Unfortunately, she did not tell anyone that she had been hit. She continued to play throughout the remainder of practice. The following day, she left school (without seeing the school nurse or telling any coaches of her head injury) and went to her doctor. On Saturday 4/2, she finally told me about her injury. She had a contusion on her head and was going for an MRI that day. I spoke with her again the following day... she had gone to the ER b/c her symptoms (migraines, facial swelling) had not gone away. She is not cleared to play lacrosse until further notice. I have also spoken with her mother. I re-iterated that players need to let their coaches know whenever they are injured, especially to the head!contact with ball3-5 days missedNicole Beauford

Queensbury, played at home on a turf field, this student athlete (Offensive Midfield Player) was running with the ball in her stick and a collision occurred with an opposing players stick and body. My player did not complain of pain and bruising was not noticed until the following day 4/12/11 at which time she was evaluated by our Athletic Trainer and deemed fit to continue to practice and play.
As a side note, this same player was hit several times on the top of her hear by a stick within this same game and only one penalty was assessed for said actions. No concussion symptoms were noted or seen by the Athletic Trainer on duty during this same game.

4/25/2011 11:28:03Section 2VarsityGame SituationOther (please describe in Comments if not specified above)Sideline first aidNOCage goggleNOOvercastGoodDisposition of Injury (other) - Our player was defending an offensive player from the other team. Throughout the course of the play, contact was made on the top of our players head with an opposing players stick. The opposing player either passed the ball or shot towards the goal and her stick hit the top of our players head, requiring her to come out of the game for an evaluation. She was not bleeding but was in pain just at the site of contact. Trainer evaluated her for concussion but there were no signs or symptoms of one. Player was kept out for precautionary purposes only and was given information should symptoms present themselves later. Mother of the player was present for entire evaluation and information was given to her should she need to seek medical attention later. At the conclusion of the game, player was directed to contact coach with updates. By Saturday (the next day) player and mom indicated all was well and no further medical evaluations would be necessary.contact with stickno time missedDenise Benton (coach) and Patty Gunderlach (trainer)

4/28/2011 15:44:30Section 2JVPractice SituationConcussionSideline first aidNOCage goggleNOSunnyGoodDuring a practice, my player ran towards the passer with her stick up and the ball missed her stick (she moved her stick sideways, causing the ball to careen off the top of her head. She did not cry, did not act as if she was in pain but out of precaution I took her out of play and assessed her to the best of my ability, giving her instructions if she should feel symptomatic later. She repeatedly said, "I'm OK, I'm OK" and never cried and never complained. She remained at practice for the last 30 minutes of the practice and watched from the bench.
On 4/29/2011 I received a message that she did not go to school but went to the doctor (due to headache and pain) and she was diagnosed with a slight concussion by her primary care doctor, and she was being taken out of school and all activities for 2 days. However, our district has a process of athletic trainer (4 day testing), and school physician, and primary care doctor release/ approval before returning to play. All-in-all,she will miss at LEAST 6-7 days of games and practices combined.
Additionally, no trainer was present at the time of practice.

She did not tell me about the incident until later. The following Saturday said she felt a little "off" and told me about the incident during the previous game.

I then sent her to the trainer, who sent her to the doctor. She was cleared to play by the doctor on that following Monday.

I filled this out as a general overview of the 3 injuries. One concussion occurred in practice. The athlete got hit in the head with a lax ball. The other two occurred in games. One got hit in the forehead with a stick. The other hit another player followed by the ground. That athlete ended up with a concussion and a neck strain and had to be transported by ambulance to the the ER. That athlete has been out of school ever since. She currently is wearing a neck brace.contact with stick, contact with ball, contact with groundmore than 7 days missedNicole Callaghan, ATC
