Longer than a monthdepends entirely on the student. I start with core words as quickly as possibleit would be helpful to have your target population stated clearly at the top of the form. Is this for children or adults? what level of communicator (emerging, context dependent, proficient)?

2/28/2018 15:43:03Go, stop, “I-want” (1 icon), help, moreYes, no, hi, bye, turn, don’t, not, turn, break, same, differentPersonal pronouns, it, fast, slow, big, little or small, what, who, where,2-3 words at a timeWord(s) for two weeksIf needed, choice-making with highly preferred fringe words to introduce communication & address frustration or related behaviorsAll of this varies significantly based on the child. For some students I spend a month on one core word, while others can go through 2-3 per week. Some students benefit from associated words being introduced together (like stop/go) and others do better with them being introduced separately. It also depends on the child’s cognitive, behavioral, and social profile and previous AAC experiences.

Used to start with PECS only. Now, we do PECS and core at the same time. Working on gaining a rich, functional vocabulary. It was hard to pick the order! All of those words are on our core board, we are using 48 core words on the board now. We specifically teach 2-3 words at a time, but all are available.

Thank you for the difference you are making for our students. Together we all do better!

I’m really trying to focus on supporting the teacher and paraprofessionals on how they can implement core words throughout there day with different activities. There is a shift that needs to happen. The SLP needs to support the teacher and aides.
