2/8/2021 10:16:07BILD 3Jess GambelYesThe course includes one synchronous class per week (during the scheduled lecture time on Wednesdays) during which the instructor will review material with students and answer questions. However, this session will be recorded and made available on Canvas for students who cannot attend. Discussion sections with IAs will be synchronous but students are free to attend any section and do not have to only attend that section for which they are registered. Finally, students will be assessed through bi-weekly synchronous quizzes (instead of larger tests) that occur during the scheduled lecture time on Fridays, and the final quiz during the time slot scheduled for the course during finals week. For students in different time zones, those with work conflicts or childcare conflicts, etc., we will schedule an alternate time on Fridays for them to take quizzes.

2/8/2021 10:17:35BILD 3Carolyn KurleYesI will do as I did in spring 2020 where I held an open office hour on Zoom during class time. I will also hold a weekly Zoom office hour at a different time. My IAs will have set times for Discussion sections (but anyone can attend any of them and attendance is not required). My lectures for the week will be released as recorded lectures at the start of each week. Exams will be open for a 24 hour period with an 80 minute window for completion. All Zoom sessions will be recorded and available for viewing at any time. Students can attend any section at any time, but the sections will be held at specific times according to the registrar schedule. Attendance is not required.

2/8/2021 10:29:17BIPN 145Ashley JuavinettYesMonday lecture (11-11:50 am) is a synchronous discussion period during which you’ll be expected to participate in a discussion or collaborative activity. However, there are always options for students to make-up the activities if needed. Wednesday and Friday lectures are pre-recorded and can be watched on your own time.

Lab sessions (WF, 12:30-3 pm) are synchronous. Attendance is not mandatory, but your lab group will use this time to work together on an activity. If you cannot make one or more of these sessions, you can find an alternative time to meet with your lab group.

2/8/2021 10:31:18BILD 2Jiyoung ParkYes• Discussion sections
Discussion sections will be synchronous and attendance/participation will be required. We have discussion sections at various times, including late afternoon (B02 at 5pm PT; B03 at 6pm PT). Please choose one that best suits your schedule. If you are not able to attend discussion sections, because you are in different time zones or you have other emergencies that you cannot control, accommodations can be made.

• Exams (between 3 pm and 4:10 pm Pacific Time)
Exams must be taken on Canvas within the 70-min period between 3 pm and 4:10 pm Pacific Time on the date specified in the syllabus. If you are not able to take exams within this time period, because you are in different time zones or you have other emergencies that you cannot control, we may be able to accommodate your exam schedule.

• Class meetings (M/W/F 3:00-3:50pm, Pacific Time)
Course material will be provided as (1) pre-recorded lectures in Canvas and (2) live class meetings for problem solving and Q&A on class times (M/W/F 3:00-3:50pm, Pacific Time). Attendance is NOT required for these class meetings. Live class meetings will also be recorded and posted in Canvas for those who cannot attend on time.

2/8/2021 10:40:10BIEB 146Katherine PetrieYesLectures: will be held live on zoom at their scheduled time Mondays and Wednesdays, from 5-6:20. However, attendance is not required, and lectures will be recorded.

Discussion sections: will be held live on zoom at the times indicated in the schedule of classes. Attendance is not required, but IAs will go over quizzes and answer questions - they are your resource to improve your learning in this class. Unless you have special circumstances (i.e. covid related scheduling issues, like living in a different timezone), we ask that you only attend the section you are enrolled in.

Quizzes and exams: will be made available online for a window of time (e.g. 24 hours for quizzes, 48 hours for exams). They are timed: once a quiz or exam is opened, students will have limited amount of time (e.g. 1-several hours, depending on whether its a quiz or exam).

We strive to be flexible and accommodating. Please contact Dr. Petrie (kpetrie@ucsd.edu) with any questions or concerns.

2/8/2021 10:42:18BIPN 140Melinda OwensNoI give out a survey before class to determine to what extent students are able to attend synchronously. However, in the past, lectures have been prerecorded, and while sections are synchronous, students may attend any section as their schedule permits, and there is also an alternate section assignment that students may complete in lieu of section attendance.

2/8/2021 10:51:47BGGN 215Katherine PetrieYesLab: sessions will be held live on zoom during the scheduled course time, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-4:50 PM. Sessions will start with a brief lecture going over background material for the day's lab (this part will be recorded). Then, students will be placed in zoom breakout groups so they can work through the day's lab activity together with their peers (this part will not be recorded). Attendance is encouraged, but not required. There will be alternative, live, office-hours style sessions throughout the week, and the instructor and IA are also reachable via email and/or discussion boards on canvas.

Exams: there are no exams in the course; learning will be evaluated with weekly assignments and a final project.

2/8/2021 10:56:52BILD 60Scott RifkinYesClass meetings will be held regularly on Tuesday and Thursday. Some of these will involve in-class activities and discussion and some lecture. However, since some students will be unable to attend the synchronous session: (1) all classes will be recorded for students to watch later; (2) any in-class activities/assignments will be fully available to students asynchronously along with the ability to engage in asynchronous discussions about them; (3) a major part of discussion in the class will happen asynchronously through the platform Perusall. 2/8/2021 11:01:24BICD 100SmithYesLecture sessions will be synchronous. All students will participate in all lecture sessions (Mon, Wed, and Fri 1:00-1:50pm). Students enrolled in sections F01-05 will have the opportunity to attend class in person on Mondays. Students enrolled in sections G01-05 will have the opportunity to attend class in person on Wednesdays. Students enrolled in sections H01-05 will have the opportunity to attend class in person on Fridays. However, in-person attendance at MWF lecture sessions will not be required and recordings of these sessions will be made available for asynchronous viewing. In-person classes will be held either in an outdoor tent, or indoors if a public health and university guidelines permit (TBD). All discussion sections will be synchronous and points will be earned for participation; students can only earn points for participating synchronously in the discussion section they are enrolled in. Opportunities for in-person participation in discussion sections may be available, but in-person attendance at discussion sections will not be required (points can be earned for remote participation). Discussion sections will not be recorded for later viewing. All exams will be held synchronously, and in person if public health and university guidelines permit. The final exam will be held at the time set by the Registrar. Two midterms will be held on the evenings of Tues. Apr. 27 and Tues. May 18 (time TBD). Exceptions to regularly scheduled timing for exams will only be made for students with accommodations arranged through OSD, or who have unforeseen personal/medical emergencies. Thus, students must be available to come to campus at least for the exams; this class is not suitable for students who cannot do this.

However, for students that do not attend synchronously, there will an option for them to complete the assignment on their own time and upload asynchronously for credit.
Midterms and the final exam will be synchronous. Midterms may occur during lecture time. Students that individually contact the instructor prior to the exam with a need for taking the exam at a different time will be accommodated. Acceptable reasons include time zone issues, illness, family or work obligations.
This course will not accommodate students that register for different courses that overlap in lecture, discussion, or exam time.

2/8/2021 12:13:32BIBC 194Enfu HuiYesWe will have weekly seminar-style presentations via zoom. 3-5 students will form a team, which will be responsible for co-presenting one primary research paper to their classmates in a 60 minutes’ seminar, including approximately 45 minutes for the presentation and 15 minutes for questions and discussions. The team members should collaborate to synthesize a cohesive presentation, and each student should present some portion of the presentation. EACH presenter must be able to clearly explain ANY part of the assigned paper.

Students in the audience will take an in-class quiz, usually one or two multiple-choice questions about the paper presented, through zoom polling.
Students submit an anonymous peer review form after class to evaluate their peer presenters.

A key component of this course is 1:1 help sessions between a student and an instructor that happen in Zoom rooms during lab times. Because the course is an active and participation-oriented laboratory class, students are highly encouraged to take it synchronously. A graduate instructional assistant will hold synchronous office hours once a week at a predetermined time. Help over email is possible, but is necessarily slower.

2/8/2021 14:03:10BILD 3Shannon ButlerYesDiscussions are synchronous and required, unless you have an emergency or extenuating circumstance (such as a time zone, childcare, emergency, etc;). Please see web reg for specific dates and times and do your best to pick a time that works for you and your life.
NOTE: we do have evening discussion sections available for students, which are in the morning if you happen to be in a time zone such as Hong Kong, or similar. If this applies to you, enroll/attend one of the evening (San Diego time) sections. Select a section that is at a time that works for you and your time zone. If you unexpectedly move, we can assign you to a new section time that works for you, on a recurring basis (i.e. you need to attend a single section consistently).
I hold my office hours during the scheduled lecture time. If you choose to schedule something non-essential (like another course) over the lecture time, we will not accommodate you to meet at other times (unless you have a circumstance listed above, we will). It is in your best interest to be available during the scheduled lecture time. IAs have office hours at other various times.
Exams will be given during the scheduled lecture time, with a wide window surrounding this (+/-2 hours around the lecture time). If you are in a very different time zone, or have an extenuating circumstance (childcare, emergency, etc;), we will work with you to take the exam at a different time. If you choose to schedule something non-essential (like another course) over the lecture/Exam time, we will not accommodate you (unless you have a circumstance listed above, we will). It is in your best interest to be available during the scheduled lecture for exams, and the time of the Final Exam.

2/8/2021 22:32:24BIEB 154Sarah StockwellYesEach week’s classes and discussion sections will take place synchronously as scheduled in the published Schedule of Classes.

This is a relatively small class and is primarily discussion-based, so students are expected to attend the synchronous classes. If you are in a time zone where the meeting times are very inconvenient, or have child care conflicts, we can discuss how to accomodate you working asynchronously or in a modified way. If you miss a specific class, you will be able to watch a recording of the class session and make up the points associated with that class if you arrange it with me (Dr. Stockwell). However, it is much easier for you to participate synchronously so you should plan to attend this class synchronously in general. You would need special permission from me to work asynchronously.

Accommodations will not be made for students who want to enroll in courses that conflict with the scheduled course time.

The IA and I will hold office hours via Zoom. These will be synchronous; days/times TBA. If you cannot make those times, we can arrange to meet with you at a different time.

YesExams are timed and are given synchronously (midterm exam during the class time and final exam on the assigned time). A 24h period for exam completion is available upon request for students with a valid reason (different time zones, health problems, etc) and requires instructor's approval.

Up to 5 extra points (towards final grade) will be given for the "Science News" participation. This is a group presentation (group of 5 students) available by the end of designated lectures and/or discussion sections. Students are randomly assigned in a group. The work (collecting research data, editing, proofreading, presentation, etc.) will be divided through collaboration among the group members. This class features lectures on topics within regeneration and stem cell biology followed by discussion of primary papers within each topic. Lectures will be recorded to view asynchronously. For the paper discussions, it is highly preferred that everyone participate synchronously, since your peers need you to be present to have eight sizeable groups each week for discussion, and since active participation in this class may be necessary for your learning. However, because we cannot require synchronous attendance without an alternative, we will give you 3 points for being present for each class period starting in Week 2. If you are unable to attend class in real time but would like to earn those points another way, you can submit a ~200 word summary with information specific to the content of recorded material for each session you missed.
Our sections are not required and are present for our IA to field questions and help any confusion with lectures, homework quizzes, or presented papers.
