roof would be on the right - just off the photo.

"While Foam Unit 331 hit the fire with foam from its roof and bumper turrets, Unit 335's four-person crew used hand lines in an attempt to control the fires".

Was the "plume of smoke" that Captain Defina saw from the crash of Flight 77, or from the bombs reported inside the Pentagon at 9:32?
The debris seen in the photo of Unit 161 above, and the "slab deflected upward," are consistent with an explosion inside the Pentagon.
At the Dept. of Defense News Briefing on September 12, 2001, when asked about the "small pieces of the plane virtually all over, out over the highway, tiny pieces", Arlington County Fire Department (ACFD) Chief Ed Plaugher responded, "I'd rather not comment on that." Neither Flight 77 nor Boeing 757 were mentioned during the news briefing.
Why was Plaugher being evasive? Was he trying to hide the presence of ACFD Engine 102 and 107 (seen in the photo below) at the Pentagon?

Questions about what hit the Pentagon on September 11, continued to be raised at the Dept. of Defense News Briefing on September 15, 2001. Neither Flight 77 nor Boeing 757 were mentioned during the news briefing.
The Arlington County After-Action Report confirms the presence of Unit 161 at the Pentagon prior to impact (page A-4):
Captain Dennis Gilroy and his team were already on station at the Pentagon when Flight #77 slammed into it, just beyond the heliport. Foam 161 caught fire and suffered a flat tire from flying debris. Firefighters Mark Skipper and Alan Wallace were outside the vehicle at impact and received burns and lacerations. Recovering from the initial shock, they began helping victims climb out of the Pentagon's first floor windows. Captain Gilroy called the Fort Myer Fire Department, reporting for the first time the actual location of the crash.
What do Captains Defina and Gilroy, and firefighters Mark Skipper and Alan Wallace know about what happened at the Pentagon?
ACFD Engine 102 and 107, and MWAA Unit 331, are not mentioned in either the Arlington County After-Action Report or The 9/11 Commission Report.
In yet another attempt to cover-up what happened at the Pentagon prior to the alleged strike by Flight 77, officials have removed the time (9:37 A.M.) of the alleged strike from the Pentagon Memorial.

Once he realized what had happened and regained his composure, Donley remembered that he had his camera with him. His first reaction was that he could not photograph the scene, but then he thought he must. He managed to pull to the side of the highway jammed with rush-hour traffic, stop, get out of his car, and use his camera with a zoom lens to capture the Pentagon in flames, within about three minutes of the attack.”

He would have had to cross over the median raced back through “heavy traffic,” stopped, regained his composure, and then snap the still-mushrooming pyroclastic fireball.

This in fact is Donley’s requiem. He can't hide behind the label of "amateur," when the route his pictures took to get in Life magazine and the collection of the Library of Congress, while bypassing the FBI, is itself newsworthy, especially when real photojournalists were being placed in handcuffs by the FBI when they got too close to the action at the Pentagon on 9-11.

(DoD Briefing Q: Around that side of the building where the fire is and where the fire fighting's going on, I would appreciate it if you could intercede on behalf of the FBI to make sure reporters are allowed into a certain area there and allowed access in there so -- and not being threatened or, in fact, handcuffed and dragged away, that reporters do have an area close to the action where they won't necessarily interfere with things)

He was passing the building the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, when he saw a jetliner fly over the roadway. It filled his field of vision. The jet was 40-feet off the ground speeding toward the Pentagon.
“The wheels were up and I knew that this plane was not heading for National Airport,” he said. “This plane was going to slam into the Pentagon. I steeled myself for the explosion.”
The blast froze traffic on the highway. Mr. Dubill got out of his car. At first he wondered if he should go to the Pentagon and help the injured.
“The panic was palpable,” he said.
Minutes later he watched ambulances and police cars stream toward the smoking building. He realized the best way he could help was to bear witness. Mr. Dubill drove over the highway median and headed into work.
Mr. Dubill recently retired as executive editor of USA Today. He was one of five Pulitzer-Prize winning St. Bonaventure University graduates who shared their 9/11 stories with the campus Wednesday.
The Pulitzer is journalism’s top honor. It was the first time all five Pulitzer winners returned to the Russell J. Jandoli School of Journalism and Mass Communication as a group. All were trained by Dr. Jandoli, the department’s founder.
Mr. Dubill and fellow Pulitzer winners Dan Barry, John Hanchette, Charles Hanley and Brian Toolan spoke to a group of more than 200 in Dresser Auditorium of the John J. Murphy Professional Building. The symposium was part of St. Bonaventure’s 9/11 remembrance.
The morning of the attacks he was in San Francisco. The book tour was canceled. Mr. Hanley made his way to the Associated Press Office in San Francisco.
“Like Bob (Mr. Dubill) I couldn’t help in any other way other than as a journalist,” he said.
Mr. Dubill and Mr. Hanchette won Pulitzers for articles they wrote detailing the financial dealings of the Pauline Fathers of Doylestown, Pa. Mr. Hanchette was nominated eight other times for the top journalism prize.
Mr. Toolan and his staff won a Pulitzer for coverage of the shooting of four Connecticut Lottery headquarters supervisors by a disgruntled employee.
Also Wednesday, Mr. Dubill was honored with an endowed scholarship in his name in the school of journalism and a bench/landscaping area on the St. Bonaventure campus. Both were funded by USA Today and its staff.

As we slowly crept along in traffic at about 9:30 am, we rounded a bend and had the Pentagon in our sites -- right in front of us. We continued to listen to the radio to take in the latest news on what was happening.
Riding in a convertable with the top down, I then heard a tremendously loud noise from behind me and to my left. I looked back and saw a jet airliner flying very low and very fast. It's amazing what can run through your mind in just a matter of seconds. As a pilot, I can't help but look at an airplane and think about airplane topics. What I saw sent a shiver down my spine as I realized something was not right.
The aircraft was so very low -- as an aircraft would be on its final approach to an airport. However, if you have watched any aircraft come in for a landing, even though the aircraft is descending, it is angled up slightly. This aircraft was angled downward. In addition, landing gear would also be visible on a aircraft so low and so near landing. This aircraft had its landing gear retracted. Finally, an aircraft on final approach is traveling rather slowly. This aircraft sped by very loudly and very quickly.
All of this flashed in my mind as the aircraft passed from behind my left shoulder to in front of me. It was then that the other events of the morning crystallized in the realization that tragedy was about to occur. With all of these images spinning in my head, the only words that came out of my mouth were "Oh no!"
With that, the airliner crashed into the Pentagon and exploded.

I work at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation near the White House. I headed north on 1-395 to DC from my home in Springfield, Virginia and I entered the highway a little after 9am so that I could take the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) express lane. As usual, traffic was very heavy and after I exited I-95, I found myself stuck in late morning rush hour traffic -- almost in front of the Pentagon. For most of my drive I had been totally focused on my radio and was extremely aware of the events that were unfolding in New York. Even though the radio reporters were cautious, I was already convinced from the first strike that it was not just an unfortunate pilot error. However, I felt that New York was under attack and I couldn't have imagined what would unfold in front of me.

Traffic was at a standstill. I heard a rumble, looked out my driver's side window and realized that I was looking at the nose of an airplane coming straight at us from over the road (Columbia Pike) that runs perpendicular to the road I was on. The plane just appeared there- very low in the air, to the side of (and not much above) the CITGO gas station that I never knew was there. My first thought was “Oh My God, this must be World War III!”

In that split second, my brain flooded with adrenaline and I watched everything play out in ultra slow motion, I saw the plane coming in slow motion toward my car and then it banked in the slightest turn in front of me, toward the heliport. In the nano-second that the plane was directly over the cars in front of my car, the plane seemed to be not more than 80 feet off the ground and about 4-5 car lengths in front of me. It was far enough in front of me that I saw the end of the wing closest to me and the underside of the other wing as that other wing rocked slightly toward the ground. I remember recognizing it as an American Airlines plane -- I could see the windows and the color stripes. And I remember thinking that it was just like planes in which I had flown many times but at that point it never occurred to me that this might be a plane with passengers.

In my adrenaline-filled state of mind, I was overcome by my visual senses. The day had started out beautiful and sunny and I had driven to work with my car's sunroof open. I believe that I may have also had one or more car windows open because the traffic wasn't moving anyway. At the second that I saw the plane, my visual senses took over completely and I did not hear or feel anything -- not the roar of the plane, or wind force, or impact sounds.

The plane seemed to be floating as if it were a paper glider and I watched in horror as it gently rocked and slowly glided straight into the Pentagon. At the point where the fuselage hit the wall, it seemed to simply melt into the building. I saw a smoke ring surround the fuselage as it made contact with the wall. It appeared as a smoke ring that encircled the fuselage at the point of contact and it seemed to be several feet thick. I later realized that it was probably the rubble of churning bits of the plane and concrete. The churning smoke ring started at the top of the fuselage and simultaneously wrapped down both the right and left sides of the fuselage to the underside, where the coiling rings crossed over each other and then coiled back up to the top. Then it started over again -- only this next time, I also saw fire, glowing fire in the smoke ring. At that point, the wings disappeared into the Pentagon. And then I saw an explosion and watched the tail of the plane slip into the building. It was here that I closed my eyes for a moment and when I looked back, the entire area was awash in thick black smoke.

I was not sure what to do next. Everyone started to emerge from their cars and, with looks of horror and disbelief, many began to beg for cell phones to call 911, to call family, or to call the story in to their newspapers. I continued to listen to the radio and everything was still about the events in New York. I was absolutely convinced that another plane was headed our way because there had been two planes at the World Trade Center and I felt that we were all sitting ducks on that road. I wanted the traffic to turn around. I didn't know what else to do so I got out of my car and ran back toward the highway yelling "Go Back! They just hit the Pentagon!" But of course, no one could move in any direction because traffic was at a standstill. A young woman in her 20's from the car in front of me was standing in front of my car and was visibly distraught and said she didn't know what to do. I told her that she was could come sit with me in my car for awhile and then I went to my car and started throwing everything from the front seat into the back seat to make room for her. I remember momentarily thinking that something was odd about the stuff as I tossed it back, but I didn't focus on it. Just then, a rather large man (from the regular traffic lanes) in a light tan military uniform bellowed to everyone within earshot. "Get Back In Your Car!!" So we did.

Then I became aware of people streaming out of the back side of the Pentagon and congregating on the sidewalks. It appears it was only a minute or two after the impact because they weren't yet looking at the crash site and seemed perplexed as to why they were outside. Perhaps only a few minutes lapsed from the actual time of impact to the time when someone was yelling at the traffic to "Go! Go! Go!" But it seemed like an eternity. As I began to drive, I heard a crunching sound (like driving on gravel) and I saw a piece of metal on the road about the size of a softball (it looked like a small conveyer belt-like roller with pins.) I remember thinking that I could puncture my tires - but in that same thought, I vowed to keep driving, even if I had to ride home on the tire rims. As the car moved slowly forward in traffic, I realized that I was still headed toward my office and I absolutely did not want to go there - my office is on Pennsylvania Avenue, just a few doors down from the White House.

So I made my way across the lanes of traffic and instead, I exited into the Pentagon's parking lot. I circled around to the right and came out under the road that I had just been on -- headed toward I-66 West. It was then that I realized that my car seemed to be shaking and I thought that perhaps I had punctured a tire. It also seemed that my car was moving extremely slow and that I might be stuck in 2nd gear. I looked down at the gearshift and confirmed that it was in "Drive". Then I looked up at my speedometer - and I was flabbergasted to find that I was traveling at over 80 mph and it felt as if I was not moving at all. My car tires were okay, but my little Dodge Neon was shaking because I never pushed it that fast before. I realized that I was still feeling the effects of the adrenaline rush and I forced myself to slow down.

As I drove, I remember being frustrated and thinking that everyone else on the road looked too normal and too unaware of the atrocity that had just unfolded in front of me. I turned off I-66 and when I reached the corner of Glebe Rd and Columbia Pike, I hear a terrible explosive noise (which I later was told was the sonic boom of our fighter jets). I thought it was evidence of another attack. Traffic stopped and people poured out of stores and cars and homes to look up to the sky. I turned on the radio to find out what happened, and heard that a WTC tower had collapsed. So I pulled over to the side of the road to catch my breath and sobbed for all the lives lost and for what seemed to me at that time like the beginning of the end. I turned south onto Columbia Pike and headed home - stopping once to attempt to use a pay phone, but all lines were busy. As I drove farther from the crash sight, emergency vehicles continued to zoom past me toward Arlington, Virginia and the Pentagon.

Bruce Elliott, former commander of the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant who was reassigned to the Pentagon in July, watched in horror Tuesday as a hijacked 757 airliner crashed into the nerve center of the U.S. military command.
Elliott, in a phone interview Wednesday, said he had just left the Pentagon and was about to board a shuttle van in a south parking lot when he saw the plane approach and slam into the west side of the structure.
"I looked to my left and saw the plane coming in," said Elliott, who watched it for several seconds. "It was banking and garnering speed. I felt it was headed for the Pentagon."
Elliott, whose office is adjacent to the building, had been in the Pentagon on business. Along with hundreds of others, he had just been ordered to evacuate the building after the attack on the World Trade Center in New York.
"We were aware of what had happened in New York City," Elliott said. "The security here is good, but it was increased."
The colonel, now assigned to an Army inspections office, said that as the plane zeroed in on the building, he began thinking about the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
"It was like a kamikaze pilot. I felt it was going to ram the Pentagon," he said.
He said the craft clipped a utility pole guide wire, which may have slowed it down a bit before it crashed into the building and burst into flames.
"It took out a large section of the west wing of the building," Elliott said.
He said the scene immediately afterward was chaos, although "everyone acted calmly, responsibly" and medical teams arrived quickly.
He said that since the crash he has been following instructions and focusing on his work, "trying to stay out of the way, unless called upon to assist. I feel like I could help, but I haven't been called upon to do that."
He said the portion of the building that was hit served as offices for several of the military services, including the Army, the Navy and Marines, as well as civilians.
About 50 Army personnel and up to 50 from the Navy were unaccounted for, according to officials from the two services, along with an unknown number of civilian employees and passengers of the American Airlines jet.
The plane, Flight 77, left the Washington-Dulles airport bound for Los Angeles. It carried 49 passengers and six crew members.
Elliott said the rubble was still smoldering Wednesday morning.
He said he had received several phone calls from friends in Iowa. "That was reassuring," he said.

Dear Mr. Eastman,

I hate to disappoint anyone, but here is the story behind the photograph. At the time, I was a senior writer with Navy Times newspaper. It is an independent weekly that is owned by the Gannett Corporation (same owners as USA Today).

I was at the Navy Annex, up the hill from the Pentagon when I heard the explosion. I always keep a digital camera in my backpack briefcase just as a matter of habit. When the explosion happened I ran down the hill to the site and arrived there approximately 10 minutes after the explosion. I saw the piece, that was near the heliport pad and had to work around to get a shot if it with the building in the background. Because the situation was still fluid, I was able to get in close and make that image within fifteen minutes of the explosion because security had yet to shut off the area. I photographed it twice, with the newly arrived fire trucks pouring water into the building in the background.

The collapse of the building above area happened long after I left the scene. I was not even aware that that had happened until that evening when I watched the news. My photos were on the wire by noon.

That was the only piece of wreckage of any SIZE that I saw, but was by no means the ONLY piece. Right after photographing that piece of wreckage, I also photographed a triage area where medical personnel were tending to a seriously burned man. A priest knelt in the middle of the area and started to pray. I took that image and left immediately.

As I stepped onto the highway next to the triage area, I knelt down to tie my shoe and all over the highway were small pieces of aircraft skin, none bigger than a half-dollar. Anyone familiar with aircraft has seen the greenish primer paint that covers many interior metal surfaces that is what these shards were covered with.

I was out of the immediate area photographing other things within 20 minutes of the crash.

In short, I was there so quickly after the explosion that there was not time for anyone to "plant" this piece of wreckage and it would have been impossible for anyone to plant the thousands of shards on the highway without being noticed by myself or others.

The security guard saw I was pregnant, so he was being nice and he was chatting with me. At that moment I heard a plane and then a loud cracking noise. We both looked up into the sky and it hit the building at that instant. It was so loud it still echoes in my head when I think about it.
'Right before the plane hit the building, you could see the silhouettes of people in the back two windows. You couldn't see if they were male or female, but you could tell there was a human being in there. That's what shocked me more than anything else. I thought I was going into labour and I was holding my stomach trying to get out of there. I felt guilty because part of me wanted to stay and help, but I couldn't do it being pregnant.'

Then his radio started squawking news of a plane crash at the Pentagon. “I grabbed my radio, ran to my car and pulled on my bulletproof vest and headed toward the thick, black smoke billowing out of the sky,” he said. “Traffic was at a standstill, so I parked on the shoulder, not far from the scene and ran to the site. Next to me was a cab from D.C., its windshield smashed out by pieces of lampposts. There were pieces of the plane all over the highway, pieces of wing, I think.”
Firetrucks were already shooting streams of water on the fire, and rescue workers were struggling to spread out huge tarps on the ground to establish a triage area. “Victims were just running toward you,” he said. “I ran up to a EMS captain and asked for rubber gloves and started helping the victims to triage.” For some, he had to run close up to the building to get; others straggled toward him, winding their way past the emergency vehicles that were filling the south parking lot. “There were a lot of people with severe burns, severe contusions, severe lacerations, in shock and emotional distress,” he said. “I was carrying stretchers, holding IV bags, putting pressure on wounds, handing out bandages, if they could hold them themselves, anything they needed.” He had gotten emergency medical training from the police department. This day, he needed it all.
The burn victims were the toughest cases. “All you could really do it get them to a point of safety, have them lie down and tell them not to move until you could flag down a doctor or nurse,” he said. “Then things got really complicated, because we got confirmed reports of a second incoming plane. People started yelling, ‘There’s a second incoming, 20 miles out, inbound to us. So people started packing up what they could, and we ran.” Other police officials were told there were two to four unaccounted-for planes in the skies—so the decision was made to move the triage area back, off the grounds of the Pentagon, where some cover could be found. They settled on three lanes of road, under a concrete overpass, that had been shut to traffic.
“It was extremely difficult to move all those medical supplies and people. Supplies were just arriving when we got the warning,” he said. “And for a lot of the people in the original triage area, the realization of what was happening was sinking in, and they were scared. Some of them couldn’t move on their own, they had to be moved on stretchers.” About two minutes later, he said, “we heard two F-16s screaming over the Pentagon and circling,” Fortunato said. “We knew they were our fighter planes, and everybody breathed a sigh of relief. We felt safe. But it was an eerie sensation knowing that American war planes were in the air because we were under attack.”
Since the morning of the attack Fortunato has been back on site numerous times—usually as a evidence technician shifting through the tons of debris. Under the watchful eye of structural engineers, hundreds of police, fire, military and other rescue workers continue, in 12-hour shifts, to collect what they can from the blackened cavern. With body bags in tow, the workers search through the rubble by hand. “You’re looking for body parts, clothing, teeth,” Fortunato said. ” There’s so much debris, twisted metal, everything’s charred and pitch black. You have to go on foot with a flashlight, and you scan what you can scan. There’s lots of areas we can’t go into because they’re unstable. There are piles of concrete, desks, filing cabinets, duct work and ventilation pipes, all the things that can’t be incinerated.
“If you find some victim remains, you get down on your hands and knees and comb the earth, and place whatever you find in the body bag, including personal belongings and clothing,” he said. “If you see something else a little farther away, you assume it’s another victim, and you put it in a new body bag.” It’s not always easy to tell where one body begins and another ends, he concedes, or what’s human and what’s not. It’s a very painstaking process. You just look for whatever evidence you can, human or forensic evidence.”
A few bodies were found intact—”caught in an instant,” as one rescue worker put it. One woman was found at her desk, arms up protecting her face, charred to her chair, eerily reminiscent of the aftermath of Pompey. Two men were found in similar shape. But most victims were in pieces.
Fortunato says some rescue workers welcome breaks from this kind of work. Others volunteer to stay on the rotation. “People want to help,” he said. ” We had hoped to bring people out.” Since that’s not going to happen, he said. “We do what we do because that’s our jobs,” he said.

Her commute to the airport took her south on Route 110, in front of the parking lots of the Pentagon. As she approached the parking lots, she saw a low-flying jetliner strike the top of nearby telephone poles. She then heard the plane power up and plunge into the Pentagon.

Gaines pulled over and ran toward the fiery crash scene. Moving in as close as she could, Gaines helped direct people filing out of the wreckage to safety. Injuries ranged from smoke inhalation to severe burns. One man said both his arms were burned and he was blinded. Gaines told him to grab her ponytail so she did not touch his burned arms and led him to safety.

In the parking lot, Gaines identified herself to a military nurse and they established a triage area. Gaines went back to the hot zone to assist more patients. As Fire and EMS units arrived, Gaines was able to get equipment to help more people. After more than five hours, all viable patients had been treated and transported.

"He said, 'You'd better come in.' I got on Interstate 395 and saw the plane come in. I didn't see the actual impact, but 395 curves around the Pentagon, and I saw that plane coming in and said to myself, 'That plane is too low; it's going to crash.' I made no connection in my mind to the World Trade Center and heard nothing, but I saw the smoke come up.
I was there for two hours. In my car, I started to write some thoughts about what the president might say that night, and I sent them off to [presidential advisor] Karen Hughes, who eventually organized the whole thing.
And finally they turned us back around going the wrong way on 395. And I went home. I finally got in touch with my wife, who had picked up my son from day care. And there was literally no way for me to get in to the White House. [Highway] 395 was closed; the Metro was shut.
The next day, I got in as early as I could. I normally drive right past the Pentagon. One of the most memorable experiences I had was the smell of the Pentagon burning, that acrid smell. And I got a very strange feeling, that symbol of American power burning.
I believe it was the next day--it all blurs together--that the president immediately said we need to have a national memorial service. So I went in to talk to him initially about that speech. He looked at me when I came in--and I know now he said this to other people--but it was still amazing, he said, 'Mike, we're at war.' And he had a real sense of that from very early in the process. And that's a sobering experience; I'm not sure I ever thought I would hear that.
We talked about that speech, the National Cathedral speech, and what he wanted to accomplish. I had just one day to write it.
Watching him stand in the rubble with the megaphone in New York later that day really reinforced to me that presidential leadership is more than speech- making. It's a sense of moment. That day was a turning point in the history of our presidency, and to some extent the country.
In the White House now, the biggest difference is a difference in atmosphere. You know you are involved in an unfolding series of events that are important in the history of the country. In the normal period, before Sept. 11, it was hard to have that total story line in mind. There was always something new, some different challenge, some different piece.
Even though we still have a lot of day-to-day stuff at the White House, you know you are in an unfolding story."

Harrington was working on the installation of new furniture in Wedge One, when he was called out to the parking lot to talk about security with his customer moments before the crash.
"About two minutes later one of my guys pointed to an American Airlines airplane 20 feet high over Washington Blvd.," Harrington said. "It seemed like it made impact just before the wedge. It was like a Hollywood movie or something. Thank God all of our crew got out."
Cheryl Hammond was the person who called Harrington and his crew out into the parking lot. "I thought they'd put out an alert or something," Hammond said. "We saw the big American Airlines plane and started running."

The aircraft, looking to be either a 757 or Airbus, seemed to come directly over the annex, as if it had been following Columbia Pike - an Arlington road leading to Pentagon. The aircraft was moving fast, at what I could only be estimate as between 250 to 300 knots. All in all, I probably only had the aircraft in my field of view for approximately 3 seconds. The aircraft was at a sharp downward angle of attack, on a direct course for the Pentagon. It was "clean", in as much as, there were no flaps applied and no apparent landing gear deployed. He was slightly left wing down as he appeared in my line of sight, as if he'd just "jinked" to avoid something. After a few moments, Lt Gen Ron Kadish, Director of the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization entered the Secure Conference Room to pursue the day's activities and do real work. Accordingly, I and the other staff members all quickly exited the room, each commenting on the horrific sights, which had just been displayed in New York. At approximately 9:45am I entered the old office of my friend Gary Ramos', directly adjacent to the executive director. This office, with two nice windows and a great view of the monuments, the Capitol and the Pentagon was "good digs" by any Pentagon standard. This was the office I'd been sharing while working the BMDO reorganization. Being a beautiful sunny September day in Washington, and with a head full of the horror in New York, I walked in the office and stood peering out of the window looking at the Pentagon. I pondered the breaking events of the day, wondering what this world was coming to. As I stood there, I instinctively ducked at the extremely loud roar and whine of a jet engine spooling up. What instantly followed was a large yellow fireball accompanied by an extremely bass sounding, deep thunderous boom. The yellow fireball rose quickly as black smoke engulfed the entire Westside of the Pentagon, obscuring the whole of the heliport. I could feel the concussion and felt the shockwave of the blast impact the window of the Annex, knocking me against the desk.

As I regained my composure I shouted loudly, "holy shit, they've hit the pentagon." Having just witnessed the CNN coverage of New York, I realized immediately that we were under the same attack. People within the interior of BMDO executive suite, where there were no windows, began to move towards the windows to view the fireball. Mr. Snyder yelled for them to get back from the windows and for everybody to get out now. The scramble began.
Deborah and I, followed by Betsy Davis, Mr. Snyder's secretary, made haste towards the stairwell, and headed out the Arlington Cemetery side of the Navy Annex.

The movement of the military and civilian employees can only be described as akin to a "general quarters" call on a ship - people scrambled down the back stairwell. As I exited the BMDO command action, people were pouring out of the Navy Annex. Many individuals stopped momentary to gaze at the now billowing black smoke rising hundreds of feet over the Pentagon.

I noted several of the secretaries were positively in tears. Betsy asked to use my cell phone. As we ran I fumbled to find it, forgetting that I had it in the compartment of my attaché case. To a person there was the look of concern, if not the pasty look of disbelief and shock. Fire alarms were now sounding and in the distance we could hear the emergency vehicles coming up Columbia Pike. The rapid response was truly amazing. Here only minutes after impact, the rescuers were in full action. Military and civilian alike poured on the street adjacent to the cemetery.

The combined BMDO - Marine Corps personnel began to occupy the street along to the Navy Annex South entrance. On the ridge along the perimeter fence, Marines could be seen running and heard yelling to clear the street for the emergency vehicles. People began to seek refuge behind the automobiles. Small groups and clusters of people huddled and began to theorize about the impact at the Pentagon and the events in New York.

Deborah and I sat behind a vehicle with Rob Snyder, the purpose being to use the car a shield should there be a follow up attack. Rob noted, "our world has just been forever changed." Indeed it had. Within moments there was a very loud bang, which seemed to come from the direction of Henderson Hall. At least, all the heads turned towards Henderson. It is possible that this was a secondary explosion from the Pentagon or possibly an F-16 going supersonic, as they had just assumed combat air patrol above the Washington metropolitan area. After this loud report, a Marine gunny, the only one seemingly "in command" directed all military and DoD employees to cross the fence line and seek cover in the adjacent Arlington National Cemetery. People began to cross the dark stone fence and enter the cemetery; the stronger helped many of the ladies in dresses pull themselves over the wall. Once over the wall, I noted that we were on a ridge - essentially higher ground that the street level and thus more vulnerable to any blast effects and shockwave from a potential hit on the Navy Annex.
Thus, I recommended that my group go over the ridge so that there was "high ground" between the Navy Annex and us. The next moments were consumed by the efforts of all to get the precious cell phone call made.

Eventually, I got through to both my home and that of my parents. Having achieved the only connection, I had my mother to copy down the phone numbers of spouses and loved ones of those around me, so she could let them know that they were safe. We constantly scanned skyward with our "eyeball radar," noting the sound of every jet engine seemed to make us jump. Fortunately, the only aircraft noise was the crisp distinctive ripping sound was of Air Force F-16's or the roar and popping of the rotor blades of a Park Police UH-1 helicopter surveying the damage. The only large fixed wing aircraft to appear was a gray C-130, which appeared to be a Navy electronic warfare aircraft, he seemed to survey the area and depart in on a westerly heading.

The true irony of the Arlington Cemetery experience was that the granite memorial protecting me belonged to a World War II vet. Here 60 years later, our WWII men are still protecting us. Rather ironic. We spent the next hours in speculation, occasionally getting a tid-bit of news from someone who got a call through on their cell phone. It was so odd to see battle dressed Marines atop Henderson Hall - but comforting. Gathering around one large cemetery oak tree, an Air Force Colonel, chief of staff from the National Missile Defense Joint Program Office, walked up and told us the latest scuddle butt from Gen Kadish was to go home if we had transportation. After several hours passed, in an impromptu carpool, I made my way to Prince William County. The whole trip home we discussed our retaliatory theories of who'd we hit and how hard we'd hit them. One thing was clear on this ride, that between the military and DoD civilian's riding in this vehicle, there was a clear agreement - let's clean up and help our wounded and then go reek a devastation upon someone the likes of which hasn't been seen since 1945.

Ranke: when you saw it pass the gas station, which side of the gas station was it on, was it on the Arlington Cemetery or north side or else perhaps the south side, the other side?
Hemphill: you know it's hard to say, it looked like it went right over the top .....
Ranke: would you say, if you had to say it was leaning towards one side or the other of the gas station, perhaps a portion of the plane, did it look directly over the top or what do you think?
Hemphill: yeah, I'd say more towards the cemetery side.
Hemphill: I was just gonna say they-- anybody who was out and about in that area right then in that area would have had a great vantage point if they were at the gas station.
Ranke: Precisely. There's zero room for- for perspective error, because they're sitting right there on the property.  And they're just telling us hey, you know, what's-- where's this plane in relation to the gas station.  And they all said it was on the north side.  Obviously it was on-- if it was on the south side, um, it'd be pretty difficult for them to make that mistake, if not impossible, let alone all THREE of them to make that mistake.

2005/11/10Capt. Jim Ingledue, shift safety officer of the Virginia Beach Fire Dept, said Monday he found amidst the rubble at the Pentagon, two days after 9/11, the perfectly clean and unblemished California ID card of Suzanne Calley, 42, one of the alleged victims killed aboard Flight 77.
 
"I remember thinking it was highly unusual and strange to find a perfectly intact ID card amidst all that devastation," said Capt. Ingledue, a Pentagon first responder who arrived two days after 9/11 and spent a total of seven days in search and rescue.
 In a telephone conversation from Virginia Beach, Capt. Ingledue added the find was "so strange" he kept it in his pocket for an hour instead of immediately turning the evidence over to FBI agents like he was instructed.
 "When we arrived at the Pentagon, we were advised to turn over any personal effects or possible evidence immediately over to the FBI," said Capt. Ingledue, who admitted the find was unusual, but doesn't subscribe to any wild-eyed 9/11 conspiracy theories. "I kept this bit of evidence with me a little longer, I don't know why, but I guess I thought it was strange to find an ID in perfect shape when everything else around me was devastated."
 Capt. Ingledue said he arrived at the Pentagon abut two days after the fact, seeing body parts, airplane parts and other debris, but adding it was impossible to determine the exact type of airplane involved as well as if the body parts he saw came from passengers or from people killed inside the Pentagon.
 
"I have no reason to believe it wasn't a commercial airliner," said Capt. Ingledue. "I don't believe all those conspiracy stories and the stories people make up. I did see airplane seats and a corpse still strapped to one of the seats.
 "I also remember seeing a table with a number of dead bodies still sitting around it. In my line of work, you have to disassociate yourself from the tragedy and the only time I really think about it is every year on Sept. 11."
 Capt. Ingledue said finally this year on the anniversary of 9/11, he again recalled the incident, writing a note on a internet memorial web site dedicated to Calley, adding he was deeply saddened by her death while mentioning finding some of her personal belongings in perfect condition.
 Calley is survived by her husband, Frank, who lives in St. Martin, California, but he was unavailable for comment after numerous messages were left on his answering machine.
 Regarding the similarity of the unscathed passport and Calley's ID perfectly unblemished ID card, critics all along rightfully suspected Al Suqami's passport was an FBI hoax and now, without question, critics will be saying the same thing about the Calley passport.
 But even though the passport and the ID card had a snow ball's chance in hell of surviving the WTC and Pentagon meltdown, ABC News and the Associated Press quickly jumped on the story, with accounts running on September 12 and 16 of 2001, telling America essentially the passport discovery was proof positive Osama bin Laden's gang outfoxed the mighty U.S. military.
 In fact, whether the FBI/CIA actually planted the evidence never has been thoroughly questioned or investigated by the state sponsored press, perpetuating even further the incredible lies surfacing about the credulity of the official 9/11 story.
 Besides the passport, numerous other accounts of suspicious evidence have conveniently surfaced linking the alleged hijackers to 9/11, including two of Mohamed Atta's bags also found right after 9/11.
 Not only did authorities find the bags but they conveniently contained a handheld electronic flight computer, a simulator procedures manual for Boeing 757 and 767 aircraft, two videotapes relating to "air tours" of the Boeing 757 and 747 aircraft, a slide-rule flight calculator, a copy of the Koran, Atta's passport, his will, his international driver's license, a religious cassette tape, airline uniforms, a letter of recommendation, "education related documentation" and a note to other hijackers on how to mentally prepare for the hijacking.
 Again the state sponsored media jumped on the story, running in the Associated Press, Boston Globe and other papers in the weeks following 9/11, further perpetuating the government's 9/11 myth without even asking the obvious question:
 
"If the hijackers could pull off the perfect crime, fooling the entire U.S. military, how could they be so stupid and leave such incriminating evidence behind unless it was planted they and set up by the FBI/CIA/Mossad agents?"
 But now on top of all the other bogus, planted evidence comes Capt. Ingledue's rare find of the Calley ID card, this piece of evidence every bit as unbelievable as Al Suqami's passport and Atta's bags.
  Although Capt. Ingledue appears to believe the government story in light of his amazement to find the ID card, there are many other skeptics who point out the government account of the Pentagon crash as being filled with so many holes it might as well be a piece of Swiss cheese.

Michael James, 37, a Navy information technician watched in horror from his car Tuesday as an airplane careened off a helicopter pad and smashed into the side of the Pentagon, where he spends about half of his day.
"I was supposed to be in the Pentagon underneath all that rubble," said James, pressed into service directing gawkers away from a road leading to the compound. "If it would have happened 10 minutes later, I would have been down there." 
He is often in the lower Corridor 4 offices of the Navy telecommucations center around 6 a.m., but Tuesday he was away taking a physical fitness 
exam. 
"The plane came over the top of us and brushed the trees, " he said. 
"Then it looked like it hit the helicopter pad and skipped up and went right into the first and second floors."
His offices are in the general vicinity of where the plane crashed.
"No, I don't feel lucky because I still can't account for my people, six of them," said James, an Alameda High School graduate.

2002/09/11On Sept. 11, I was standing in a break room of an office . . . in downtown D.C., when I looked out the window to see an airplane descend into the side of the Pentagon, where the Navy offices where five friends and colleagues of mine were located. Twenty-four hours earlier, I had been in the Pentagon visiting those friends and others in the building.
As I watched the fireball and during the evacuation of Washington that followed, I can remember being overwhelmed by two things -- what can I do to help, and how never again would I leave a friend or loved one without telling them how much I cared for them. All over Washington, in the days that followed, I saw Americans helping in so many ways, giving testament that we are a great nation consisting of generous, caring individuals. But I truly learned that life can be lost at any moment, and that we must be grateful for every minute we have on this Earth.

My friends and I were in the middle of the parking lot, having left our morning class at the Arlington Career Center, as a big passenger jet flew right above the building behind the career center. I am used to hearing planes because I live next to Spout Run, but it was obvious something was wrong. I've seen planes land, and this one was going much, much faster. And we were like, "Oh, man." I said, "Holy shit, that plane's crashing." There was probably three seconds between the plane going under the skyline and then the rumble from when it hit the Pentagon. At first, there was a white, pinkish smoke. I actually had a camera in my car. I took a picture of the smoke, and then after a couple seconds, it started getting darker.
My friends got in their car and I got in mine, and we were visibly shaking. It was weird seeing that plane and looking in the windows and thinking, wow, the last few minutes of someone's life. I wonder now if I had seen anyone, or if maybe they had seen me. I can barely comprehend it. I was scared of the uncertainty; I never thought, "I am in danger." Instead, I was just stunned, shocked. The anxious, shaky feeling brought on immediately would not go away for hours.
In the car, I turned on the radio to see what they were saying. It was really weird to hear them talking about it, because they didn't really know. The guy was just getting the news and could only say that something just happened to the Pentagon. Just to hear him say that, and for me to know that it was a commercial jet. I could make out the AA, American Airlines, on the plane when it went by, easily. It was weird to be in the know more than the news. The event made me aware of how naive the American lifestyle was before. In Israel, stuff like that happens every day. It made me appreciate how safe we are, living here, and made me appreciate much, much more that this is not a daily occurrence.
