Oral Skills for Graduate Students

This cluster is designed to help non-native English Speakers to improve the English skills needed to be proficient Teaching Assistants (T.A.s). Students will practice oral & presentation skills, having effective communication with their students (i.e. holding office hours), and knowledge related to general American academic culture. This class will also include some general teaching pedagogy.

Cross-Cultural Discussion

This cluster will examine and discuss how a variety of topics and issues are dealt with by various countries and cultures from around the world. Students will be encouraged to share information about their home countries, as well as to consider others’ perspectives. There will be an emphasis on general English speaking, listening, and reading skills.

Creative & Communicative Writing

This cluster will use a variety of writing prompts, mostly creative, to help students improve their writing skills, including essay organization, brainstorming, and composition. The instructor will help students to apply what they learn to any form of writing that they may need to do, whether it be for academic, communicative, or other purposes.

This cluster will allow students to practice their English skills by analyzing and discussing pairints, poems, and short stories. Cooking with English

This cluster will help students to learn how to cook new dishes, both from America and other countries, while improving their English skills. Students should expect to be able to try a wide-variety of foods while also having the opportunity to cook and share their own. The meeting day/time and location is subject to change based on the interest and availability of students. Harry Potter English

This cluster will work to improve students’ English skills using a variety of Harry Potter movies, books, media, and fan-created works. Students can make their own butterbeer, get sorted into their Hogwarts house, and discuss major scenes in the books/movies, all while working on their English speaking, listening, and reading skills.

English Standardized Test Skills

This cluster is designed to help international students prepare to take the TOEFL. Instruction will be focused around the iBT version; however, most of the skills taught are applicable to other versions as well.
