Welcome. This app is made to help build your arithmetic and mental math skills. It is designed specifically to help with integer arithmetic. (In case you don’t remember the vocabulary word, “integers” are counting numbers in both their positive and negative forms). We are also planning apps - based on the feedback and interest in this one - that help with calculating percentages and consumer math, fractions, and estimation.

The following are some things you should know before you start to use this app. However, you can probably figure out most of them just by using this app. In fact, we recommend first looking at a few of the other sheets now to get a sense of it. One general comment is that this version is a demo one that anyone can edit. To get your own personal copy email us at ari.m4m@gmail.com

Google Sheets
12
1. This app was made using Google Sheets as the base platform. We think it works well on it, but Google Sheets is designed for business and scientific computing, not EdTech. Therefore, there are a few quirks described below.
13
14
Only Edit Whitespace
15
2. You should only ever type, click, or edit parts of each sheet that are not colored or shaded at all. If you do make a change by accident, press Ctrl+Z right away or the undo icon. Otherwise, you might cause a change in the functionality of the program. Some cells are “locked” to help prevent this, but not all situations can be prevented. The good news is that even if you make a change by accident, it only affects your current version. You can always get another one from us.

Settings sheet

3. All of the settings (how many problems in the set, the range of values, etc.) are controlled in the Settings sheet/tab (listed at the bottom of the screen). More details are given there.

20
How randomization works
21
4. The problems in this app are generated using random numbers but they come from a prerecorded list of random numbers, not a real time program. This results generally in pretty randomized problems but you may see repeat problems. The way it works is that each problem set is determined by a unique 8-digit Form ID, a number you choose each time. This number determines how the app jumps around the list of random numbers to mix up the problems. Also, the range you choose for numbers being added/multiplied/etc. significantly affects the different questions in the problem set. This allows for more than 100 million different problem sets while keeping the platform simple.

Problem Set Start and Finish
24
5. On each sheet of problems (Addition, Multiplication, Subtraction, Division) the math problems appear when you click the Start checkbox. After you click the Finish checkbox, the correct answers appear in the blue column next to your inputs and your answers get graded. After each problem set you need to delete your previous answers yourself before you start the next one.
25
26
Count-up Timer Feature
27
6. We included a timer feature, but it only works and gets updated when you make a change to a spreadsheet cell or click a checkbox. To start it, you want to have the most current system time code appear on the upper right part of your problem set sheet. (You can just type something in an editable cell, press Enter, and then go back and delete it). Then you need to copy the code and once you do, the timer starts.
28
29
Logging your work
30
7. There is a log sheet where you can keep track of former problem sets and your grades. Record whatever information you want in the log sheet.
